New Bilingual School Opening (with After School Only Option Too)

One World

A new bilingual school with global ambitions is opening in Brooklyn this fall. One World Project is offering both preschool and after school options with Spanish/English curricula. The school is showcasing their teachers, debut location and philosophy at an open house next month.

The preschool for 2.6 to 4.8 year olds is “play-based learning that focuses on global awareness and sustainability.”  The after school program for 5-7 year olds is all taught in Spanish and includes soccer, photography, theater, art, and cooking.  Pick up for the program is available from PS 154, PS 295, and PS 10. (If you are looking for other after school options, check all our listings here.)

Preschool options include half-day (1 pm), full day (3 pm) and extended day (5 pm). The days’ schedule consists of everything from arts and crafts, building, gardening to playing drums. They go outside every day.

One World was founded by Joanne Derwin, a mother of two bilingual children and an experienced nonprofit manager, educator, and social justice advocate. One World actually was borne out of a 2 morning a week Spanish language playgroup from January of 2012 to June 2012. Joanne and a fellow teacher loved putting it together and running it so much, so they decided to make it official with One World.

According to her bio on the school site, before initiating One World, Joanne worked at the Ford Foundation and helped manage three grantmaking initiatives with a combined annual budget of $12 million. She also worked in other organizations whose mission was to build a stronger, greener city. Joanne spent two years working as an English teacher. She is a graduate in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder and holds a Masters in Public Policy from Georgetown University.

“The school’s Lead Spanish Teacher Monica Paillet Zurdo brings over a decade of early childhood teaching experience to One World including her pioneering play-based language acquisition curriculum. Monica has a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education both from the University of Valladolid as well as extensive training in Intercultural Education.”

One World Project is a nonprofit education center based in Windsor Terrace and is currently enrolling students for the 2012/2013 school year. The school will open on September 6.
