30th Annual Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer at Queens County Farm Museum

If you are in the mood to shake your booty then hit one of the dance parties this weekend: the American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow or Little Club Heads Family Dance Party. Otherwise, there are some lower key opportunities to swing your bod at Great Jazz on the hill, Friday Night Jazz Show and Classic Salsa at the Harlem Meer Performance Festival. And, in a truly original twist on the Wizard of Oz, Dora is an ordinary Latina teen gets whisked off to an extraordinary new land during her quinceañera party. Expect some fabulous salsa- and merengue-infused beats!

Friday July 29th

5:30 pm: Williamsburg Waterfront Concerts: They Might Be Giants and Eugene Mirman “& Pretty Good Friends
This looks like it’ll be more of the adult version of They Might Be Giants but it’s free, it’s in a nice park and it’s a great picnic opportunity.  You might want to cover the kids’ ears during the Eugene Mirman’s comedy show…

6:30 pm: Free Friday Night Jam: Brooklyn Arabic Music Trio
The Middle Eastern music from this group will expand kids’ musical horizons; a trumpet, santir, oud, violin, qanun and percussive instruments help bring contemporary and traditional songs to life.

7:00 pm: 33rd Annual Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow
Bring the whole family to this huge intertribal dance party at the Queens County Farm Museum. (It’s the largest, oldest powwow in New York City!) Also Saturday and Sunday.

7:00 pm: The Alex Levin Trio’s Friday Night Jazz Shows
At this weekly jazz jam, children under 16 can bring their own instruments and let loose alongside the band for a few tunes.

Saturday July 30th

2:00 pm: Great Jazz On The Great Hill
Bring your picnic blanket for an afternoon of live jazz music by The George Gee Swing Orchestra and Jazzmobile Jazz Vocal Competition winners Pete McGuiness and Brianna Thomas. The afternoon also includes a swing dance workshop and demonstration with Clyde Wilder and an ongoing interpretive art project for families.

3:00 pm: Mil’s Trills Summer Bash
Amelia Robinson brings her ukulele to Brooklyn for a performance filled with a host of musical guests and their unique instruments.

Sunday July 31st

11:00 am: Junta Hispana
Junta Hispana is a Hispanic Heritage Celebration that encompasses all twenty Spanish-speaking countries. It features live music and dance on a main stage and several mini-stages, a variety of crafts, and authentic foods that celebrate the culture, tradition, and heritage of these countries.

12:00 pm: Little Club Heads Family Dance Party: Two Year Anniversary
Little Club Heads is a once a month afternoon dance party for parents and kids ages 12 months – 9 years old. Little Club Heads features lots of dancing, fun entertainment, face painting, clowns, balloon twister,cartoon characters, and Games.

1:00 pm: A Clearing In The Forest: Music
Live African music and a found instrument workshop with Women of the Calabash.

2:00 pm: Lincoln Center Out of Doors
A treat for the ears, this afternoon fest kicks off with a West African drumming and dance performance (2pm), move on to a set from students of the Memphis-based Stax Music Academy (3:30pm) and finishes up with gospel and soul anthems by teenage performers from Harlem (5pm).

2:00 pm: Central Park Conservancy’s Harlem Meer Performance Festival – Willie Villegas y Entre Amigos (Classic Salsa)
Enjoy live lakeside music in the Park’s beautiful northern end at the Central Park Conservancy’s weekly Harlem Meer Performance Festival concert.

2:00 pm: The Yellow Brick Road
In this salsa- and merengue-infused adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, Dora is an ordinary Latina teen who gets whisked off to an extraordinary new land during her quinceañera party. Tickets are available at the theater on a first-come, first-served basis beginning one hour before the day’s first performance.
