Caribou Baby in Greenpoint can really stock their calendar with solid events and I thought I would give a shout out to some of their upcoming ones.

One of my all-time favorite class teachers, Ellynne Skove of GoGo Babies, will be teaching a Baby Massage Workshop this weekend. I would go just to have her do a little massage on me- but, alas, it’s only for babies!

Ellynne’s GoGo Babies class is so special that she has the most reviews of any class provider on our Marketplace and her classes sold out at Caribou last semester. I see her personally for polarity work- and my mother makes a point of seeing Ellynne when she flies in for a visit. But, since her current workshop is only for babies, I’ll have to schedule my own appointment!

The Baby Massage Workshop, taught by Ellynne, is for babies 6 weeks to pre-rolling & their parents. This workshop is great for fathers to learn ways to be with baby and engage in meaningful activities as well as new mothers. Grandparents are welcome too! This workshop will teach you everything from techniques to soothe and calm baby to creating useful sleep rituals using massage. Tickets will be available in store only for $45/family. Note that these tickets are non-refundable except in case of emergency or baby illness. All refunds will be left to the discretion of Caribou Baby.
Details: Sunday, February 12th 3-5PM at Caribou Baby

**************

One thing I do know after having taking Baby Be Safe‘s infant CPR class, I knew how to administer the Heimlich on my toddler. I will never forget that day when I banged on her back to relieve her of the gooey, glazed strawberry that she was choking on. I will always be thankful that I took that class 6 years ago.

Baby Be Safe is teaching Infant CPR and First-Aid Training at Caribou Baby this Saturday. This class is intended for Moms, Dads, nannies, or anybody else who watches your baby or cares for your family. You will learn the skills for prevention, recognition, and treatment for choking (Heimlich), respiratory, and cardiac emergencies (CPR) for infants and children. There will also be hands on practice using infant and children mannequins. Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to either learn for the first time or to brush up on your infant CPR and first aid skills. The class runs for 2.5-4 hours and costs $85-$120 per person depending on whether or not a student is seeking a 2-yr certification in CPR with AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and Pediatric First Aid. Each student will receive a packet and book with the training. Infants can attend with Mom and Dad. Space is limited.
Details: Saturday, February 11th at 12:30PM at Caribou Baby. $85 pp for Infant Child and Adult CPR and First Aid training only (without certification) (2.5 hours; 12:30-3:00pm) + $15 for 2-yr CPR with AED certification (you must stay an extra 15 minutes to take the test – until 3:15pm) (Total Cost is $100) + $20 for certification in Pediatric First-Aid (you must stay an extra 1-1.5 hours – until 4:00-4:30pm) (Total Cost is $120)

If you are wondering what a doula does or if you already know and want to find one, you might consider checking out Caribou Baby’s Eat, Drink, DOULA with BirthFocus next weekend.

Eat, Drink, DOULA with BirthFocus will be an open house, where the BirthFocus doulas will give pregnant women, and their partners, a chance to learn more about their doula practice and to connect intimately with several doulas through one on one interviews. They lovingly refer to these events as “speed dating for doulas” as each expecting couple will have a chance to meet with 4-5 doulas, of varying experience levels, throughout the event. Please register for the open house below. Click here for more information.
Imagine this: a full night’s good sleep for you and your partner…. and upon waking, you find you have a cheery baby who has also had a good night’s sleep! Not that she is making any promises, but Dr. Janet Kennedy (aka the NYC Sleep Doctor), will give you the steps on making that a real possibility during her new workshops at Tribeca Parenting.

If you start early with helping your baby grow into a good sleeper, you may avoid the struggle of sleep training later on. When our youngest, Willow, was 5 months, I got mono and needed major sleep. Willow was doing that “baby thing” of waking up from her naps after 45 minutes and though she was exhausted, she couldn’t get back to sleep. I would rock her in the glider before trying to transfer her to the co-sleeper and then wahhh! she woke up the moment I tried to put her down. I ended up just sleeping with her in the glider for days on end. I called the NYC Sleep Doctor to help dig us out of the sleeping abyss we had fallen into.

Dr. Kennedy taught me methods to help Willow soothe herself back to sleep. We learned everything from recognizing her favorite sleep positions and sleepy signs to establishing a good schedule to get some control over our sleep patterns. It helped tremendously and when Willow eventually learned ways to get herself back to sleep, I made my own way back to recovery.

Here is the scoop on the 2 hours clinics that will be taught at Tribeca Parenting locations in Park Slope, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Tribeca and the Upper East Side. The one in Fort Greene starts this Tuesday (January 24th).

How to Raise a Good Sleeper:

by Dr. Hugh Gilgoff

Who’s Allowed Near the Baby?

