- Laurie Berkner will be putting on a show on Sunday-in Staten Island
Charles has compiled the best music events for us this weekend. It seems Staten Island has the lion’s share of kids music events this weekend- but not to be outdone- Brooklyn has the Fuzzy Lemons at the Knitting Factory.
Friday August 13th
11:00 am: Summer Dance at the NMAI
Come join Cetiliztli Nauhcampa as part of the dance series at the museum. If you haven’t visited the museum yet, it’s a great time to do so.
Details:National Museum of the American Indian Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, 1 Bowling Green (between State and Whitehall Sts) Cost: Free Also at 1:00 pm
6:30 pm: Sunset Jam on the Hudson
I’ve been curious about how the kids would feel about a drum circle. A drum circle at sunset seems an ideal way to introduce them. There will be master drummers to teach basic patterns or just let the kids tire themselves out so they sleep late on Saturday.
Details: Robert F. Wagner Park Battery Pl (Battery Pl) Cost: Free
Saturday August 14th
12:00 pm: 5th Annual Staten Island International Dance Festival
A range of styles will be on display in Tappen Park as dance troupes from New York and beyond, demonstrate their own ways to move. Hip hop, African, tango, ballet and modern will be on display and the featured performer will be Latino Folklorico de Staten Island.
Details: Tappen Park Bay St (between Canal and Water Sts) Staten Island Cost: Free
2:30 pm: Junior Jam
Sing and sign along to aptly-named tunes like Just Read with Jeff and Elayne, who are sure to get little ones to Wake Up and Sound Like an Animal with songs from their latest album.
Details: Midland Beach Park Father Capodanno Blvd (at Naughton Ave) Staten Island Cost: Free
Sunday August 15th
11:00 am: The Fuzzy Lemons
The Fuzzy Lemons play silly, goofy, rock for families that get everyone involved. Another in the wonderful series of children’s music at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn.
Details: Knitting Factory Brooklyn 361 Metropolitan Avenue Cost: $10/Child (parents/caregivers free w/child)
1:00 pm: Laurie Berkner Band Birthday Party Concert
We are a Laurie Berkner family. We wore out her CDs, and DVD, and took the kids to see her live show which doesn’t disappoint. Laurie (we’re on a first name basis) is encouraging everyone to bring along a pair of new or gently-used children’s shoes for a child in need for an organization called Soles4Souls.
Details: St. George Theatre 35 Hyatt Street Staten Island, NY Cost: $25-$35; Babies (under age 1) seated in adult’s lap, free
7:00 pm: Acoustic Sunday with Los Soneros de Oriente – Riverside Park South
Enjoy the sunset over the Hudson with the Cuban groove of Los Soneros de Oriente.
Details: Pier I at 70th Street and the Hudson River Ages: All Ages
(Many thanks to Go City Kids.com, TONY Kids, NY Metro Parents, and Mommy Poppins for listing info!)
