Dr. Villanueva & Dr. Berg

I can not say enough bad things about both of these care providers. They are rude, disrespectful, boastful and totally disconnected with the needs of pregnant women. Dr. Berg said things while stitching after the birth that were so disrespectful and Dr. Villanueva, after arriving over an hour after the birth, yelled and ranted about what her day was like – seemingly unaware that it was not all about her!

I highly recommend Dr. Brennan. He and his wife Joyce, who works in his office, are the greatest people: caring, responsible, reliable, true professionals. Their practice goes beyond medical issues and includes help with research of various treatment options available: birthing classes, parenting workshops, child care options, and many other things. They delivered both of my kids and would go for the third one just to have “brennans’ experience” again

-LadaMy new doctor is Dr. John Brennan- and I found him on your blog! He is wonderful- I really, really like him and feel so comfortable with him. I’ve never had a male doctor and didn’t think I’d like to, but he and his office are fantastic. Much more in tuned with the kind of experience I had hoped for the first time. Dr. Brennan asked how my prior birth experience was and I told him how difficult it had been and then I said, but I understand everyone wants this to be their most wonderful, special day, yet for the hospitals no one is that special, it is their job, so this is why is seems so clinical. He corrected me and said that that was ridiculous, that I should be treated like the most important person on that day, and have things just the way I want them. He promised me a much better experience on my second go. I sure hope so

-RhondaI started out with Dr. John Brennan who is a very capable and kind OB/GYN on Clinton St. I do recommend him but at 29 weeks I switched to the midwives and could not have been happier. Dr. Brennan is after all an OB and though his c-section rate is “only” 15% (as opposed to 30% like some docs) that was just too high for me. Also his wife, Jayce is present in a very tiny exam room at every exam. She is extremely intelligent and knowledgeable and I think that as a male doctor he may have rules that require a woman in the room which I understood but still was not comfortable with. And I kept trying to get him to birth like a midwive until he finally, FINALLY (at 29 weeks!) said to me “Sara, I’m not a midwife! You need a midwife!” I credit him tremendously with saying that. My husband loved him and was very nervous about switching to midwives and that’s why it took me so long to do it. If my Doctor hadn’t listen to me so well that he basically pushed me to go to them I may not have done and I don’t think I would have been as happy. My labor was 65 hours long. And although Dr. Brennan is very, very good i just didn’t feel confident that his TRAINING would permit him to be as patient if I had a very very long labor – as I did.

Dr. Chuu is at Roosevelt and she was amazing at a birth I attended with her two days ago. She was like birthing with a midwife (except she wore surgical scrubs). She was incredibly mellow and patient. She encouraged my client to move around in a series of positions, de-emphasized the fetal machines and monitors in favor of really paying attention to the laboring women. She never encouraged interventions of any type with this birth and she was funny and fun to be with on top of that. She was so kind to my client and praised her over and over for the terrific birth. She is new to this hospital (and a newer doctor) and she has experience with turning babies to avoid sections apparently.

I went to Murray Hill OBGYN for my first son and gave birth at NYU. Murray Hill has since split to Cityscape OBGYN and Kipsbay OBGYN. I would not recommend the doctor who gave birth to my son, Dr. Carmit Archibald (who is now with Cityscape). I had no choice because of their group practice (I liked other doctors, especially Dr. Rosenberg). Dr. Archibald is young, and I believe lacked experience. I ended up having an emergency c-section and she could not pull my baby out! Luckily the senior anesthesiologistintervened and saved my son’s life and health. It took me a long long time to heal from this traumatic experience. What bothers me most is that she did not even come see me after the delivery. Dr. Archibald was pregnant at that time. I hope her own birthing experience changed her attitude…

Dr. Vanessa Dinnall
Dr. Dinnall earned her undergraduate degree in biology at The King’s College in Briarcliff Manor, New York, and received her doctorate in medicine from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), in the Bronx. As a research assistant at AECOM, she studied methods for determining oligohydramnios, or low volume of amniotic fluid during pregnancy; also, she examined the effect of estrogen replacement therapy on osteoporosis, a project that was part of the Women’s Health Initiative clinical trials. During her training in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt, Dr. Dinnall was recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000, was named Berlex Best Teaching Resident in 2001, and served as administrative chief resident in 2002. She is board certified, and is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
I saw Dr. Dinnall based on some extraordinary recommendations from my doula and a couple of friends. Her office was completely disorganized: cancelling appointments, rescheduling and then extreme wait times. When I finally was able to see her I had an hour plus ten minutes wait. I queried a couple of other women waiting in her office as to whether or not this was typical: one woman said that she had never waited less than an hour (and on that day had been waiting for 1 and three-quarters hour!) and another said the same too. When I saw Dr. Dinnall, she was pleasant, warm, professional and caring. I understand why women are willing to wait to see her. When I asked Dr. Dinnall about the disorganization, she said she knew it was a problem and had been trying to work on it with changing the phone system and personnel recently, but admitted that the waiting room times was due to her having unseen emergencies with patients. Having been to another OB/GYN, who, for 2 years, has never been more than 10 minutes wait, I couldn’t understand this. I went back to my former OB and am so happy. (One solution to avoid the waiting room delays: Dr. Dinnall suggested making the first appointment of the day or the first appointment after lunch).

I waited for 1.5 hours and didn’t even see her. There were even two people waiting in front of me!
-EricaI was a long time patient of Dr. Yael Fuchs and regret ever going to this provider. I do not recommend anyone see this physician. You have to wait forever for an appointment, the office wait time is out of control and once you see the doctor, you will be rushed. The doctor never gets back to you in a timely fashion even if it is an emergency. The staff is very, very rude. To top it off the doctor will charge you for procedures that are supposedly not covered by your insurance, but after submitting my claim to my insurance I come to find out that they do cover it plus I was over charged. Don’t expect to get reimbursed by her either if over charged.

