A washer and a botanical stroller at the family friendly Ragamuffin Parade
What a wonderful weekend of choices we have in front of us. The sweet and fun Ragamuffin Parade in Bay Ridge is a special treat this weekend- a fun precursor to Halloween. There are some pumpkin fests, Dr. Nebula’s Science Show, a serious kids’ music jam on Saturday for a Brooklyn school, the Hoboken Arts and Music Festival where there will be more than 200 artists, local vendors and kids performances, including concerts by Erin Lee and the Up Past Bedtime Band and a magic show from Oakie Dokie Clown.
Don’t forget these earlier writeups we did for events too:
Pick your own pumpkins, apples, veggies….and hop a hayride!

Below are my event picks for the weekend, culled from emails I get as well as from a few wonderful blogs.
My picks:
Saturday, Oct. 2nd and Sunday, Oct. 3rd: Bay Ridge: The Ragamuffin Parade and 3rd Ave Festival
This is a huge weekend for Bay Ridge residents. They have their regaled and adored children’s Ragamuffin Parade on Saturday and the 3rd Ave Green Festival on Sunday.
The Ragamuffin Parade is an annual tradition where kids dress in costume and march down Third Avenue to cheering adults. The parade was started to make Halloween safe for little ones (and I also suspect for those who just can’t wait for Halloween!). It has been going for 41 years! It is a super hip family event where kids (expect about 1600) parade down the street in their ragamuffin best: pjs, superhero costumes, raggedy clothes or costumes. Bicycles, tricycles and strollers are allowed on the route, so many clans incorporate these modes of transport into their costume themes and decorate them to the nines. Parents have been sewing, constructing and buying costumes in preparation for this family event. This Saturday, either join the Ragamuffin Parade or observe it from the side. The parade begins at 1 pm from 76th Street and 3rd Ave. The parade will continue along 3rd Ave, ending at 92nd Street. The costume contest awards will be given out at the end of the parade route. Ragamuffin is next Saturday October 2nd and the 3rd Avenue feast is Sunday the 3rd.
Then the next day, Bay Ridgers will be out along 3rd Ave again. The 37th Annual 3rd Avenue Festival will focus on being “green.” Artists will be showing their work and businesses will be showing off their “greenness” on 3rd Ave between 69th Street and 95th Street. In addition, check out the music stages, food and dance.
Details: Ragamuffin Parade: Saturday, Oct. 2: 1 pm (rain or shine). Registration to be in the parade will begin at 11 am- 12:15 at Holy Angels Academy at 74th St. between 3rd and 4th Aves. Judging will begin in the registration area at 11:30 AM and end at 12:15 PM. The parade will assemble at 12:30 PM at 76th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues.
3rd Ave Festival: Saturday, Oct. 3rd: 10 am- 6 pm: 3rd Ave between 69th Street and 95th Street.
