Erica Lyon at Realbirth ©New York Family

I was totally surprised by the news I heard today that Realbirth, a respected New York resource for pregnancy, childbirth preparation and drop-in supportive activities, is closing. In the last year, they had paired with Tribeca Pediatrics in Williamsburg and Park Slope to bring their classes to Brooklyn.

I tried to call Realbirth multiple times today to find out the entire story, but no one ever answered their lines. I did manage to get information from Tribeca Pediatrics though.  They said that Realbirth is slowly closing their doors and their last classes will run through June 30, 2010.  A new entity will be forming called “Tribeca Parenting”.  Tribeca Parenting will have the same kind of education programs as Realbirth and most of the teachers from RealBirth will be moving to the new business- and that will hopefully include the owner of Realbirth, Erica Lyon (as a teacher).  The new contact for Tribeca Parenting is emily@tribecaparenting.com (Emily is from Realbirth). Realbirth’s childbirth classes and inexpensive breastfeeding clinics will be especially missed. However, there are still plenty to choose from in Brooklyn. Check our listings for childbirth prepartion here and our listings for breastfeeding support here.

  1. I just wanted to post that my husband and I just had an excellent birth class at TriBeCa Parenting. Our teacher, Jeremi, was one of the former Realbirth teachers and she was so knowledgable. We plan to take the baby care class as well. Hope others find this helpful!

  2. HI Emily
Thanks so much for sending the information on to us. Glad to know that your classes will be held in those beautiful spaces. Please let us know your schedule as soon as you put it together.

  3. Hello,
My name is Emily Cohen, Manager of Education at the new Tribeca Parenting. While related to Tribeca Pediatrics, Tribeca Parenting is a separate entity. We will, however, be benefiting from the Tribeca Pediatrics partnership by holding classes in Tribeca Pediatrics’ offices (including Williamsburg and Park Slope), as Realbirth was doing previously. We will be offering excellent Preparation for Childbirth classes (many of which will be taught by former Realbirth teachers) and Breastfeeding Clinics in a number of Tribeca Pediatrics locations, among other valuable offerings. While we cannot guarantee teachers’ participation, we are definitely hoping to have as many amazing pregnancy and parenting teachers join Tribeca Parenting as possible. If you have any other questions about our programs, teachers, etc., please feel free to e-mail me at emily@tribecaparenting.com.
    Thank you,
    Emily Cohen

  4. I suspect that Tribeca Pediatrics is the major force behind the new entity as I got all the information about Tribeca Parenting from them- including who to contact and that they were hoping that Erica Lyons would come over to TParenting as a teacher.

  5. Does the name suggest that they were acquired by Tribeca Pediatrics, do you think? Will the new entity be giving classes at TP’s offices the way they planned to host RealBirth classes? Hm. Interesting tidbit!
