Pediatricians
When choosing a pediatrician, it is as much personality as it is the feel of the office, how easy it is to get to, location and hours. However, don’t forget you can always switch if you aren’t happy.
Dr. Stephen Ajl
Brooklyn Hospital Center121 DeKalb
Brooklyn, NY 11201 (Fort Greene)
Phone: (718) 250-8764
Dr. Stephen Ajl (pronounced like grocery aisle or desert isle) is a fantastic pediatrician. He is at Brooklyn Hospital on Dekalb Avenue (but sees patients one day a week in Park Slope, as well). Brooklyn Hospital is not the newest hospital (and the toys in the pediatrics waiting room could use a good scrubbing), but Dr. Ajl is a renowned expert on child abuse and works there because of the close proximity to many incidences of abuse here in Brooklyn. Dr. Ajl is a one-man operation. He fields his own calls, makes his own appointments, and does all the record-keeping himself. I have never once had to chase him down – he has always been prompt and responsive. I can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Ajl. He is no-nonsense with parents but adorable with children. He can come across as brusque, but underneath he is warm-hearted and funny and will spend all the time you need (even if it seems like he’s trying to get rid of you). At the infant stage, he won’t necessarily coo over children but as they get older and more aware, he becomes warm and playful. All this is secondary to the fact that Dr. Ajl is abreast of all the latest research, extremely knowledgeable about many childhood issues not necessarily related to traditional medicine, and knows when to prescribe medicine (and more important, when NOT to). If you want a doctor who is attuned to the needs of babies, rather than to the needs of parents, he is your pediatrician. Many doctors will prescribe a program of sleep training, which is a convenience for tired parents and not in the best interest of a baby. Dr. Ajl believes in absolutely no sleep training before 6 months, though he will work with you and try to resolve your issues in other ways, if possible. More often than not, he will tell you that your baby is doing exactly what she needs to do – sleep when she needs to sleep and wake up often to nurse – and will sympathize with you, but won’t tell you it’s OK to close the door and let your baby cry, which is what many exhausted parents want to hear. Dr. Ajl saved my breastfeeding when I was crying in pain at the latch. He is a staunch supporter of breastfeeding and will help you if you are having problems. He is also open to a modified vaccination schedule.
-JenniferWe use Dr. Ajl as well who came highly recommended to me by my OB/GYN Dr. Russell. They aren’t even affiliated with the same hospital but she felt so strongly about him she was referring all of her new mothers to him. We really like him. He’s down to earth and honest. Hedefinitely has an edge but also underneath his harder shell is a warm, funny man who LOVES babies and as mentioned in an earlier post doesn’t have a fancy practice because his heart is in helping kids in need and he’s the leading testifier in child abuse cases. He helps me keep things in perspective while being available to answer any questions. It is hard psychologically to see him at Brooklyn Hospital because the place is so depressing. We never have to wait for our appointment but when you walk in to the clinic and see the waiting room full with parents and babies who don’t have appointments and are waiting to see the first available doctor, it gets to me a bit. Aside from that, Dr. Ajl calls me back personally within hours of my call. He doesn’t have a secretary or nurse and schedules all of his own appointments and follow up. When our son was colicky he was supportive, realistic and told me to call him anytime. Now I’m being a nervous mom that my 10 month old isn’t crawling and Dr. Ajl is being equally available and understanding about that. Be prepared to ask questions and don’t be put off when he offers up alternate ways of saying some very basic mothering stuff. He thinks new moms are reading way too many parenting books and should trust instincts and their babies and him. It’s working for us. We are really pleased with him.
-JoannaWe see Dr. Stephen Ajl at the Brooklyn Hospital. I think he is wonderful. While he is not the warm and fuzzy, hold your hand kind of doctor, I find him to be exceptional. (He is very sweet, but I would say his style takes getting used to.) He always returns my calls right away, fits us in for appointments whenever we need them (he’s a one man show who answers his cell phone directly) and, most importantly has always been right about what’s wrong or not wrong with our daughter. Our whole family (uncles, grandparents, etc) have met him and all agree that he is wonderful. I will say that going to the Brooklyn Hospital for an appointment is not always the most pleasant experience- but otherwise we are very happy.

I love Dr. Santilli at Brook Island Pediatrics. The practice has a DR. in the office everyday of the week and even has a parking lot for patients. When you take your child for their first visit, you get the home phone number of every doctor and are given hours when you can call for non-emergencies, and you are told to call anytime with an emergency.

