This is the second to last weekend to catch PS 1's Warm Up- so don't miss out!
Friday August 27th
3:30 pm: Get Your Rhythm Going!
Kids learn how the children of Hangzhou create music with the popular hand drum toy, and create an instrument to take home.
Details: Brooklyn Children’s Museum 145 Brooklyn Avenue Cost: Free with paid admission
6:30 pm: Sunset Jam on the Hudson
I’ve been curious about how the kids would feel about a drum circle. A drum circle at sunset seems an ideal way to introduce them. There will be master drummers to teach basic patterns or just let the kids tire themselves out so they sleep late on Saturday.
Details: Robert F. Wagner Park Battery Place Cost: Free
6:30 pm: Target Passport Friday 2010: Mexico – Unisphere
Come celebrate Mexican culture with traditional dance, music by Cumbiagra, then a screening of the film “Those Who Remain/Los Que Se Quedan” after sunset.
Details: Flushing Meadows Corona Park Queens Cost: Free
Saturday August 28th
12:00 pm: Wiseacre Farm
In this long-running children’s musical, tots in the audience get to climb onstage to help save Cliffie the Pig’s birthday cake from a fox.
Details: 13th Street Repertory Company 50 W 13th St (between Fifth and Sixth Aves) Cost: $10
12:00 pm: Hacia Afuera Outdoor Art and Music Festival
A weekend-long festival presented by Arts for Change, Hacia Afuera (“to go outside”) celebrates art, music, food, and performance. There will be live music by Los Mas Valientes, La Bruja, The Stepkids, and Genesis Be, a drumming workshop, delicious food, and arts and crafts.
Details: Hacia Afuera Festival 105th Street & Lexington Avenue New York, NY Cost: Free Also on Sunday.
1:00 pm: Carol Sudhalter’s Astoria Jazz Band
Part of the Hot Jazz/Cool Garden Concert Series. Held every summer in the museum’s Japanese-style garden, these free concerts feature up-and-coming bands that play and promote the music of Louis Armstrong.
Details: Louis Armstrong House Museum 34-56 107th Street Corona , NY Cost: Free
2:00 pm: Warm Up
P.S. 1 has a very special vibe to it whenever I’ve gone. Everyone just seems to go to have a good time and although it’s not a kid specific event, everyone seems to love seeing kids playing in the fountains or jumping on the dance floor.
Details: MoMA PS1 22-25 Jackson Ave (at 46th Ave) Long Island City, Queens Cost: $15 (includes admission to the museum), cash only; members free
Sunday August 29th
10:30 am: Children’s Festival
Heal the World for Children, the charitable organization founded by Michael Jackson, hosts a party in honor of the late pop star’s birthday. In addition to moonwalking to classic MJ songs, kids can have their faces painted, make crafts, enter contests and jump around in a bouncy castle. RSVP to [email protected] required.
Details: Fort Greene Park Washington Park (between DeKalb and Myrtle Aves) Cost: Free
11:00 am: Captain Marbles and His Acting Squad
A spirited mounting of a kooky kids musical (cowritten by Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy!) that employs all of the usual tot-pleasing gimmicks, including bubbles and lots of audience participation.
Details: Theatres at 45 Bleecker 45 Bleecker St (between Bowery and Lafayette St) Cost: $20
