A BPSA group from their website

I was a brownie growing up but dropped out of the girl scouts sometime around 9 years old; it didn’t seem all that much fun after awhile. The boy scouts were doing thrilling activities like winter camping and tracking scat, while we girl scouts were acquiring skills like sewing and macramé that seemed to keep us indoors most of the time.

Wish I were 9 years old again, living in Brooklyn in 2012!

Brooklyn boys and girls can be scouts together through a new group called the  5th Brooklyn Scouts, an entity that is a charter of The Baden-Powell Service Association (BPSA).

No, it’s not the BSA (Boy Scouts of America) or the GSA (Girl Scouts of America.)

“BPSA was formed in the US in 2006 as an independent and traditional-style Scouting Association.” It’s based on the philosophy of Robert Baden-Powell laid down in 1907 which promoted good citizenship and wholesome physical, mental and spiritual development; and training in habits of observation, discipline, self-reliance, loyalty, and useful skills.

The video below gives you a good idea of what BPSA is about.

If your kid joins, prepare to get them some nice winter wear: scouting is an outdoor movement and that means getting outside as much as one can.

The 5th Brooklyn Scouts will be hosting its first Open House for all interested parents and children. The event will be at the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Cultures from 6-8 pm on January 9th. They will have activities for the kids and more information about their organization and answer any questions. They will also be able to register you or your child.

The 5th Brooklyn Scouts Group OPEN HOUSE:
Wednesday, January 9, 2012
6:00-8:00 pm
Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture
53 PPW between 1st and 2nd Streets, Brooklyn.

For questions, contact Todd Schweikert (Group Scoutmaster) at GroupScoutmaster@5thBrooklynScouts.org

The 5th Brooklyn Scouts is a charter of the BPSA and is not affiliated with BSA or GSUSA. We practice a traditional, back-to-basics, co-ed approach to scouting and we are inclusive of everyone regardless of race, gender, and sexual orientation, either of child or parent.

Otters (ages 5-7)
Timberwolves (ages 8-10)
