Starting Friday you can check out DanceAfrica’s performances every day through Memorial Day. It’s a fabulous way to see dancers from all over the world celebrating Africa. Tickets are half price for children under 16 years! It’s also the reopening of Governors Island this weekend- one of our favorite day trips from Brooklyn. See Astrograss and The Maybelles rock out while you picnic!

Friday May 25th

10:30 am: Singalong w/Mike Messer, Lead Singer of Dirty Sock Funtime Band @ Dean Street
Mike Messer, lead singer of the Dirty Sock Funtime Band (as seen on Nick Jr!), is leading a singalong each Friday at Dean Street.

7:30 pm: DanceAfrica 2012: Memorial Day Weekend Performances
This year marks the 35th anniversary of DanceAfrica! the nation’s first festival devoted to African dance.  It has become one of the largest celebrations of its kind—uniting dancers the world over to celebrate the cultural vitality of Africa and its diaspora.  There are different programs all weekend that will be spectacular!  Tickets are half price for kids under 16.

Saturday May 26th

12:00 pm: Governors Island Family Fun Festival
Celebrate the seasonal reopening of Governors Island with a fun-filled family extravaganza. Families from all over the city are invited to come out and enjoy the opening festivities, including music, theater, dance and arts and crafts. Talents such as Astrograss, The Maybelles and Arm of the Sea Theater will also be taking the stage to make the day a rockin’ good time. Free. All ages.

12:00 pm: 17th Annual Lower East Side Festival
Although the venerable East Village institution’s annual arts bash goes on all weekend, most of the performances are geared to adults. Saturday, however, is family day, featuring a cultural street fair jam-packed with vendors, food and entertainers on East 10th Street, as well as a cavalcade of youth performers inside the theater. All ages.

Sunday May 27th

2:00 pm: Jazz for Kids
Introduce your kids to the joys of jazz at the Jazz Standard’s weekly Sunday brunch program. The Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra, made up of talented youngsters between the ages of 11 and 18, provides the music, while your family chows down on a barbecue brunch from Blue Smoke. Doors open at 1pm.
