West Indian American Day Parade in Crown Heights

Lucky you if you have somewhere fabulous to go this weekend- we don’t- argh. We’ll be in Brooklyn (sigh), so if you’re like us and will be searching for events to go to- check out our list compiled below from the best listings for the weekend.

Mommy Poppins has a list of “Things to Do in New York City for Kids and Families”:  My picks from her  list are:

Habana Outpost’s Back to School Bash—Fort Greene
Stop by Brooklyn’s eco-eatery for a day of fun to end summer 2010.  Arts and crafts, stilt walkers, clowns, dancing, face painting and lots more will surely entertain the troops.  Plus there will be free notebooks and pencils for school while supplies last. FREE

West Indian American Day Jr. Carnival – Crown Heights
All the excitement of Carnival for the smaller set – catch the festive parade of kids donning Carnival garb as they travel from Kingston Ave and St. Johns Place to Franklin Ave South, to President Street, into Brooklyn Museum Grounds at Washington Avenue for a competition. FREE

Time Out New York Kids has a list of “Best Free and Fun Things to do this Weekend”. My picks from their list are:

FREE New York City Unicycle Festival
Sat Sept 4 noon–5pm. Governors Island (212-253-2727, nycunifest.com). 1 to South Ferry, then take the Governors Island Ferry from the Battery Maritime Building, Slip 7.
NYC’s first unicycle festival rolls into town this weekend (on one wheel, no less). While the fest spans three days with tours and rides around the city, you’ll find the best sights for kids at the Governors Island stop. Check out demos, races and even unicycle basketball games courtesy of the world-famous King Charles Troupe. All ages.

The Richmond County Fair in Staten Island hosts a carnival complete with throwback games like potato-sack races and pie-eating contests ($15, kids under 32 inches admitted for free). Also on Sunday and Monday!

Parents Connect has their usual comprehensive roundup of weekend events and these are my picks from their list:

Doug and Mike Starn on the Roof at the Metropolitan Museum 1000 Fifth Avenue
Twin brothers Mike and Doug Starn (born in New Jersey in 1961) present their new work, a monumental bamboo structure, ultimately measuring 100 feet long, 50 feet wide, and 50 feet high, that takes the form of a cresting wave. Visitors witness the continuing creation and evolving incarnations of Big Bambu as it is constructed throughout the spring, summer, and fall by the artists and a team of rock climbers.

NYICFF screens a kid-friendly mix of animated and musical shorts from around the world. The lineup features audience favorites from the past two festivals – including Lost and FoundHedgehugAston’s StonesMermaidBooo, andElectric Car.

Toddler Play at Teardrop Park and Robert Wagner Park : Toddlers, parents, and caregivers are invited to participate in interactive play on the grassy lawn. Toys, books, play equipment, and recycled materials are provided.

Last, but not least, check out our Music Listings for this weekend that our Listings Editor Charles has put together.
