Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about registering for fall sports. We’re giving you early notice so you won’t miss signing up for The South Brooklyn Baseball League‘s (SBBL) baseball, softball and flag football teams. If you have a boy or girl aged 4-17, you can register for one of these teams. The leagues are run by parent volunteers- love that community effort! For all of these teams, simply submit a registration form so that SBBL can know how many players they will have on hand. They are also having an in-person registration drive on Sunday, August 14th from 1:00-3:00 pm, at Dimattina Field (Hicks St near Hamilton Avenue) where you can learn more about the teams and meet with coaches. Check out the team offerings below or email Steven Pisano at spisano1@nyc.rr.com for additional information.
Instructional Division (4-5 years old)
This very popular baseball program introduces young players to all the skills of the game–throwing, catching, fielding, running, and pitching–and then we play scrimmage games to teach basic strategies of offense and defense. This is not a drop-off program so parents can be involved in the fun.
Details: Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 am (September 10th-October 29). DiMattina Field (Carroll Gardens). Fee: $125, includes uniform.
Pony Clinic (7-8 years old)
The Pony Clinic is for kids that are looking to sharpen their skills by learning advanced elements of the game such as bunting, base stealing, rundowns, outfield relays, making double-plays, etc. This also includes a continuation on fielding, batting, and pitching and scrimmage games.
Details: Sundays, 3:00-5:00 pm (September 11-October 30), DiMattina Field (Carroll Gardens). Fee: $125, includes uniform.
Fall Baseball
This is a travel league whose players have some experience. The games are played on the weekends and are always double-headers. So they play 6 weekends and get in 12 games.
Details: Registration deadline for this team is August 20th. The season is September 10-October 30. Fee: Ranges from $150 to $225 based on age.
Girls Fall Softball
The SBBL runs its own league for girls’ softball in the fall (September 10th -October 30th). Those interested can sign up individually ($75 for the season) or, if you play for a team already, you can have your coach bring the entire team in ($400 for the entire team). This division welcomes outside teams and they already have teams from Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx so far, with teams from Manhattan joining us as well.
Details: The registration deadlines are August 20th for outside teams and September 1st for individual players.
Flag Football
A national program sponsored by the NFL, flag football is a safe form of football, with no equipment worn and no contact allowed between players. This means that size does not matter – meaning that it is great for girls and kids who like to run since it is a very fast and active sport. Flag football is played from September-November in the Prospect Park league. Age divisions are 7-8s, 9-11s, 12-14s, and 15-17s. (In the 12-14 division, boys and girls have separate divisions. For 7-8s and 9-11s, it is coed. There is no division at this time for girls 15-17.)
Details: Registration Deadline is August 15th and games are played on the weekends.
