Hours: M-F 9am-12pm or 12:30 pm-3:30 pm Ages: 2-4 The Playgroup program draws on several leading models in early childhood education. Our goal is to develop the child as thinker-confident, curious, and ready to take on challenges. We offer: A mixed age classroom: Working side by side, two, three, and four year old children not only learn from each other, they teach each other as well. Mixed age groups build confidence and encourage each child to get as much out of an activity as his or her individual development allows. An art-driven program: Music, dance, studio art, creative drama, and puppetry are used to enhance all areas of the curriculum and offer additional challenges and opportunities for learning. Group work: In small and large groups, children hone their social skills, develop respect for each other, and learn to solve problems as a team. An integrated curriculum that employs children’s multiple intelligences: Children learn through touch, by sight, from moving their bodies, by visualizing a solution. Playgroup children use all these methods to explore scientific and mathematical concepts and prepare themselves to read. As Playgroup parents, your active participation is the key to the unique and dynamic culture of our school. Each family participates in two ways: by spending a few mornings or afternoons each year as a “duty parent” in the classroom, and by performing a nominal administrative or maintenance job to ensure the smooth running of the program.

The oldest preschool in Brooklyn, it was founded in 1928 by 12 parish mothers who believed that children from
different families could learn from one another in a playful and nurturing environment. Today Grace Church School has 125 children participating in an early education program noted for its emphasis on the whole child. In addition, we run a new mothers group and “Together Time” classes for toddlers. While the school is affiliated with Grace Church, our curriculum is nonsectarian. We recognize and celebrate the diversity of faiths and beliefs among our families. Located in the Grace Church parish house, the school has seven classrooms, two sunny rooftop playgrounds, a gymnasium, a kitchen, rooms for music and creative movement classes, and a shady secret garden. The school community gains a heightened sense of comfort and beauty from the 19th-century architecture and from the quiet splendor of the church itself, where the children sing for their families during the winter holidays and at school year’s end.Hope N. Prosky, school director since 1983, came to Grace in the late 1970s to establish the Twos Program. She has been an early childhood teacher for more than 40 years and
is a state-licensed school psychologist. Many of our teachers have been with us for 20 years or more. All our teachers have extensive training in early childhood education, and head teachers have a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

Hands on World is an international language and art center located in Carroll Gardens Brooklyn. Hands on World creates an atmosphere that instills a high level of comfort and confidence with cultural diversity because the programs, taught by native speakers, occur in different languages simultaneously. This not only takes the foreignness out of foreign languages, it also stimulates people’s natural curiosity about the world around them. Hands on World’s approach to learning new languages is through the arts, as it has been established that language acquisition emerges from the creative part of the brain. Integrating the vocabulary and structure of foreign languages into interesting, creative and stimulating art related projects removes the intimidation often involved in learning new languages. The result is a virtually seamless process of language acquisition. We offer French, Italian and Spanish language immersion programs to children in the pre-school age range. We have French, Italian and Spanish language after-school programs for school aged children at all levels of language proficiency and we offer adult language programs in French, Italian, Spanish and English as a Second Language. We also offer art classes for school aged children and adults in English. For those wanting more one on one instruction, we offer private lessons for all ages. Finally, we offer a summer program geared towards 2 to 10 year olds that runs during seven consecutive weeks from the beginning of July through mid-August.

L’école des petits

Brooklyn, N.Y. 11217
Welcome to L’école des petits, a warm, stimulating French language immersion program for children 2 to 5. “L’école des petits” will teach French through stories, songs, educational games, numbers, the alphabet and everyday sentences that will last a lifetime. We believe that fun and creative work enable children to get involved and enjoy learning and speaking French. The school is small, which means a good interaction between parents, teachers and children.
What we offer:
• Full time French language immersion 8:00 – 4:00 Extended hours 4:00 – 6:00
• French native speaking teachers
• Program based on French “Education Nationale” preschool
• Stimulating activities for optimal social, emotional, intellectual, and physical skills
Benefits of early immersion:
In order to reap the full benefit of bilingualism, exposure to the second language should begin as early as possible. The chances of achieving full fluency in nother language are much higher if study is begun during early childhood, since the human brain is wired to learn language during this critical period. Immersion duplicates the conditions in which we all learn our first language—extended contact with a community of fluent speakers—and is by far the most effective method of language teaching.

