If you’re like many NYC parents looking for new schooling options, this post is for you. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with some wonderful people representing BASIS Independent Brooklyn to talk with them about their new K-12 school set to open in September 2014 in Red Hook, Brooklyn! After personally meeting with the CEO, Associate Director of Student Enrollment, and Director of Student Enrollment, I can honestly say I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to teach at BASIS Independent, go to BASIS Independent, or send my children to BASIS Independent more! I got such a strong sense that the school provides a challenging yet fun environment with a strong sense of ‘realness’ to it…kinda like Brooklyn!

Here’s why you’re going to want to learn more about BASIS Independent Brooklyn.

Their mission is “to raise the level of American education to the highest international standards.”  They provide a strong emphasis on academics and challenging oneself to ask questions beyond simply memorizing answers. The educational model BASIS Independent Brooklyn uses has shown effectiveness thereby earning BASIS.ed mention in Amanda Ripley’s The Smartest Kids in the World and How They Got That Way. For example BASIS Scottsdale has proven to be not just nationally competitive but globally ranking in the top 1% of the world’s schools in math and reading, and top 5% in science. More rankings can be found here.

BASIS Independent Brooklyn is committed to providing a warm, stimulating environment while remaining encouraging as well. The school is founded on three basic pillars:

Knowledgeable, brilliant teachers

Rigorous, accelerated curriculum

Teacher-student accountability

Combine those three pillars with incredible national and international rankings, enthusiastic teachers, motivated youth, and a fun environment to top it off (oh, and did I forget to mention at a fraction of the cost of other private schools?) and I’d say your kids may be as excited as you are for their first day of school! Join them for their next parent information session in DUMBO on November 13th.

  1. I’m skeptical. Red Hook’s children have sooo many needs that do not include a private school. I know, I know: who said this school was for Red Hook? It’s just going to be located here. Perhaps those in favor would like to come to a discussion with Diane Ravitch at PS 15 on Dec. 11 at 5pm. The foremost education historian will have something to say about this. Until then, check out her book, Reign of Error. She mentions the shady business dealings of the Basis company on p. 172.
