Prior to her career as a documentary filmmaker, Margaret worked for a number of years in legal defense and community development. She assisted immigrants from various regions, including Latin America, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.  In 2003, Margaret turned her attention to documentary filmmaking. She earned her Masters in Art for Social Change, focusing in documentary film at the Gallatin School of Individual Study at NYU. In May of 2007, she received a Graduate Documentary Certificate from the New School, and completed her first two short documentary films: Krumbs and Salsa Salon.
