Ever wonder what the best playgrounds and parks are in NYC? There are two new sites that make scouting them out easier for you. Hey, Tour de Brooklyn- what to join forces? We could use some more playground reviews!
NYC Park Hopper
If you are going to make the trek across the bridge to visit one, why not determine which ones are the best before you start out? With 207 parks in Manhattan, it can be tough to know which ones are worth the trek. Well, three ladies (one nanny and two girls) are on a mission to find them all and write about them on their informative and fun site, NYC Park Hopper. Started in July of 2011, NYC Park Hopper ranks and reviews the city’s parks such as whether they have slides, swings, sprinklers, etc. They give it that personal touch too by writing about their own experience there. The site also ranks parks for adults, noting if a park has shade or seats and what the proximity is to the bathroom and local stores. So far they have covered various locations in NYC like the Tar Family Playground (Central Park) and the Washington Square Park. I found a particularly intriguing playground on their site, that is now on my list to visit: the Wild West Playground (Central Park). See more on what they have to say about it below and be sure to follow their adventures and this fantastic park resource website.
Wild West Playground (Central Park)
Details: 93rd and Central Park West
Park Hopper ranked this Western-themed and wooden playground for what it could offer both kids and adults. For kids, they noted that this toddler park is filled with fun rides like tire swings, slides, pyramid steps (they said this is scary for babies), baby swings, a wooden sand pit, sprinklers, monkey bars, and picnic tables. For the adults they noted that the park has a lot of seats and shade but there were also a lot of blindspots that they stated, “caused a lot of headaches.”
The negative part of the park was that there were no trashcans and the closest bathroom was at a least a five-minute walk away. Overall, the girls did have a good experience at this park and though that the theme really helped incorporate new and imaginative games with the kids they were with. There is also a river through the park, which was another fun activity as they placed leaves in the beginning of the stream where someone else would catch it downstream.
The Tour de Brooklyn Playgrounds
The Tour de Brooklyn Playgrounds is a 2011 spring/summer blog by Brooklyn Mini Hands reviews a new Brooklyn playground each week, as well as post a corresponding weekly sign. Some of their favorites include: Underhill Playground in Prospect Heights and Pier 6 in Carroll Gardens. I would agree on both of those.
