Vishnu: Hinduism’s Blue-Skinned Savior
Through October 2
Organized by the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, this exciting exhibit features more than 170 objects, figures and legends of Vishnu, one of Hinduism’s three major deities. The exhibit includes paintings, sculptures, textiles, and ritual objects created in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh between the fourth and 20th centuries.

Featuring three sections, the first part features paintings of Vishnu in his primary form, with a focus on his body parts, consorts, and legends. This includes paintings of his primary consort, Lakshmi and a gold and silver painting that shows Lakshmi massaging Vishnu’s feet.

The second section focuses on the objects that showcase Vishnu when he transforms himself into humans such as Krishna and Rama or animals ranging from a fish to a lion.

The third section features objects that show how Vishnu has been worshipped over the centuries. This includes a six-inch-high, gold, jewel-encrusted miniature throne with a tiny parasol.

This involved a three-part activity where visitors went to the Museum’s website and rated images of works randomly generated from a pool of 167 Indian paintings. The result is the exhibition that features paintings that received the most controversial responses.
