Last week we finally visited Frolic!, the new children’s play space in Williamsburg but the reviews we have heard were right on: it is the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll play space.
Located at The Edge’s brand new luxury waterfront property, Frolic! is a 5,00o square foot space that features an indoor play area, private party rooms and class rooms. The vibe throughout can best be described as psychedelic rock meets ultra-modern style. With elements like the interactive 1970 Volkswagen bus recreated by Roto (the award-winning children’s museum designers), a concert-stage with “back stage” area to crawl around, magic mushrooms and super-sized butterflies, kids can play at being inside a magical world.
Frolic! is the brainchild of duo Carey Balogh and Julia Dawson, two moms and fellow (former) fashion industry pros from the Williamsburg area who have used their knowledge of art and fashion and combined it with their love of rock ‘n’ roll to take the notion of “play space” to a whole new level.
Music is an obvious inspiration throughout the space in design, sound and art. The space is full of musical instruments and memorabilia from Balogh’s husband’s years of touring and producing concerts for bands incuding the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath and John Mayer. The Rolling Stones are referenced by the outrageously fun tongue slide that offers dual sliders a slippery run. An interactive video wall installation, called Creature Symphony, is a mesmerizing piece where kids make music by playing the “virtual” characters.
Music is also a large part of their class offerings: singer/songwriter Tim Kubart of the Space Cadets offers a very popular music class program featuring his three piece band, Audrarox teaches her ever-expanding music program and private music lessons in piano, guitar and drums are available so you don’t have to own a full drum set! Does your kid want to know the history of rock and roll? Try Rock History 101.
The expansive class offerings take place in 3 classrooms and include Super Soccer Stars, Kick + Play, Baby Clay and Rock History 101 by Frolic!, Bilingual Birdies for Spanish and French, City Kids Dance, AudraRox Musical Theater, Ballet Babes, Pint Size Painters and more.
Since many of the classes are drop-off, adults can sip organic coffee and chat with other parents in the private coffee lounge or browse the rock ‘n’ roll boutique area for instruments, gifts and apparel.
Frolic! offers perks for members: only they have access to the playground, Creature Symphony and story time, but the classes, birthday parties and café area are available to non-members too. Their birthday party themes and packages offer what else? A rock star theme among many others. They offer a Classic Frolic! Preview Pass card for non-members to try out the space (3 days of play and 1 Little Rock-its music class for $125 which would be applied towards annual membership): http://www.frolicplayspace.com/membership.html and classes are open to absolutely everyone (members just get extra 10% off).