Their resumes are online. This practice is generally highly recommended. They birth at St. Lukes Roosevelt. When calling, you must mention that you are wishing to birth at the birth center. You must also make sure that all of their back-ups will deliver in the birth center, as
well, so that you are most likely to birth there, if all is well.

She is wonderful, she will really sit down and explain things to you. She treats you like an intelligent person that deserves a thorough and intelligent follow-up from our exam.Dr. Russell takes a lot of different insurance.
-LauraDr. Russell is amazing- she was on vacation when I had my baby, but she delivered a lot of my friends’ babies and they said it was a lovely experience. She does DNCs, abortions, and amnios- she can do everything and that makes you really feel cared for by one person. Office is very friendly but expect to wait for your appointments. She gives you all the time in the world- which is why you probably have to wait.
-Justine
I have attended three births with Dr. Russell at this point – each of them very different from each other – and I feel really confident recommending her to pregnant women looking for an OB/hospital birth. I have seen her support clients through really difficult pregnancies and high risk births as well as very easy pregnancies and natural childbirths. She is calm and confident, really present for her clients, and very willing to work with her clients needs and desires.

Established with the goal of providing progressive healthcare to women throughout the lifecycle, our practice is located in the heart of Manhattan’s Soho. We offer a full range of obstetric and gynecologic care. Our practice consists of five physicians and one certified nurse-midwife. We have a sonogram facility and offer lab services and procedures on site. Deliver at NYU-Tisch.
I had a bad experience with my OB/Gyn, found out I was pregnant, and immediately started hunting for a new doc. I found the best all women doctor’s office!! It is in Soho and called Spring OB/Gyn. I see Dr. Emily White and would highly recommend her or any other doctor in their office. After week 24 you rotate and see all of them including their midwife. All of the staff is professional and kind. And, for a regular office visit I am never there for more than 1/2 an hour!!! Amazing!! They are responsive and supportive. This means a lot to me as I have never been one who even remotely likes going to the doctor.
-CrystalI love my doctors office, Spring Street OBGYN. The doctor I had seen least during my pregnancy was the one who delivered our son. She was very present and available during my labor, and also during my recovery. I was so grateful for her company and care.

This office really tries to have you deliver with the same OB that you see throughout your pregnancy. You do go to a meet and greet where you meet the other doctors, but you aren’t required to see each of them for office visits. Dr. Sylvestre offered to work with a midwife with me when I mentioned that I wanted a drug-free birth. Instead I chose a doula that was fantastic and they worked in tandem with ease. Dr. Sylvestre was very methodical and relaxed about the labor- I didn’t feel pressured in any way or that he was watching a clock for either personal or medical reasons. The nurses were exceptional. Dr. Sylvestre hadn’t performed an episotomy in 10 months before my birth! Dr. Grunebaum worked with me on my early labor and follow-up and was full of wit. Both doctors supported my laboring at home even though my water had broken many hours earlier- Dr. Sylvestre signed off on it even with major pushback from the Chief at the hospital (New York Presbyterian-Cornell). Dr. Sylvestre is reserved with an amenable, easy-going demeanor. Sometimes he feels a little awkward and hurried though. Both doctors are European so they prefer minimal medical intervention during labor. New note: I am seeing Dr. Sylvestre again for my second pregnancy and feel reassured. He is not chatty and you don’t end up feeling like you have had a long visit like with Dr. Russell (see above) for example, but I think he is extremely competent and skilled. Dr. Kalish delivered our baby. She was confident, reasurring and friendly. I was only with her for 1 hour though as this baby came so fast- so hard to say what she would have been like in a long labor.
-KarenI was pregnant with twins so the pregnancy was considered “high risk” from the beginning – a midwife or birthing center was never an option. Because of the likelihood of delivering early, I focused my search on finding a doctor at a hospital with a great NICU. Luckily there are a number of great options in NYC and I settled on Cornell. My doctor, Robin Kalish, is part of the high-risk group there. My main complaint with the practice is that it was very busy and I always had long waits at my appointments. The birth itself went surprisingly smooth considering the ups and downs of the pregnancy. Both of the babies were head-down so my doctor allowed me to deliver vaginally. I was induced and spent most of the day in a regular birthing room.

A faculty practice of St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan. The Chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Dr. George Mussalli is one of the few maternal-fetal medicine specialists who still delivers babies. Dr. Jaqueline Worth brings more than a decade’s experience as a busy obstetrician. Together, they have delivered thousands of babies in New York City. Some patients come to Village Obstetrics for the commitment to minimally invasive care and low cesarean section rate. Others choose the practice because of the doctors’ long history of working collaboratively with midwives and doulas. Whatever care you need during your pregnancy, you will find Village Obstetrics warm and supportive. Dr. Mussalli and Dr. Worth share a genuine love of obstetrics and are available to patients 24 hours a day for medical emergencies. Throughout your pregnancy, they are always happy to answer any questions you have about your health or the health of your baby. Located in Greenwich Village, we are affiliated with St. Vincent’s Hospital, where compassionate care has been a hallmark for over 150 years. The hospital offers excellent nursing, low rates of cesarean section and one of the finest neonatal units in the city. At St. Vincent’s and Village Obstetrics, we are proud of our shared commitment to excellent medicine and compassionate unhurried care.
I highly recommend Village Obstetrics. Dr. Worth just delivered Leo in July and I had a really good experience there. Both her and Dr. Mussalli are so sweet and they really listen to what you want. They just added two more midwives to their practice who I didn’t get a chance to meet unfortunately. The only down side with the practice is that although they’re new, they’re already pretty popular so appointment wait times can be long which I have to admit started to annoy me toward the end.
