Charles has compiled some great music events this weekend including our always favorite Gustafer Yellowgold and Moey. Other fun events include: Brooklyn Kids Rock Live, NYC Bhangra Family Dance Contest and Bang on a Can Marathon! Have a great weekend.
Friday June 17th
11:00 am: Weekly Sing-along with Lloyd Miller
Lloyd’s energy, humor, and wonderful music always entertains and educates children and adults at his weekly sing-along.

Saturday June 18th
10:30 am: How to Compose in Color and Sound
Get inspired by live music at this hands-on event. Little music fans can test out their composer skills and discover what it takes to create a successful sound. Kids who are feeling extra-creative can channel the sights and sounds of the Chelsea Art Museum to create a take-home art project.

12:00 pm: NYC KidsFest
Lots of music at this event up at Morningside Park including performances by Father Goose, Fuerza Peruana, and Folkfoot.

12:00 pm: Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos
Kids may feel the need to show off their hard-earned piano skills when they see one of the 88 pianos to be stationed in popular city spots in all five boroughs. Visit singforhope.org for a full list of locations.

2:00 pm: Gustafer Yellowgold
Gustafer Yellowgold creator Morgan Taylor narrates the story of the yellow creature from the sun through live, original songs, played to the accompaniment of Taylor’s hand-drawn videos.

2:00 pm: Brooklyn Kids Rock Live
Aspiring musicians learn how to produce original songs while also playing the greats, from The Who to The White Stripes. After rehearsing with their bands and hamming it up in photo shoots, youngsters live out their rock ‘n’ roll dreams tonight by performing in a real music venue.

2:30 pm: The Kool Jazzy Dads
Dads and their hip kittens bebop to live jazz music as kids decorate a tie for the jazzy papa in their life.

4:00 pm: Tia Fuller Quartet
Brooklyn’s Best Jumpin’ Jazz Fest ends with a performance by renowned saxaphonist, Tia Fuller.

Sunday June 19th
12:00 pm: Bang on a Can Marathon
You might wanna bring earplugs: The annual percussionfest gets pretty darn loud, with 12 hours of genre-bending music from more than 150 performers, including Philip Glass and the Sun Ra Arkestra, plus compositions by Danish composer Poul Ruders and experimental musician Toby Twining. Don’t be surprised if your kid asks for her first drum kit afterward.

12:00 pm: NYC Bhangra Family Dance Contest
Treat Papa to a special celebration with this festive dance competition, hosted by local Indian dance organization NYC Bhangra. Little ones, parents and even grandparents are invited to take to the stage and show off their Bollywood-worthy moves—or just watch from the sidelines.

1:00 pm: Moey’s Music Party Concert
Off-Broadway songwriter Melissa Levis (Moey) cranks out entertaining and educational tunes reminiscent of Schoolhouse Rock.

4:00 pm: Great Small Works Presents Banners and Cranks Festival of Cantastoria
This unique fest unites puppeteers, artists and musicians for an evening of kid-pleasing entertainment, including stories and songs.

5:00 pm: The Children’s Orchestra Society 42nd Annual Spring Concert
Come enjoy a night of musical entertainment and end-of-the-year festivities at the Queensborough Performing Arts Center. The spring concert will be showcasing all Children’s Orchestra Society’s orchestras, chorus, and concerto performances by select graduating seniors.
