Happy Weekend, Everyone! We are loving some of the fun events we discovered to keep you and your family busy this weekend. The Day of A Thousand Cranes event in Thompson Square Park is a chance to do something interesting and also contribute to a wonderful cause.  You and your family can construct origami cranes and donate for the Make a Wish Foundation to support children in both NYC and Japan. There are some fun local events like the Mil’s Trills Summer Bash in Carroll Gardens, the 1st Annual Brooklyn Pirates Festival in Red Hook and a performance and reading of Gwendolyn, The Graceful Pig at Covenant Ballet Theatre of Brooklyn. If you are looking for some unique crafts and delicious local fare check out two of our favorite new markets – The DeKalb Market and the Northside Market. Pier 6 Open with New Fishing Area
The lawns are open weekly Thursdays through Sundays
The 15,000-square-feet of lawn space is now open on Pier 6. The gorgeous space features a 1.6-acre destination playground called the “The Water Lab” complete with sprinklers, ropes, a sand box, swings and slides, a volleyball court, an outdoor food court and a new fishing area located along the north edge of Pier 6. Smurfs Scavenger Hunt
To celebrate the release of the new film The Smurfs, NYC and CO is hosting several events in the city such as this scavenger hunt at the New York Botanical Garden. This event is free with an All-Garden Pass. All-Garden Pass admission, $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and students, $8 for children ages 2–12, free for members and children under 2. Free Friday Night Jams: Brooklyn Arabic Music Trio
This edition of the Free Friday Night Jam session will feature traditional and contemporary Middle Eastern music from the Brooklyn Arabic Music Trio. 33rd Annual Thunderbird American Indian Mid-Summer Pow Wow
Celebrate New York City ‘s oldest and largest powwow during three days of Native American dance competitions. Over 40 Indian nations are represented at this event that will also include Native American art, crafts, jewelry and foods will be for sale. The event is $5.00 children, $10.00 general. Waterfront Workouts: Belly Dance with Dodge YMCA

Oumou Sangaré
Dubbed by New York Magazine as “the most celebrated performer in West Africa,” families will love checking out the Malian singer Oumou Sangare at the Prospect Park Bandshell. The concert will include tribal rhythms and Arabic music from Bassam Saba who “weaves together Lebanese and Arabic folk music with Turkish Gypsy styles and Russian motifs, playing oud, flutes, violin and buzuq…surprisingly funksome stuff.” (Time Out NY) The concert is free but Celebrate Brooklyn requests a $3 donation so that they can continue to offer exciting shows every year. Intrepid Summer Movie Series: The Captain
The Intrepid is hosting its 3rd Annual Intrepid Summer Movie Series this summer. This week you and your family can catch a viewing of The Captains – a film follows William Shatner as he seeks out each of the actors who have played the Captains during all of the years of Star Trek. Come wearing Trekkie gear and receive a poster for The Captains.  However, they ask that you not bring in anything resembling a weapon for security purposes. Attendees should bring their own lawn chairs, picnic baskets, blankets, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. No outside alcohol is permitted. Evening Bat Walks in Central Park
Have you ever wanted to see bats at night? Well, maybe this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but for those of you that want you learn more about these nocturnal creatures will love this evening bat walk in central park. Hosted by Brad Klein, Danielle Gustafson, and other members of the New York City Bat Group, the walk is aided by a detector that amplifies the bats’ high-frequency chirps. The DeKalb Market

Housed in a collection of salvaged shipping containers, the DeKalb Market opened last week bringing together Brooklyn’s creative entrepreneurs. Located on a old containers and barren land, they are creating a new green space for downtown Brooklyn by housing vendors in 22 re-purposed shipping containers. Expect to find food vendors that range from soul food to vegan, boutique vendors like our favorites Rasany and Hank & JoJo, along with artists and makers of all kinds. The space will also be used for events and performances, making this market a potential hub day and night.  Details: The Dekalb Market at 332 Flatbush Avenue- at Willoughby. 3rd Annual Brooklyn Waterfront Epic Ride
You and your family will love checking out the 3rd Annual Brooklyn Waterfront Epic Ride, a 40-mile ride along Brooklyn’s entire waterfront and the Jamaica Bay Greenway. The ride will begin at 9am in Greenpoint and finish at the Rockaway Beach Club. To register, please go to www.brooklyngreenway.org. Following the ride you can go to the beach or make your way back independently via the A train, a Rockaway ferry to Wall Street Pier 11 from Riis Landing (at 3:00PM or 5:00PM) or by riding back on Flatbush Avenue, the most direct route to northern Brooklyn. Family Art Project at Wave Hill—Crayon Flowers
In this bilingual workshop, Crayon Flowers/Flores de cera, kids can create their own wax mosaic flower with crayon bits and heat from the sun. Families take home the flowers to use as a wall hanging or incorporate into a multi-colored drawing. Free for members, $2.00 children, $4.00 seniors, students, $8.00 adults. Northside Market
Check out the latest market to hit Williamsburg. Featuring artisanal and handmade goods, crafts, local musical acts and a DJ, Northside Market is an innovative new space to check out local and international goods. The pop-up market also features a cool artist gallery and even has such 25-30 food vendors such as Cantina Royal, Dub Pies, Robicelli’s (Cupcakes), Lots O’ Lobstah, and Cookie Road. We really love that this 4,100 square foot indoor space is air-conditioned and that every week throughout the summer you can expect to find something new like candy walls or mini golf. Family Program: Skyscraper Smurfs
To celebrate the release of The Smurfs, the Skyscraper Education Team will lead kids through an educational activity as they explore some of the architecture featured in the film. Kids will get to construct their own skyscrapers using recycled materials that they can tear down and rebuild over and over again. A Day of A Thousand Cranes
At the end of World War II,12-year-old Sadako Sasaki, suffered from radiation poisoning after the bombing of Hiroshima.  Inspired by the legend that says a crane will grant you one wish if you fold 1000 of them, she tried to save her life by doing just that.  She died trying to complete her goal.  Due to the recent events in Fukushima, 45% of the children there are testing positive for radioactive thyroid glands. Through Day of A Thousand Cranes event the organization hopes to make wishes come true for children in New York City and across the world in Japan by supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. At the event, you and your family can fold cranes and donate. Yoga class for 5-10 year olds
This fun children’s yoga class is designed for children 5-10 year-olds with Nicole Levin, a children’s yoga teacher. Levin instructs a class for kids at Usha Veda Yoga in Greenpoint incorporating the teaching of yoga poses, mudras (hand gestures), breathing techniques, and mantras (sounds and songs). Mil’s Trills Summer Bash
Check out this fun music event for the whole family as you rock on to Amelia Robinson and her original, quirky and interactive tunes. Playing a ukulele, Robinson will also be joined by some musical guests playing unique instruments, like the Stroh Violin and Didgeridoo. All kids are free (all ages) and adults are $10 in advance online or $15/adult on the door. 1st Annual Brooklyn Treasure Cove Maritime Bacchanal and Red Hook Pirates Festival
It’s not everyday that you get to see a pirate ship in Brooklyn..but you and your family can check one out at the Brooklyn IKEA Erie Basin Park this Saturday. This fun pirate festival,  sponsored by the Urban Divers Estuary Conservancy is a great way to learn about environmental education and conservation all while exploring activities like a pirate costume contest, an ecocruise aboard a 32-foot Indian shipping canoe, a tour of the EnviroMedia Mobile, a nature and maritime museum on wheels and hear some live music. Families can enjoy a free performance of the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
