Facilitated Moms Groups

A few weeks ago I did a post on where to meet other moms: the list included everything from childbirth classes, mom groups, classes for newborns, and breastfeeding circles. What I didn’t include were facilitated moms groups. How are these different than regular moms’ groups?

Facilitated moms groups may have a parent educator, psychologist, psychiatrist or pediatrician running the moms’ group. The aim is to not only meet other moms and babies, but to have weekly directed topics with guidance from a professional.

Here are some that are recommended:

This group is designed to provide support for women who struggle with loss of their mothers and its impact on their own mother-child experience. During the six weeks each session will focus on a particular topic related to mother loss. Enough space will also be given for members to raise any challenges they are facing and for the group to offer their support and explore coping strategies. The main goal of this group is making each group member feel heard, respected and empowered by others as well as enable each person to acknowledge her own capacity to meet life where it is at.
About the facilitator: Irena Kenny is a licensed and board certified art psychotherapist and a local Mom. She works with children, adolescents and adults utilizing the tools of classical verbal therapy as well as art and play therapy. She has a special interested in issues of parenting and in the impact of motherhood on one’s identity.
The cost of the cycle is $150.

  1. I run a facilitated support group for mothers called the Good-Enough Mother Support Group.
I am an LCSW with a private practice in Park Slope. I use a body centered, Gestalt approach to the therapeutic process.
The mother’s group provides a place for women to explore the range of emotions that they experience as mothers so that they can feel more comfortable in their choices as parents and find some relief from the judgement they feel from themselves, their families and society. In the group, members will explore their identities as women and mothers, beliefs about parenting, and learn about their styles of communication through group discussion and exercises.

The group meets on Monday evenings from 8-9:30 in my office in Park Slope and runs for 8 weeks. It is $50 per session.

Please contact me at 917-664-4002 if you are interested. I am currently conducting pre-group interviews and plan to start the group at the end of September or beginning of October.
