Consumer Reports Guide reported on the 2 major crib recalls that were announced minutes ago: Two major crib recalls were announced today including one that involved the death of a one-year-old Massachusetts boy, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced.

All full-size Simplicity cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames are being recalled because the frames can bend or break away from the crib sides. The death of the baby occurred when he became trapped between the mattress and the frame and suffocated. Thirteen other children have become entrapped or injured in the cribs.

The recall is being made by the retailers that sold the cribs including Walmart, Target, Babies ‘R’ Us and several other retailers nationwide. The model numbers to look for are: 8755, 8324, 4600, 8740, 8994, 8676 and 8910. (Some may have an additional letter that indicates color.) The CPSC today renewed its call to parents to remove Simplicity cribs from their homes and warned: “Do not attempt to fix these cribs.”

The second recall is of 217,000 Graco-branded drop-side cribs made by LaJobi. The hazard is that the hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib. The CPSC has gotten 99 reports of this happening including some in which children became entrapped. There were six reports of children falling when a drop-side detached including one report of a mild concussion.

The Graco recall involves nine styles of cribs; see the recall notice for all the model numbers. The cribs were sold at children’s product stores and other retailers nationwide from February 2007 to March 2010 for between $140 and $200.

  1. Ditto. Our crib held more laundry than babies.

  2. Omg. Well, guess I don’t feel bad anymore about the fact that our 3 yr old has spent 90% of her nights sleeping with mommy and daddy instead of her crib.
