The Beehive Salon

Hair Salon

They always have lollies, cookies and other treats for kiddies in the waiting area. “Weekends are a bit busy so kids won’t be able to spread out their coloring books as easily as they can during the weekdays. We have moms and dads requesting all sorts of hip do’s and our stylists can accomodate. We’ve overheard “can you cuy my son’s hair to look like Beck?” Can you color a strand Barney Purple? We can add colorful extensions for fun. We also do teen facials at our spa which is located around the corner from the salon. They are $55 and we have great Dermalogica products for kids with teenage acne.” $25 for children’s haircut.

Birch and I entered the Beehive Salon in Williamsburg where all the other clients were adults hanging, either with funky colored weaves or just sharp haircuts. However, Birch got all the attention from both the clients and the shop. Andrea, who specializes in working with children, escorted Birch to her station and swept a Harry Potter cape on top of him. She seated him on a booster seat and calmly showed him her “tools”. Then she was at it, quietly snipping. He squirmed and cried for me as he wasn’t too sure of a new person cutting his hair so Andrea kindly let me hold him in my lap while she cut his hair with his head buried in my chest. She was obviously used to dealing with this. Somehow she managed to still cut his hair with confidence. Eventually, Birch got comfortable and turned and looked in the mirror and actually smiled! Afterwards, he wanted to sweep up the hair with the salon broom (he has a fondness for sweeping)- and Andrea and Birch swept the entire shop. He had a blast. It was a real outing and I didn’t need to buy a toy or distract him with some other kind of media. There was so much to see on the walls of the salon that that was interesting and unique (see top photo). The Beehive isn’t a “kids salon” per se but certainly is kids’ friendly for little ones and is a cool place for kids who want weaves, quirky East Village cuts and a “vibe.” The parking was easy. $25 for a kids’ haircut. Their website has a price list for other services.

UPDATE: We have been to Beehive three times now for haircuts and love it. All the cutters are so nice and play with Birch. We liked Trisha, Andrea and Lisa. They are all good. They do the cut just as you ask them, or can be creative with their own ideas. We go in for family haircuts- husband, myself and 2 children. It makes it really convenient- they seat us together and help entertain our children after they are done and I am still getting blown dry.

Brooklyn General Barber Emporium
144 Bedford Ave at North 9th St,
Williamsburg
718-486-3777
Subway: L to Bedford Ave.
An old-fashioned barber and an airplane chair in a retro environment await kids here. Once the snipping is finished, they can pick a handful of classic candies and kitschy toys from the jars lining the walls.
Hours: M,T,W 10-8 pm Thurs-Sun 12-8pm.

This is a pint-sized barber shop with a lot of character.  There is a lively parrot over the desk area that provides entertainment, along with Tamir, the main haircutter.  There is a lot to look at with the old-fashioned toys (not wooden, but the cheap plastic kind from the 1960′), kitschy props, and cool glossy striping on the walls.  For the kids, there is a retro airplane on a hydraulic pump that swings around. Kids can pedal to get the propeller spinning and Tamir spins them around between snipping. The haircut for our son was very good. My husband’s haircut was good as well.

-I was going to write a great review about this place – but we just had a horrible experience. The first time we went we were initially a bit confused because both people working ignored us when we entered… anyhow, Tamir does the kids’ cuts so you sign your name at the next spot on his clipboard. The first time we took j, he was about 16 months and squirmy / scared. Tamir took time to show him how the clippers worked, blew bubbles and made sure he was comfortable before he started cutting. Ae gave him a GREAT 50′s style cut. We left very happy and felt like he took time to work with j. HOWEVER, we just went back and put j in the chair and he freaked out (he is almost two) Tamir said j. was not ready and went back to playing on his computer.  He gave us no direction on how to make j comfortable or what his plan was (what needed to happen so that he would be willing to cut his hair – just said ‘he’s not ready’) so, another customer came in and Tamir took him while we tried to make j comfortable… but Tamir didn’t even ask if he could take the next guy (the place is first come first serve). Then, after he finished with that guy, he took another without asking us. so, after he was done with that guy, we told him that we thought j was ready to try at that point (j was happily playing in the chair). Tamir responded that he was going to cut a THIRD man’s hair first even though we had been there at least an hour. When I protested, he didn’t even respond… and just kind of said ‘that’s the way it is’ and wouldn’t even look at us. all in all, we were there for well over an hour and were virtually ignored the entire time. It was very clear that he’d rather do the adult cuts so he could make their money rather than cut a kid’s hair which would take more time… but communicated none of this to us and clearly was not interested in our business. So, despite the good experience we had the first visit, I wouldn’t recommend this guy!

Based on a great recent experience with her cutting my very reluctant toddler’s hair in our home, I wanted to recommend , a recent returnee to NYC from Australia, who can come to your home to do children’s cuts as well as adult cuts and coloring. She specializes as a colorist, but did a really tremendous job with cutting my son’s hair, and her rates are excellent.

Lucas Radcliffe

Lucas Radcliffe, a Brooklyn dad and former Soho hairstylist cuts adult and kids’ hair. Lucas cuts hair either at his place in Williamsburg, or at your home.

I had Lucas come cut my hair after months of neglect, and was very happy with the results.  He really took his time, was personable and easy to talk to, and gave me an easy-to-care for look that I like. It’s growing out wonderfully, which is always my true test of a good cut :) .  He also cut both my boys’ hair, and despite short attention spans and wiggles, they look great.  You really can’t beat 3 cuts for $50 (the kids were free) in your own home!  I’ll be calling him again.
-Bethany

I really liked the haircut I got from Lucas, lots of layers and he thinned my big hair well! I am very happy with it. I gave him some freedom with the haircut “look” and I am glad I did since he seemed to know just how to do it. My son’s haircut wasn’t my favorite as it was too long in the sideburns and in the back which I ended up cutting myself. But, I think that was really due to my son squirming the whole time and Lucas had to cut his hair with him in my lap. I will definitely have Lucas cut my hair again and try my son again too- I’ll update you on the next time.

Michaella Williams
718.623.6153
Clinton Hill

I recently got my haircut by Michaella Williams at her salon, Salon 718. It’s a really cute space, basement of a brownstone. She is a Clinton Hill mom and takes clients by appt only. She caters to moms by offering later hours if need be. I brought my 8 month old with me and she didn’t mind at all – so if your child is still somewhat content in the stroller this is an option as there is no space to play. She’s been in the industry for over 15 years, does all types of cuts, coloring, and treatments…and charges a decent price!
