The New Victory Theater is my go-to place for children’s entertainment: I have been taking my children there since they were 18 months. This is real theater for kids- sophisticated puppetry, street dance, innovative acrobatics- and all tailored to the mental abilities of a child.  Three new productions at the New Victory this fall include a barrio circus, an interactive theater for the very young, and puppetry from London.

“Vigor, danger and attitude infuse every act in the U.S. premiere of URBAN, a circus featuring 15 performers who share their experiences of barrio life through feats of strength, aerial stunts, acrobatics and more.  An original commission for CircusFest 2010 at London’s Roundhouse, URBAN is a freestyle portrait of a society where dance and music are the safety valves of everyday life.  Weaving a tapestry of personal stories, a true narrative of the streets of Cali, Colombia, URBAN is based on the lives of the young cast; telling the world what it’s like in their reality, through their eyes, in their voices.  Live reggaeton, an urban form of music that has its roots in Latin and Caribbean rhythms, underscores lyrics like escribe con los pies, poeta de la calle—write with your feet, poet of the street— in this 2010 Brighton Fringe Festival Audience Choice Award winner.”

“From London’s acclaimed Oily Cart, creators of innovative, multi-sensory and interactive productions for the very young, comes the U.S. premiere of RING A DING DING, an imaginative and energetic work of participatory theater for children ages 3 to 5 years old.  When Alice scolds her dog for chasing his own tail, the beloved pup runs away, and to find him, she is forced to embark on a tricycle-riding adventure filled with zany characters and preposterous events.  Little theatergoers sit around a wooden wheel that revolves while the actors perform in a cut out space in the middle.  Children move the story along by pushing the wheel, and making puppets and objects move in unexpected ways.

“London’s Theatre-Rites celebrates self discovery and remembering what it felt like to be a child in MOJO, a physical theater performance of puppetry, live music, dance and illusion.  From “the company that has put play back into the play and produced some of our most outstanding theatre of the past decade” (The Guardian), Theatre-Rites (Mischief, New Vic 2011) takes audiences on a topsy-turvy trip full of visual transformations and revelations in this freewheeling production of physical theater. Bursting with color, energy, movement and music, MOJO features dancers, puppeteers and live musicians, including world jazz percussionist Adriano Adewale and folk/blues/jazz singer, trumpeter and guitarist Leo Altarelli.”
