If there is one thing kids love it is to move. Sometimes they love to move so much that it is difficult to keep up with them! A great way to exert their natural energy (and give you a break) is to enroll them in a fun and interactive tumbling class. Through tumbling kids learn back rolls, handstands, cartwheels and maybe even a full on headstand. Check out some of the latest offerings to get your energetic kid off and running.

If you have taken classes at any of them, please feel free to add your comments at the bottom of this post.

  1. I just wanted to say how much we loved having our 5-year-old twins’ birthday party at POWERPLAY. The kids loved it, saying it was the best birthday party ever, and many parents told us the same. The staff helping out in the gym room is fantastic, there were three or four of them to lead the kids through the different activities, which included a zip line, an inflatable bounce area, a trampoline, a ball pit, and more. There was staff to help with pizza and cake afterward, as well. Everything went so smoothly, and the kids had so much fun!!! I would definitely take classes there: besides the upstairs gym room, the downstairs area looks like a fantastic gymnastics space, large and well equipped. Two thumbs up!

  2. Its a $10 trial class and then drop-ins for $14 each or you can save money with a class card.

We offer an on-going mat class with props like a balance beam. The downside is that you aren’t getting ball pits and parallel bars, for example. The upside is you aren’t paying for them until your child needs them. Your little one or beginner gets good solid basics (eg. cartwheel, handstand, rolls) and then can graduate up to more advanced gymnastics, martial arts, dance, or…..

You can check us out at http://www.MidwoodMartialArts.com or call 718-258-KICK.

Thanks! Alison (mother of Zane, Dash, Dante & Colette)

  3. Wow Alison- $10 a class. That might make the trip out there worth it for me.

  4. Tracy- why oh why did you start to put that in my mind…..I tend towards germaphobe as it is- so now you’ve got my mind going!
Anyway, thanks for mentioning that Aviator should be on the list. Actually, Aviator is supposed to be sending me info on all their tumbling classes- including mommy and me.

  5. Karen,

My girls aren’t in any gymnastics classes—I’m kind of freaked out about germs that can be picked up off the mats (i.e. ringworm, MRSA, etc.). Just knew about the program since I live close to Aviator, so I thought I’d mention it. Sorry that I don’t have any firsthand experience to add.

  6. Midwood Martial Arts & Family Fitness Center continues to offer a gymnastics mat class on Tuesday afternoons for ages 2-12.
Our instructors are bi-lingual in Russian and English.
Make an appointment for a $10 trial class if you’ve never come before.
You can use the same class card for gymnastics or karate.

    Best,

  7. Tumble Monkeys at Everyday Athlete and Aviator Sports both look awesome — thanks for this list! I’ve also been meaning to look into classes for my, um, ACTIVE daughter and hadn’t gotten around to it. This is great!

  8. Thanks Tracey and Carmen
I have seen their gymnastics classes a few times (we take ice skating lessons there)- I don’t know how I forgot to include them.
Tracy- do you like the classes there- teachers?
It has always seemed intense when I see the classes in session (for the tweens)- so I don’t have a sense of the classes for younger kids.
    Would love your thoughts.

  9. Oh and for what it’s worth, I’ve heard great things about the gymnastics program at the Aviator Center. One of our students at Urban Martial Arts is taking a course there and loves it.

  10. Thanks so much for compiling this list! I’m actually looking for a place where my 2-year-old can take gymnastics, and have been a bit lazy about doing the research. This definitely makes my life much easier! :)