My infant son’s pediatrician–Dr. Maggie Carpenter–is located in Park Slope, two subway stops from where we live in Carroll Gardens. So, visiting her for the first time meant baby got his first subway ride at 4 days old! It was and still is worth the stroller schlepping up and down all the station stairs, as she is a terrific doctor–warm, funny, and able to see things from a medical as well as a Mom perspective.

I see Dr. Pamela Hops. First, the office itself is fantastic: it was done by a feng shui expert and it truly does feel very zen-like. They have a library in the waiting room that has books on the mind/body connection and nutrition, etc (not your typical doctor’s room fare). They do fit you in right away for established sick patients, and the office personnel are nice. I have only had to wait, at most, 10 minutes for an appointment. Dr. Hops sees quite a few Brooklyn children- especially for those parents who don’t want to vaccinate their children on the prescribed CDC schedule. Pamela is fun, light, homeopathically interested and efficient. I don’t sit around and gab with her- she moves on. When I saw her initially she did a complete workup and found I was Vitamin deficient in E. I was impressed that she checked that out. I have seen another doctor in the office and liked him very much too. In general, I think this office is more “alternative health” oriented. They are affiliated with Beth Israel.
-KarenI have heard wonderful things about Dr. Chaudhary too. There is a new doctor there too that the receptionist told me is well liked. I didn’t catch his name.

Dr. DeHovitz is our daughter’s doctor, and I love her. So far, so good! She patiently answers our questions, supports our choices, and has a great way with the wee ones. I recommend her highly. We have never had to wait more than 10 minutes in the office. They are very laid back. My experience is that they are highly responsive to phone calls and very supportive.

We go to Gabriel Pediatrics, all the docs are good but we LOVE Dr. Darcy. I think she is only there one day a week now but the times we have gone to others have all been terrific, no complaints at all from us, they call back pretty quickly, are very patient and answer all of our questions. We HIGHLY recommend them!
-JodiWe love Dr. Marina from Gabriel Pediatrics in Bay Ridge. She is great with children, and very patiently answers all my questions to reassure me even if they are so off beat. We just think she is the best, although every doctor we’ve seen at Gabriel Pediatrics is awesome. Dr. Marina is always so accommodating, friendly, soft spoken and never rushes you out of the office even if you’re the last patient in the day – making her sometimes stays way past closing time.
-ArleneProbably the sweetest woman on the planet {is Dr. Perrone}….she is a wonder with our daughter who has all of a sudden developed an irrational fear of doctors. She holds her, comforts her and when she is going to get a shot, she talks her through it telling her all the while how sorry she is and how it’s going to make her feel better later on! Not only is she sweet to my daughter, but I am a first time Mom so she is sweet to me too. When I called her every day when my daughter was first born she didn’t make me feel like I was bothering her or asking stupid questions. It is hugely important for the pediatrician to respect your thoughts and opinions as a parent and she always makes us feel welcome!