The birth of your baby is a time of utter joy and celebration. Friends, family, and even complete strangers on the street want to see and even touch your beautiful little one. The problem is that your baby does not yet have a developed immune system. Even if you breastfeed your baby and pass some of your immunity on, there are a plethora of illnesses that are just too easy to catch.

Germs are spread either by touch or by respiratory droplets. With this recent H1N1 swine flu epidemic, we are all aware of the need to wash hands thoroughly and frequently. But even if you have clean hands, you can still spread a virus or bacteria by coughing, sneezing or even breathing on a baby.

You will hear slightly different advice from different doctors (and different grandmas), but I think the happy medium would include having a high threshold for visitors during the first 2 to 3 months. If you have adult family or close friends who want to visit, take a quick medical history first. Are they sick, or even starting to feel sick? Do they have a family member, especially a child at home who is now sick? If an adult is definitely healthy, and promises to wash their hands often and not necessarily kiss the baby near the mouth, then it is “okay” in my book to have them visit.

I really would not want any little ones near your newborn. Toddlers are rarely without a runny nose. They are also notoriously putting their hands in their mouth or noses, so hand washing becomes “a wash” itself after a minute! Now if there is another baby who comes, that is okay – because they won’t touch your baby. As for those older kids, perhaps 7 or 8 years old, they can usually be trusted to wash their hands and look at the baby, but not necessarily handle him or her.

Now some of you are saying, “C’mon Dr. G – you sound a bit over-protective. You know everyone wants to see my new baby now!” So let me explain where I am coming from. First of all, it is just not worth seeing your newborn catch even a little cold if you can avoid it. They won’t eat well, and often gag or even throw up when they are congested. They will sleep even worse and cry even more, and they can suffer for 3-7 days from even a common cold.

Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, your newborn will have very little clinical or behavioral cues to allow us doctors to NOT worry when they are sick. Whereas an older child is more like an adult – and can verbalize and localize their pains – a newborn is going to just act very irritable and even lethargic. On top of that, they respond with a fever quite easily, and any fever in a newborn is an emergency until proven otherwise.

What if a Baby Gets a Fever?

Each and every pediatrician will treat the newborn with a fever (or even one without a fever, but with lethargy or other signs of serious illness) the same way. We must assume the worst, and search for signs of infection, especially dangerous bacteria, in the blood, urine and even spinal fluid. Then we must actually admit the baby into the hospital for 2 to 3 days and administer antibiotics through an IV until the cultures prove whether there is a bacterial infection or not.

The reason for doctors being so aggressive in our approach to newborns who are sick is in the statistics. Babies who have high fevers can get sick very quickly. Whereas, with an adult with a serious infection, you often have many days to catch and treat an illness. There have been too many cases (and I have unfortunately seen this) where a baby is critically ill, or even dead in hours as a result of an overwhelming bacterial infection.

So, while the vast majority of fevers are going to be viral colds in origin, and the majority of colds are actually going to pass in a few days even in a newborn, it just isn’t a good thing to have your little one catch a fever. If you are concerned, measure your baby’s temperature using the most accurate method – rectally. You don’t have to check it daily, or really ever – but check it any time they feel warm or are acting sick. Any fever over 100.4, (or 38.0 Celsius) is an immediate trip to emergency room. Call us while you are on the way or when you are there so we can help. Certainly, don’t give Tylenol and wait until the morning.

After two to three months of age things start to change, and we don’t have to be as aggressive. At that point, the immune system is improving and hopefully the first vaccines are on board. Perhaps more importantly, there are now clinical cues that appear in the baby such as: how interactive they are, how well they are eating, smiling, sleeping, and even playing.

Can I Take my Baby Outside?

In the old days, the above concerns sometimes led to parents waiting inside for a month or two with their newborn. After all, since there are indeed tons of germs outside, that might seem a valid option. But I think, once again, we need to balance fear with reality (and mom’s sanity) and find that middle road.

Although there are germs and sick people outside, the only way your newborn is going to catch those germs is if people cough on or touch your baby. So as long as you are quick with a stiff arm and strong glance (or loud shout, perhaps even with a bull horn), you should be okay taking your baby for a quick walk after a few days of life. Indeed, we want to see all newborns for a full physical exam on day 3, 4 or 5 at the doctor’s office, so all babies will come out at least once that first week. But, it also should be okay to take a quick walk (weather permitting) down the promenade, in the park, or even to get a coffee (decaf please!).

When your neighbor, best friend, or absolute random, well-meaning Brooklynite approaches the stroller you need to explain and prevent anyone coming within five feet. You can blame the pediatrician. It’s okay for them to look for a moment from far away, but they really shouldn’t come close or touch your baby.

As your child gets older, you will likely relax a bit about germs. You will still wash their hands often, but the truth is that kids at the playground will share their puffs, goldfish and their germs. You choose your battles and do the best you can. But with those newborns, it’s always best to be over-protective, and to err on the side of caution.

