Z Brothers will be at J&R Jr on Sunday

This weekend J&R Jr is having a day of kids’ music- and all of the featured acts are home-grown Brooklyn bands! Suzi Shelton, The Z Brothers and Jon Samson will perform on Sunday at various times. See below for details.  Hansel and Gretel is a classic children’s opera that is a perfect introduction to the art form- and you can catch it this weekend. The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica will be celebrating it’s 50th anniversary with West Indian dance and music.  Have a fabulous weekend!

Saturday March 24th

11:00 am: The Good Ms. Padgett Sings the Little Red Hen
Just days after the release of her second album, The Good Ms. Padgett Sings the Little Red Hen and Other Stories, the Good Ms. Padgett herself will perform her new songs in a family-friendly show at the Knitting Factory. Sing along to classic children’s stories set to music, like “The Little Red Hen” and “Goldilocks,” in a memorable performance for tots and their parents.

11:00 am: Nimbaya
Notable on the children’s festival circuit, Nimbaya is an all-women troupe whose members play the djembe, an instrument typically only used by males. Families get a taste of the group’s inspirational tale while jamming to the high-energy beats.

1:00 pm: Saturday Family Programs: Flooky and the Beans
Flooky and the Beans are back and ready to dance, dance, dance and sing, sing, sing in this fantastic Spring time concert celebrating their first trip to Brooklyn!

1:00 pm: Scandinavian Sing-Along
Kids will belt out traditional songs along with Danish musicians, dance and play musical games.

1:30 pm: Hansel and Gretel: A Children’s Opera
This operatic version of the classic fairy tale introduces the music genre to young audiences. Sung in English, the 45-minute performance features interactive elements that will regale theatergoers-in-training.

8:00 pm: National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica
The National Dance Theatre Company of Jamaica is coming to Brooklyn to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The company incorporates the dance and music of West Indian culture in a performance packed with energy.

Sunday March 25th

10:00 am: Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights
The spunky NYC-based singer will have families jamming to kindie rock tunes about popping popcorn, wearing sunglasses and blaming someone else for your mistakes.

11:00 am: Suzi Shelton at J&R Junior
Shelton, a Brooklynite and mom of two, performs catchy tunes from her latest album, Tomboy in a Princess Dress and songs from her previous solo albums Simply Suzi and No Ordinary Day. Expect sing-along choruses and lots of opportunities to move to the groove.

11:00 am: Princess Katie & Racer Steve: The Monster Concert
Break out your scariest monster costumes for Princess Katie and Racer Steve’s Monster Concert and come prepared to dance to songs from their upcoming CD Love, Cake & Monsters. Come early to see a preshow screening of a brand-new music video for their song “Sand in My Sandwich,” and stay for a high-energy rock concert of monstrous proportions!

1:00 pm: The Beauty of Ballet
The world-famous School of American Ballet brings kids a memorable introduction to the world of leotards and pink tutus. Members of the SAB will answer questions, illustrate how talented students become classical dancers and perform excerpts from The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty. Reservations required.

1:00 pm: The Z Brothers at J&R Junior
The Brooklyn-based Z Brothers (Paulie Z, David Z and Joey Cassata) invite kids to jump, shake, clap and sing along to rock & roll songs at this special concert at J&R Junior. Featuring songs in every genre from 90′s pop to classic rock, don’t be surprised to hear an N’Sync song followed by “Sweet Home Alabama.”

2:00 pm: Jazz for Kids
Introduce your kids to the joys of jazz at the Jazz Standard’s weekly Sunday brunch program. The Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra, made up of talented youngsters between the ages of 11 and 18, provides the music, while your family chows down on a barbecue brunch from Blue Smoke. Doors open at 1pm.

2:30 pm: Jon Samson at J&R Junior
Local singer-songwriter and musical therapist Jon Samson leads an interactive sing-along featuring his catchy tunes. We hope he plays the hilarious lullaby turned frenzied ditty “The Alarm Clock Is Mean,” which will surely elicit a raucous mini dance party.
