Is it possible that a photographer can get happy, smiling portraits all the time? Probably not, but Emily DeWan isn’t far off. She seems to get that winning smile (or giggle or guffaw) about 99% of the time. Check out her family portrait above: I don’t know where this ear-to-ear-grinning family is, but I want to be there, in that moment, belly laughing with all four of them as they slide off the rock or lay on top of each other on the grass. Is this family for real?
As I work my way through Emily’s portfolio, this family doesn’t seem so different from her other portraits. Are all these people on giggle juice or is it that Emily brings out the fun in them? It’s the latter: she even gets a baby on the changing table to flash a charming smile. Emily is a really good photographer- you can see it more completely on her blog, where she shoots on the fly- and nails table shots and portraits with equal aplomb.
It figures that Emily’s passions are swing dancing and photography. Like swing dancing, she circles, swoops through and catches her subjects as they move through life. She dances around her subjects wherever they happen to be – at home, in the park, or sleeping on a daddy.
It’s time for your holiday portrait….you know, the one you’ve been putting off?
Emily is doing a special: her usual session fee is $150, but if you book before 2010 and mention “A Child Grows”, you can book her for $75. The session is for any location within the 5 boroughs (your house, a favorite park, or anywhere else you’d like). She shoots for 1 – 2 hours with no limit on the numbers of images.
