This weekend is all about diversity in music: you can see and hear brass quintets, hip hop, swing and djs: take your pick!

Friday July 13th

11:00 am: Sandbox Music
Accompany live brass instrument music with your own percussion rhythms under the guidance of professional musicians from one of New York City’s premier brass quintets, Central Park Brass.

5:30 pm: Friday Family Jam Series at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum
This week it’s The Grand Falloons with comic juggling, magic, classic slapstick, and the live music of Brahms, Gus Kahn, and Irving Berlin, virtuoso concertina, saxophone, guitar and the SQUARE BUBBLE!

Saturday July 14th

10:00 am: Soundview Park Summer Festival
Third annual celebration of the waterfront with the Friends of Soundview Park. Local musicians, performers, visual artists and crafters. Special guests include Rolie Polie Guacamole, Randy Niles, Mina Greiss, Music With a Message, Garbage Men Band, and Bodoma Garifuna Culture Band.

11:00 am: Target Design Kids: Bash the Trash
Little rock stars can create their own instruments with recycled materials at this workshop and then rock out at a jam session when they’re done.

12:00 pm: Brooklyn Hip Hop Fest Family Day
Family Day is a good old fashioned, pop the sprinklers, speakers in the window block party.  Family Day is a time for parents, babies, teens and grandma to have some ‘momma’ approved fun while the kids learn about what Hip-Hop is all about.

12:00 pm: The Garbage-Men
Take inspiration from the Garbage-Men, a troupe of musically gifted kids from Sarasota, FL, who play instruments they made themselves from recycled materials. After the performance, kids have the chance to make an instrument of their own from garbage.

3:00 pm: Midsummer Night Swing Kids’ Dance 2012
Let your little dancers bust a move at this special family workshop as part of the Midsummer Night Swing. Kids and parents will learn the basics of ballroom, tango and swing led by instructor Rodney Lopez, who appeared in the critically acclaimed documentary Mad Hot Ballroom.

3:00 pm: Bargemusic Presents: “Music in Motion”
Since 1977, Bargemusic has presented chamber music in an unlikely and startlingly beautiful venue—a floating barge at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge. Both established and emerging musicians perform at Bargemusic on a small stage with the dramatic backdrop of the East River and lower Manhattan skyline.  Neighborhood Family Concerts are a one hour performance, including a Q & A session with the musicians.

5:00 pm: Hot Saturday Night Family Dance Jam

Sunday July 15th

2:00 pm: Sundae Sermon Music Festival
Spend the afternoon in Harlem for a family picnic while DJ Spinna, DJ Bobbito Garcia and DJ Stormin’ Norman play soulful house music, classics and afrobeats. When your young ones tire of dancing they can do kids yoga, get their faces painted, visit the drawing station or hoola-hoop. As a special treat, the cast of Fela! on Broadway will be the festival’s honorary host.

2:00 pm: Harlem Meer Performance Festival
Enjoy live lakeside music in the Park’s beautiful northern end at the Central Park Conservancy’s weekly Harlem Meer Performance Festival concert.  This week is Grupo Rebolú (Afro Columbian).
