Finally- a multivitamin with fish oil- all in one

I’ve been writing on this blog about multivitamins and fish oil supplements throughout my own quest to find the best ingredients and taste out there. Every morning both my children get an Omega 3 gummy and a multivitamin. They both dread the fish oil and I don’t blame them. Their breath betrays how bad it actually tastes. It’s a dreaded struggle every morning, so when I heard about SmartyPants gummies, an all-in-one vitamin that has BOTH the Omega-3s and 100% of recommended daily vitamins, I knew I had to give them a try.

What they are like (texture, taste):
I’ve rejected many vitamins based on their contents of either high fructose corn syrup, not enough daily percentages, fishy taste or unchewable consistency.  We have a shelf of deserted bottles and half-consumed vitamins. SmartyPants are chewable gummies that are multi-colored and multi-flavored. They have the tantalizing shape of gumdrops- which isn’t too far from the way they taste.  Though they have only 5 grams of organic cane sugar, you might mistake them for gummy treats all the same.  On a scale of 1 to 10 for taste, they get a 10. A 10 means that I want to eat more than the prescribed dosage just because they taste so good. And for ingredients?

How about the ingredients?
I wanted to carefully examine how SmartyPants compared to my Nordic Omega 3 Gummies and Nordic Berries Multivitamin- both leaders in their categories.

I compared SmartyPants to the combination of Nordic’s Berries Multivitamin AND their Omega 3 Gummies since you need both the Nordic supplements to equal the SmartyPants.

So, let’s get to the nitty gritty. Here’s my table comparison. I have bolded the winner in each row.

Nordic Om3 Nordic Berries Multi SmartyPants
Cost 60 for $21.95 120 for $21.95 120 for $21.95
Sugar – amount 3 gr 6 gr 5 gr
Calories 40 35 35
Sodium 10 mg 15 gr 13 mg
Fish Oil 273 mg none 303 mg
Carbohydrates 4 gr 9 gr 7 gr
Om-3 Fatty Acids 82 gr 90 mg
Vit A
2500 iu 1107 iu
Zinc
8 mg 4.3 mg

Who wins?
First, you might wonder where all the other numbers are. In effect, the other amounts of Vitamin A, C, D, E, etc were close enough or the same that they didn’t warrant mussing up the chart. What I did want to compare were the differences.  You can see that SmartyPants wins out in every category except in Vitamin A and Zinc.  Why?

Here’s the answer from SmartyPants when I asked them:

“The reason that there is less Vitamin A is that it is a fat soluble vitamin so it’s one in particular you want to watch and with a vitamin that tastes like a candy we don’t want to overload on anything your body doesn’t excrete the excess of naturally (like Vitamin B, C etc).  Zinc interacts with fish oil in a way that limits the amount we can include and after consulting lots of experts, we concluded that it was better to have more omegas and less zinc then vice versa.”

Where they win and win big in my book:
SmartyPants has HALF the amount of sugar, calories, carbohydrates and sodium and  MORE Fish Oil and Om-3 Fatty Acids than the combination of both the Nordics. That’s pretty darn good, I would say!

The price breakdown:
Let’s take a look at the cost. SmartyPants is HALF the price. You have to buy both Nordic Berries Multi and their Omega 3 Gummies to get the same results. Even better: for every bottle you buy, the company donates a year’s worth of vital nutrients for two children in need through Vitamin Angels.

I have finally found our family vitamin. No more dreaded dosages of fish oil or coma-inducing sugary vitamins, just natural ingredients in a fabulous tasting vitamin. I guess my writing about searching for the best vitamin and fish oil is officially done!

  1. Gail,
Studies show that effective dose of fish oil is 3000 mg a day as a minimum. Omega 3 fish oils are essential and you virtually can’t overdose yourself with them unless the sources are contaminated with heavy metals like mercury. You want to add fatty fishes to your diet at least twice a week. It’s very important to check what fishes were used to produce your supplements. It’s preferred that oils are from small fishes like sardines and anchovies, that are cold water small fishes with very short life span, meaning no contamination. Also, it’s important that company has a QC=oils get filtered and distilled and checked for mercury content, it should be none present. Another point: good fish oils have vit. E in them. Vit. E is very potent antioxidant and provides and antioxidant defense to you and the oil preventing it from oxidation and rinsing, double duty.
Eat lots of sardines and anchovies with bone in for your heart and joint health. Hope I helped to answer your question.

  2. Karen-one more comment from SmartyPants-you save about 15% if you buy a 3 pack and 35% if you buy a six pack. we also sell 7 & 14 single serving packs for lunch boxes, travelling and people who want to try them without investing in a full bottle (we all know what its like to have unused bottles sitting on the counter)…-Courtney

  3. We are the founders of SmartyPants-Just wanted to respond to Tracy’s comment about 3rd party testing. We are free of heavy metals etc. and are third party tested and verified (as our ALL vitamins that pass FDA Stability trials-it is a requirement that you meet Prop 65 requirements related to claims re: mercury etc) from Covance Labs through our manufacturing partner, Santa Cruz Nutritionals. Our product has the same profile as Nordic Berries by Nordic Naturals but with 1 less gram of sugar/serving and with omega 3′s for the same price. You would have to buy both the Omega product and the Nordic Berries (which, we agree, is a v. well made product) for twice the price to get the same nutrient density. We love the feedback and you can see more about our product at http://www.wearesmartypants.com/products.php

  4. Sounds like a good supplement. But I take a fish oil supplement with just Omega-3 at 1000mg.

  5. Wow! What an amazing and innovative new invention. I would love to hear the story of the amazing person or team that came up with this idea.

Here is a question for anyone who can answer it. If I already take fish oil, is it necessary to also to eat salmon? I have wondered about this question for some time.

Thanks for this great website. I have bookmarked it and shared it with friends.

  6. Would like to see a statement that these are third party tested for heavy metals, dioxins & PCBs. Their statement about their fish source means nothing without third party testing data to back it up. We use the Nordic Naturals Children’s DHA—every batch is tested. They are strawberry flavored and my daughter loves them.

  7. HI Kyra,

Haven’t tried those yet- but good to know they aren’t bad! LOVE TJ’s! We’ve been doing Nordic’s Fish Oil for forever and Willow has been rejecting it for the last few months- and I want her to get that Omega 3. So, I’m really happy we found these.

We have 6 SmartyPants vits left now (I have been sneaking them myself instead of my nightly sugar fix- you sound like me!) and so will have to do an order- which I actually noticed is cheaper if I order 3 bottles at at time.

  8. This is great! I always wondered why no one created an all-in-one. BTW, we use Trader Joe’s Gummy Omega’s (made with fish oil) and they taste pretty darn good as well. I often eat one with the kids. And they’re cheap of course since it’s Trader’s.
