Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co

The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. <http://826nyc.org/> is a superheroic kind of place. It supports kids and teachers in so many ways AND sells superhero supplies! Sound like an odd combination? Well, yes, but if you know writer David Egger’s work <http://www.culturevulture.net/Books/Heartbreaking.htm> (who founded it), it all makes a little bit of sense. The store sells capes, grappling hooks, antimatter, and more and all the proceeds from the store go directly to 826NYC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. 826NYC provides drop-in tutoring, field trips, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of the programs are free.

Clifton Corner: A Tutoring & Coaching Center
Sandra Clifton, Director–MEd, BA, CPC

53 Prospect Park West, Studio #3A
Brooklyn, New York 11215Hi Karen,
I taught for over 16 years in both public and private schools, and now run a tutoring and coaching center in Park Slope for 5th-12th graders. My areas of specialty are English/writing and reading comprehension, along with providing direction with college application essays. In addition, as a certified life coach, I support students with issues around self-esteem, motivation, organization, focus, and improving their “school game of success.” This past summer, I became an associate member of IECA, and provide gentle direction and insight about factors to consider for the best fit concerning school placement when their sons/daughters are in school transition. The Clifton Corner was established to provide a safe, nurturing place for students to risk new ideas and strengthen skills by building on their strengths. During the third year of business in Park Slope, I hired eight tutors to provide individual tutorials in all subject areas/levels–English, science, math, history, and foreign language. Our focus is to develop relationships that become part of a child’s weekly ritual and thus become important “cornerstones” in an extended community of support.

Sandra Clifton has helped me in more ways than I thought possible. She has taught me to go the extra mile and embrace taking on challenges. I have been with her for three years and she has helped me with everything from college essays to how to strategize and organize my time efficiently. Because of her help, I was able to make honor roll at my school and get accepted into three colleges. Without the Clifton Corner, I wouldn’t know what to do.

I am a certified teacher with over seven years of teaching experience. I have an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University, where I graduated with high honors. I received my masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with focuses in both Literacy and Technology. My teaching and tutoring experience ranges from grades K-8. I have taught in New York City, Massachusetts, and Indiana. For the past six months since I have returned to New York, I have been working as a Curriculum Developer for Teaching Matters, Inc, (www.teachingmatters.org) creating a year-long writing curriculum for middle school students. I am currently teaching at PS 89 in Tribeca. My expertise as a teacher allows me to help children individually in a tutoring setting. I have experience raising students’ standardized test scores without taking the excitement out of learning. I am also familiar with much of the curriculum used in New York public and private schools, including TERC and Everyday Math and Reading/Writing Workshop. I have a strong background in helping struggling readers succeed, and meeting the needs of all students, including gifted and talented children. I offer private tutoring for children in grades K-8, in the privacy of your own home. Flexible scheduling after school and on weekends.

My experience: For the last year I have been a 4th grade intervention teacher at PS 261 on Smith and Pacific. For 2 years before that I was a 3rd grade special/general education teacher at PS 261. Before that I worked at The Churchill School for 2 years as a 3-4 grade special education teacher. I am dually certified in both General & Special Education. I received my masters in Special & General Education from Bank Street. I am very flexible and can work with you and/or your children’s teachers to best help your kids. We can begin right away or start over the summer in order to keep those minds sharp until school starts! It’s important to me that the sessions be as enjoyable as possible and I always include games – it’s important to me that the kids have fun.
