“Spotted!”, our biweekly photo look at a family by Justine Cooper  , features families that personify a unique look in both who they are and how they live. If you are interested in being photographed for this segment, please email us.

From Justine:
Romanian native and Brooklyn resident Meda Bittermann and her pre-K daughter Petra initially caught my attention with those matching tresses!  They pull off an eclectic style in a lovely, layered way. We arranged a play date at their place. Naturally everything in their home smells good, sounds good, tastes good (thanks for the tart!) and of course looks great.  The only plastic I saw in the house was a hungry hippos game.

Meda’s background spans fashion, graphic design and jewelry. Their home is filled with color and the mini-collections of beautiful objects she finds or creates. Petra, following in mom’s footsteps, is learning to draw and design on the computer as well. I asked Meda how she chooses what she wears and the objects that surround her. The answer is that they choose her, the attraction is overwhelming.

So about the hair, Petra was born with hair and its never been cut. “We believe girls need their long mane” says Meda. “Hair represents natural life and its correspondence with one’s spiritual life. So the longer it is, the better the connection.”

New birthday boots (Meda’s). Apparently Petra loves the look of heels too, and has been parading around in Meda’s since she was 2. My poor daughter will have to settle for Danskos at best. Another personal tradition is to keep a Christmas tree up until their birthdays in February. And Meda’s favorite color is green anyway…

Petra dancing in the bedroom in front of an array of gold-leafed icons. “So does everyone immediately recognize you as mother and daughter,” I asked?

“We come from a long line of powerful females, both maternal & paternal sides -and funny enough, Petra looks so similar to her great-grandmothers!”

Meda and her husband Doru’s big project at the moment is setting up a retreat in New Mexico near Santa Fe called the Tewa Institute . Next play date can be there please!
