I go in there from work for a break and something delicious. I spend my morning thinking about what I am going to get there. The cupcakes are amazing and the slices of cake are big and excellent.

This bakery specializes in sugar free, gluten free, wheat free and vegan goods. Most goods are sweetened with agave nectar (often a safe alternative for diabetics). Delivery to NYC. Great things from cupcakes, to cookie sandwiches, to, of course! birthday cakes. You can get a shipping quote from them too.

My recommendation, if you get a cake from there, is to ask them to be sure to make it the day of, and DO NOT refrigerate it in advance of serving it. It was pretty dense and dry after we refrigerated the one we got for my diabetic dad’s birthday last year. Their frosting is pretty darn good, though — rich and creamy without being cloyingly sweet. New York Mag named their cupcakes the best in the city last year. Anyway, enjoy!

This organic ice cream is some of the best I have ever tasted. Smooth, rich and creamy tasting without being too thick.  I have given gift certificates from here for birthday presents and the kids love getting them. They have also started storytime at their Atlantic Ave location. Their Prospect Heights location is in the front of NY City Explorers- a great playspace. So, you can make a day of it. For ice cream for a birthday party, it is a very expensive indulgence.  I think to go for the stuff in the grocery store is more economical.

Believe it or not, the Costco cakes are really delicious! (and inexpensive). An entire sheet cake for 40 people was $22.00. Everyone remarked on how great the cake was for Papa Tree’s 40th Birthday. We got a carrot cake (no nuts)- and I have to say, it was pretty darn good.  You have to go to the store at least 24 hours in advance and put in your order in person. This is a drag, but, hey, you can also pick up paper plates and cutlery too. The decorations are really limited- balloons, rainbows, graduation gowns, footballs, etc. and not particularly well done at that.

She’s phenomenal. She’s done my son’s first 2 birthday cakes (Percy and subway car trains, and decorated present cake) and a cake for our breakfast 2 years ago.  I’m not going to lie and say they are healthy, low sugar options. It’s full on sweet!  The cakes are not only decorated and designed phenomenally but the flavor and taste of the cakes is also amazing.

Villabate Pasticceria and Bakery, a Brooklyn based pastry shop using authentic old world Sicilian family recipes and techniques for cakes …

I was skeptical when my husband told me that he ordered a birthday cake for our two-year-old’s party from Villabate, a bustling and beautiful patisserie in Brooklyn. I thought the pastry would be too rich and sophisticated for kids. I was inclined to order from familiar bakeries in Red Hook or Cobble Hill. But, I have to say …my husband scored big time! The cake was a hit with the adults and the kids. It was angel food with chocolate icing topped with strawberries and blueberries. It was an incredible deal at $40. That included the decorating with writing and little balloons on top. The two other bakeries that I called quoted me prices ranging from $80 to $150 for a comparable cake. Villabate’s cake was moist, authentic and really pretty. So if you want to travel outside your comfort zone, have a cultural experience and get a great cake at a great deal – go to Villabate in Bensonhurst. Ciao!