As Dr. Gilgoff likes to say, “He and our son go way back”. After our son was born 10 months ago we met Dr. G in the hospital and immediately decided he would be our new pediatrician. He truly cares and spends time with his patients while supporting and counseling the new parents. He especially is in tune with what new moms are experiencing. He always has the time and patience for our list of questions.
-The Leiman/Mackzum familyDr. Gilgoff has been our daughter’s pediatrician since shortly after he joined the LICH Pediatric Associates practice last year, and we have been very happy to have found him. I felt comfortable immediately with Dr. Gilgoff. Not only does he listen carefully and patiently to my comments and questions, but he actually seems to appreciate them. He takes all the time we need at each visit, so I’ve never felt rushed or shortchanged. I’ve found his answers thorough, his demeanor calm and open, and his perspective one that I can relate to easily. I’ve especially appreciated the way he has been cautious but not alarmist. We definitely feel our daughter is in good hands. While we always schedule our routine visits on the days Dr. Gilgoff sees patients at 185 Montague (currently, Tuesdays and Fridays), there have been a few times when we needed to see or speak to another doctor in the practice. I’ve only had experience with Drs. Turner and Messinger so far, and both have been great. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Gilgoff. He’s terrific!
-SarahWe met Dr. Gilgoff within hours of our baby’s delivery. Things hadn’t exactly gone as planned (heard that before?!). I had just been through a c-section and all the trauma and pain surrounding that. Dr. G came right in to my recovery room and made my husband and I feel so reassured. He checked our daughter thoroughly and answered all our questions with compassion and care. He really made us feel like we were in good hands and I can not tell you how important that was. He followed up the next few days and made sure our little one was healthy. He also kept checking on me and how I was feeling. He emphasized the importance of that as well. Recently, our daughter has developed multiple hemangiomas that concerned us greatly and although he is extremely well versed in this condition, he didn’t rest until we were in the best hands – an amazing specialist at NYU. We think Dr. Gilgoff is great and recommend him highly!
-NicoleHugh Gilgoff is, hands-down, the best pediatrician we’ve ever worked with, and I would suggest the best doctor I’ve ever dealt with, period. My daughter is three and a half and my son is 14 months old. They’ve been under Dr. Gilgoff’s care for the past year. Despite a booming practice and a waiting room that is often full, Dr. Gilgoff consistently offers us his full attention during appointments and creates the illusion that he has all the time in the world to discuss the kids. His bedside manner with the little ones is fantastic. I fully credit him with getting my daughter to finally acquiesce to potty-training, based entirely on a sweet little chat they had. And during my son’s recent bout with pneumonia, Dr. Gilgoff could not have been kinder or more reassuring. He stays on top of the latest research, and is not at all a drug-pusher, but rather takes a measured approach to deciding with the parent when medication or intervention is necessary. He’s been a great resource for nutrition tips and sleep counseling. He’s also great about returning phone calls, and following up sick visits with a phone call to check in. We have seen him at both the Montegue Street office and at the walk-in clinic on Amity. I recommend him without reservation. (I should also mention that once or twice, in a pinch, we’ve been seen by his colleague Dr. Turner, who seems great.)
—JaneDr. Gilgoff writes here as an expert on the blog. I chose him as our resident pediatrician because I believe he has a balanced approach to medicine, is empathetic to new parents and is an excellent, informed resource. Here is some information he wrote back when I asked him to describe his philosophy “I was offered a job by Tribeca Pediatrics as well as a few others, but I chose to practice at Long Island College Hospital so I could combine all of the crucial areas of medicine in one job. Here, we spend time seeing the newborn babies, educating both medical students and residents, caring for the inpatients admitted to the hospital, as well as growing a lovely practice on 185 Montague, between Court and Clinton. Although we are all western trained doctors, we insist on making our patients feel empowered and respected. We are all well trained at top institutions, and stay on top of the latest research and trends in medicine. We take our time with our patients and specialize in behavioral issues, breastfeeding, development, asthma, adolescents and sports medicine. We accept just about all insurances and there isn’t a long wait to see us. We offer same day sick visits all throughout the day and don’t charge for pre-natal visits. I was raised by a midwife, Alice Gilgoff, who also wrote a book called, “Home Birth”, and started Mother Nurture, a doula service in 1986. She trained many of our doulas, and childbirth educators here in Brooklyn, and it’s very nice to be part of this community. As I had been practicing for 12 years in Manhattan, I am still largely unknown here – but that can only help my patients, as I am not that busy doc who rushes his patients while they still have their list of questions in their hand!”

While there are some good doctors (Gelman was great), the practice overall is horrible. In the almost 2 years I was there, I ALWAYS waited a minimum of 45 min to 1 hr, more typically 2 hrs, even for a well visit. The doctors take a long time to return calls and were very quick to send us to the emergency room for an unnecessary visit that required us to be there overnite — all because it would have been too much effort on their part to squeeze my son in to their schedule. all in all, not worth the hassle.

We had a GREAT pediatrician there, but she moved to Boston. We now see Dr. Berg there who is also lovely. The practice has been great on the whole, we have no complaints. It’s pretty standard stuff though. No one is asking you if want immunizations or not. You just get them.
-MichelleWe see Dr. Oppenheim and feel that she takes the time to answer our questions. She is very reassuring. There have been times though that we have waited longer than we wanted. (Perhaps this is a result of Dr. Oppenheim taking his time with the patients though.) Generally, I think Dr. Oppenheim is great. The office makes it very easy to get in if you need to see someone immediately. Honestly, I am not as excited about the other doctors in the practice.
-SarahOur pediatrician is Dr Putter at Pediatric Associates & we love her!
-DierdreMy son’s pediatrician is Dr. Putter at Pediatric Associates – love her and the practice. She is friendly and answers all questions and concerns. The receptionists are helpful on the phone and in person, and I’ve never waited long in the waiting area. And when I’ve had to call outside of office hours someone always calls back quickly.

