I developed what I believed to be the flu on Friday night. I tried to rest (didn’t happen with my 4 year old and 8 month old) but kept getting worse. By Sunday morning I had had it and went off to the urgent care center at the old Victory Memorial Hospital in Bay Ridge that is now SUNY Downstate. I knew there wouldn’t be any wait. Turned out I was right to go in: I had good ol’ strep and after a few days of an antibiotic, I am feeling much better.
I wanted to review this place because the nurses told me how SUNY Downstate will probably be doing away with the overnight hours because nobody knows about the facility. As a result, it is always empty (great for patients, but not great for the hospital’s revenue). I want to get the word out about how great this place is. It’s an invaluable resource to know about as an alternative to the emergency room- especially with a sick child.
The 24/7 facility is staffed by one doctor, two nurses and a nurse technician and has 17 acute-area beds, an isolation room, a gynecological room, an orthopedic room, a designated asthma area, a designated area for patients saying they are acute, and a fast track stitch-them-up area.
Patients of all ages are accepted, as are most insurance plans, and free flu shots are available.
