From the moment I heard about and went to Families First, I have always admired it. It’s a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families that offer everything from classes for children ages 0-7, workshops for parents to a very popular preschool/parent-child program that has always been difficult to get into. Families First has a new Director at the helm and so I don’t know if the group is essentially the same or not, but I might head to their Spring Carnival to find out a bit more.

What I do know is that the 20 year-old organization is well respected and doesn’t charge much for the playspace, membership or classes. You can tell when you visit Families First that their isn’t a lot of money rolling in.. but that’s it’s a heartfelt and earnest institution.  So, it makes sense that they make this fundraiser- which is the principal fundraiser for the group- go off with a bang.

This Saturday, May 14th the Families First Brooklyn’s Annual Spring Carnival will take place on Baltic Street, in Cobble Hill. The day is best for families with children in preschool-to-kindergarten years.

What you can expect:

  • A big red real fire truck to climb onto and talk to the firefighters from Engine 110 in Red Hook
  • 23 baby animals in a petting zoo
  • A carousel with swings gently revolving around a toyland
  • strolling musicians
  • a special kids’ DJ with games and dancing
  • good foods and fruit drinks
  • balloons, balloons, balloons!

Details:
The event will be held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. ET at
Families First
250 Baltic Street, between Court and Clinton Streets
Cobble Hill
(F, G to Bergen Street) or by bus (B57 to Warren or Kane Street).  On the street parking is available.

  1. The Families First Spring Carnival happens rain or shine. So if tomorrow is wet, head inside to the auditorium at 250 Baltic Street for lots of good fun and food inside!