I like Dr. Price and Dr. Sarnoff. I am not a fan of Dr. Raksis’s bedside manner. The office is really efficient and on-time. The office staff is friendly.
-EricaThey respond immediately when we call. Last time I called with one of my disaster moments, Dr. Price empathized with my calamity parenting moment and told me I was doing just fine. It was really relieving. He is always straightforward and calming. Dr. Sarnoff is kind, thoughtful and engaged. Dr. Weinberger: jovial, extremely knowledgeable and interested. Dr. Raksis was cold and impatient with us on our first baby visit and hasn’t changed much in those 2 years. There is a new doctor in the office- I have seen her twice- she seems kind, but I can’t make an experienced comment yet. The office nurses are great: efficient, friendly and always get you in on-time. If you don’t want to do vaccinations, this probably isn’t the office for you.
-StaceyThis office is really efficient. They fit you in for sick visits, do the school paperwork in a timely manner and schedule appointments easily. They also run everything on computers, so records are easily obtained by everyone. The office is pleasant, the nurses always seem to be happy. Dr. Weinberger is the founder of the practice. He is avuncular, experienced and easy going. Having said that, he will not (nor will the office) allow any patients to stray from the CDC’s vaccination schedule. Dr. Price is very thorough, fun, quick-talking and no-nonsense. He is always very calming with emergency calls and questions. Dr. Gallombardpo (Dr. Julie) is incredibly enthusiastic about her job, extremely bright and capable. She is like a Pied Piper. Dr. Sarnoff is a deeply caring doctor who remembers you very well and is quite interactive with the children. You can tell he loves his job. While not as experienced as Dr. Price and Dr. Weinberger, he is still a steady and assuring presence at the practice.

We love this practice. It feels like a country doctor’s office with its relaxed and homey atmosphere. You never feel rushed. They will spend as much time as possible with you. Ptlak has more of a holistic approach. Dr. Thelander is so calm, very gentle, reassuring. She is young, but I feel like she knows what she is doing. O’Connor is super straight forward and warm. The office has spots to get you in the same day as you are sick. Wait times aren’t bad. I usually never wait for more than 10 minutes. They have a lactation consultant that meets you on your first newborn visit.

I see whichever doctor is available at Tribeca Pediatrics. I like to see a lot of different doctors and they have all been good. They are nonalarmist. Go on a Tuesday and the parking is better.
-GretchenI prefer the office in Tribeca. They give me child development tips. They are not about comfy, attachment parenting- they are hard-core “cry it out”. They are non-judgmental about it though if you don’t subscribe to that. Dr. Cohen is very funny.
-ElizabethOur first son is almost 19 months and has been going there since birth, and we have an almost 4 month old, who has been going there since he was born too. The owner, Dr Cohen, who practices in Tribeca primarily, comes over on Thursdays. I like his way of practicing, he is very involved, and will spend as much time with you as you need. He also has a very sweet, kind bed-side manner. He definitely is not for everyone, as he is very laid back, but we love him, and the way he is with our children. The other two doctors in the practice are wonderful, kind and compassionate too, and our children see them too.The office in Williamsburg is brand new, with a great children’s play area.
-LucieOur pediatrician Maryann Tholany of Tribeca Pediatrics in Boerum Hill is the kindest, nicest Doctor I have ever met in any of the fields of medicine. I think she is totally suited to her profession because she is so kind and gentle with the children and the worn out parents which meant a lot to me when I was sleep deprived and swimming with hormones. She was also a life saver when one of my 4 week old twins nearly died last year from RSV. I can’t say enough nice things about her.

Thanks Michael. Did Dr. Maggie Carpenter move out of Brooklyn? Great to hear another wonderful review of Dr. Ajl.
Just a heads-up that Dr. Maggie Carpenter is no longer practicing in Park Slope.
I’m pleased to see Dr. Ajl at the top of the list here. We’ve been with him for almost 10 years through 2 kids and we dote on him. As noted, his style may not be to everyone’s taste, but he has been the perfect pediatrician for us — with the caveat, thank God, that we have generally healthy kids and have not had any major emergencies or chronic conditions to deal with that required intensive treatment or frequent appointments.

Does anybody have a great pediatrician that takes HIP? Not Dr. Stephen Ajl. Although many people seem to love him, we had a very bad experience with him. He lied to us which is not a good way to start a relationship. So many people have recommended tribeca pediatrics, but they don’t take HIP.