All of the classes are immersion classes. We collaborate with professional and brilliant early childhood educators, composers and musicians, artists dedicated to working with children in order to create a unique program. These programs serve children aged 1 to 12 years old. LLS is a place where children engage and explore foreign cultures in genuine inquiry together and where children and teachers come to know and appreciate one another as community members.” These classes are small (limit 8 kids).
I have been taking my 23-month-old daughter to a music and movement class at the Language and Laughter Studio. After two classes, I was blown away by the quality. The teacher, Muriel, with her enchanting singing voice, expressive gestures, puppets, balloons, bubbles, parachute and rattles, connects with children’s natural love of movement and music. The songs are her original works, unusual, simple and memorable; layer after layer gently teaches counting, colors, vocabulary, etc…in French. I feel that I ought to describe this class in very poetic terms …it is awe-inspiring and perfectly orchestrated, not a moment is wasted, perfectly geared to captivate toddlers and preschoolers…not to mention all the adults in the room, who all have child-like smiles on their faces. After class, it feels
like we’ve participated in a Cirque de Soleil performance! For French-speaking toddlers, it would be an equally wonderful and enriching music and movement pre-school class. If you are interested in language classes, for yourself or your child (or baby), I encourage you to check out Language & Laughter Studio, all the classes appear to be of this caliber.
-YanaMy daughter, now 3.5 has taken at least 4 different French classes there as well as French camp this summer. The teachers are really talented and incredible, able to engage young children and expose them to language through creative music, dance and other media. It is a wonderful, safe environment for even the youngest of children. Each class is well thought out, the teachers are native speakers of the language with broad teaching experience, and there is a focus on age appropriate challenges. Finally, my favorite part about it is that nothing is “canned”. All the art projects have an organic bent where the kids do the work – no mommy/daddy or nanny/sitter art here! There are also Spanish classes, after school classes, and in the fall they will offer an ethics class for children 6-12. I can’t recommend this place enough, but check out this gem for yourself.

children to ask the right questions, and lead them to discover the answers for themselves. Learning becomes its own reward, with each success fueling new discoveries. Most importantly, through the learning process students begin to build a framework for leading a meaningful life.

We offer a high quality education to a multi-religious school population in a nurturing, yet challenging environment. Classes are for children from nursery through 8th grade. Our tradition of academic excellence is virtually unmatched. Each year standardized tests are given in more than five-hundred public, private and religious schools in New York City. In 2001 we were the only school in Brooklyn — and one of only two schools in all of New York City — in which 100% of our students passed the 4th grade math and reading standardized tests. We would welcome the opportunity to have your child be a part of that tradition. They also have a After-school pickup, Vacation Day care that is pro-rated, summer camp, and preschool.

The nursery and pre-K programs are the heart of Open House. We begin in mid-September and end in early June. There are breaks for Christmas and New Years, midwinter, and in spring. The children are grouped by age, and the days and hours they will be in attendance. Our class groups are small and staffed by experienced, professional, early childhood educators. We value home school partnerships because the input we receive helps us to comfortably meet the changing needs of each child. At the heart of our philosophy is a belief that children learn best by playing and doing in a thoughtfully prepared environment. This developmental/ interactive approach shapes every aspect of our school, from our curriculum planning to the arrangement of the classroom spaces. Each group follows a lively, but familiar daily routine which includes ample “choice time” periods. They also have other programs: summer camp, after 3 play, extended Day and vacation camp. You must call in one a particular day that has been predetermined to get in your tour request: your request will be pooled with others in a lottery to determine if you will be selected to go on a tour.

I wanted to let you know about an upstart school age 2+ in Fort Greene called TRILOK PRE SCHOOL in the ground floor of a brownstone. It’s run by these two wonderful women, one with degrees in dance, theater, arts and another with degrees in art and education. It has a peaceful, sharing explorative philosophy. With a max class size of 5-8 and an additional helper. My son has been going for two months and has already gone to see a puppet show, the zoo, the botanical gardens, a traditional indian dance performance. He learns new words in different languages every day and plays and plays in a creative loving environment. They take care of nap time on these adorable naps, you provide lunch, and they serve it at these adorable little tables. There is a small backyard with a play thingie (slide, etc.) I just love them. AND the price is right. It’s a very special place.
-JessicaOur 2 ½ year old daughter has been attending Trilok pre-school since Spring and is looking forward to go to school every day. She is learning about different cultures and languages with books, songs, music and dance. We love that the groups are small. There are two teachers per class of about 10 students. In addition, Trilok has visiting teachers coming in at different days of the week for weaving, art and music.