So, if you are an artist, scholar, student, activist, community agency, journalist, mother and others who work in the area of spirituality and motherhood- apply! If you aren’t a creator, this looks like a good conference to attend as the goal is to make a space where we all can “re-imagine pregnancy, birth and parenting as a spiritual act or awakening and to in-turn empower children as true catalysts of transformation.”

The 1-day conference on April 2, 2012 aims to highlight the transformative and spiritual dimensions of motherhood. Here is more about the conference: “Although spiritual awakening has been described in major life changes (e.g., religious conversion, death, illness, immigration, etc.) there has been a ‘strange neglect’ of spiritual experiencing in the extra-ordinary life transition known as motherhood. Motherhood can be seen as encompassing joy and pain, costs and rewards– an ordeal and an opportunity. Mothers themselves have described “becoming a mother” as a dramatic reorientation in how they come to see the self, others, the world, and even God. Viewed through the lens of spirituality, the daily and even paradoxical experiences of mothering can initiate profound healing and evolution of consciousness in women who answer the call to motherhood.

For 3-8 year-olds:
• 3–5 year olds: free and group play with a craft project each session.
• 6–8 year olds: free and organized group play, as well as an expressive discussion, which informs craft and play projects each session.

For Tweens:
The tweens group, a related but separate offshoot of ATN, offers children, 9-11, the opportunity to come together in a more mature setting with the aim of fostering personal relationships with other adoptees at similar developmental stages in their lives. The aim of the group is to provide a safe, secure, and fun environment that will embrace adoption issues, as they come up, through participation in a variety of age-appropriate activities. The tweens group is facilitated by Kacy Ames-Heron, LCSW, who is, herself, an adult adoptee. The fee is approximately $175 for the semester. Enrollment for the Spring is already closed, but will reopen in the Fall. More information can be obtained by contacting Fran at weinstockf@earthlink.net.

For Teens:
They have volunteer opportunities for teens to assist with playgroups. Community Service credit is available. Please contact Fran at weinstockf@earthlink.net for more information.

For Parents:
ATN runs a parallel parents group, which discusses adoption-related issues. Adult Adoptee Liaison Liz Raleigh, PhD, is a key component of these discussions. A sociologist specializing in adoption-related issues, L

Are you paying your nanny enough? According to the 2011 Park Slope Parents Nanny Survey that came out today, “nannies (in Brooklyn) are earning an average of $14.89- twice the NY minimum wage of $7.25- and are receiving an average of 11 paid days off a year”.

Their findings also noted that despite the higher than minimum wage, “the overwhelming majority of Nannies who work over 40 hours a week are not receiving overtime pay for their work and only 15 percent are paid completely on the books.”

The Park Slope Parents report is based on a survey of over 1,000 Brooklyn Employers of Nannies. (BTW, if you are looking for a nanny, check out our post on “How to Find a Nanny in Brooklyn”.)

Here is a roundup of what they found with their 2011 survey:

In an email today, they reported more of their results.

The Park Slope Parents survey reports other findings that show the Nanny employment situation can be generous:
On top of the 11 days paid time off, more than 8 in 10 also pay their Nannies for the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th of July, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.
4 in 10 employers pay for a Nanny’s Metrocard, which costs the employer over $1500 a year
However, there are also aspects of the Nanny/employer situation where employers fall short :
Only 4 in 10 employers have a written agreement with their Nannies
Since less than one-quarter are paid any of their income on the books, Nannies receive no Social Security benefits from their work situation
1/2 of all Nannies work over 50 hours a week, but only one in four of these Nannies is paid overtime above the 40 hours a week.
Recent legislation such as the Wage Theft Protection Act (WPA) and the Domestic Worker’s Bill of Rights (DWBR) are trying to mediate against unfair labor practices. The WPA requires employers to document, among other things, pay rates and designated pay days. The DWBR requires that employers pay one and a half the hourly wage for work above 40 hours, 3 paid days off after one year of employment as well as other workplace protection.

The report, “The Park Slope Parents Nanny Compensation Survey 2011,” is currently available here.

That’s great news for Clinton Hill and Fort Greene parents who are always looking for more options for indoor play space.

Also new- the studio will have a resident acupuncturist who will be holding office hours starting this week. Sarah Mills, of Moon Rabbit Acupuncture, will be introducing herself to the Bija community through two sessions on Pediatric Acupuncture where you can learn the basics of acupuncture’s effectiveness and some calming breathing techniques.

Lastly, they are offering a class called “Yoga Tools for Parents” which will be an afternoon of “yogic tools and techniques to make bedtime a breeze, transform tantrums into smiles in minutes and kick that chronic runny nose for good.” Really? I definitely could use help for points 1 and 2 above! You will also learn how to “incorporate yoga poses, breathing techniques and games into your daily routine for more moments of connection, joy and peace.”
