***All licensed movers in New York State carry cargo insurance that will cover your belongings in transit, but the state doesn’t allow movers to offer full value or replacement value coverage; rather, clients can purchase that sort of coverage from third party insurers. This is to avoid conflicts of interest in the event of damage (if your mover is the person insuring your belongings, they have every reason to deny responsibility for breakage).

Brooklyn, NY 11231
(866) 684-8983

This moving company operates out of Red Hook, Brooklyn. About 60% of A+M Moving Service’s moves originate in the neighborhoods of Northwestern Brooklyn (also known as South Brooklyn, for what its worth). The company offers a variety of family friendly moving services—packing, moving, storage, unpacking, and organizing—and is actively taking steps to reduce the carbon footprint of every move. A+M Moving Service is currently working with one of the NRDC’s green business advisors and has pledged $2,000 in 2009 to NRDC’s programs to offset carbon emissions caused by moving. All of their new trucks will run on B20 biodiesel. A+M Moving Service will also donate 5% of any move to a public school designated by clients, so long as that school can accept funds via nycharities.org.

This moving company is a growing favorite in Brooklyn, with a great reputation for excellent service and pricing. Movers Not Shakers powers its trucks with B20 biodiesel fuel, and gives $200 a month to the Prospect Park Conservancy to offset their carbon emissions. A couple of years ago, MNS introduced what they call Gotham Boxes—sturdy reusable plastic bins that clients can rent for use during their move and return afterward.

This company has been around a long time, and are frequently mentioned as good, solid movers in the industry. From their website: “VAN GOGH MOVERS is a small family owned business that has been in existence since 1967. The owners are involved daily with all facets of the business. The company prides itself on quality service. VAN GOGH MOVERS does very little advertising due to its large base of repeat and referred customers. Our jobs range from the single piece of furniture to packing and moving complete households, as well as commercial office moves.”
Flat Rate Moving and Storage
466 Broome Street
New York, NY 10013
212.988.9292
www.flatrate.com
Flat Rate is the leader in NYC moving. It’s been around since the early 1990s, and it’s service is rumored to be spectacular. Flat rates are a fairly recent development in moving, and for obvious reasons they’re extremely popular with customers. Flat rate reputedly has impeccable customer service. Some of their trucks run on biodiesel, but it’s a small minority. Their prices are competitive, and they offer a service for every budget, from white glove elite service (special black trucks, and the movers actually do wear white gloves), to small apartment moves. All of Flat Rate’s moves originate from their lot in the Bronx. While the difference in driving distance to and from a job may seem miniscule, moving trucks frequently get only 4 to 7 miles per gallon. Cumulatively, that’s a lot of fuel waste, especially if there’s heavy traffic on the BQE going back and forth.
Excellent Quality Movers
106 Ferris Street
Brooklyn, NY 11231
718-243-2217
www.qualitymove.org
[email protected]
EQ Movers are located by the Key Lime Pies in Red Hook, and Valentino Park. They have excellent prices on moving materials (other moving companies purchase from them in a pinch), and do a lot of work in Brooklyn. This is the kind of moving company for which you’d find an equal number of good and bad reviews. They have pretty low prices (they offer hourly rates), and newer trucks. They have no stated environmental goals, and they haven’t adopted any leadership positions in transportation, but they’re certainly worth considering if price is your number one consideration.
All Star Moving and Storage
424 Park Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11205
(718) 643-4705
www.allstarnewyork.com
This is another solid, reliable, longstanding moving company in Brooklyn. All Star does the majority of its work in the neighborhoods of South Brooklyn, and they’re always around, easy to reach, and have good reviews in a number of places.
Dumbo Moving + Storage
68 Jay Street
Brooklyn, NY 11201
(212) 222-7877
www.dumbomove.com
[email protected]
The movers at Dumbo Moving aree friendly, personable, easy going, good movers who defy everyone’s expectations about who’s a mover. A lot of the movers who work in smaller (Brooklyn-based) companies are creative types, and Dumbo Moving and Storage seems to have cornered the market on finding uncomplaining sculptors and musicians to carry furniture.
