There are plenty of days that I wish I had an art project I could do with the kids- and a guiding hand to take me through it. Well, I have found help.  RADkidsART is the brain child of  Rick Anthony Diaz, who has been a teaching artist in New York City since 1995.  Rick [...]

Most of the museums stay open next week to accommodate the numerous kids and parents looking for things to do. On my personal list for next week: The Intrepid Kids Week, the New York Hall of Science’s [...]

Those holiday breaks! What’s a parent to do?! It’s hard not to view these school holidays as anything but a lot of juggling schedules and expenses, but there is an upside: your child can try something new and have a great time!  This year there is almost double the amount of Presidents Week camps from [...]

Would you like to introduce your child your child to opera? The Chocolate Chip Chamber Music Group is doing just that with abbreviated arias from famous operas. If show tunes are more your speed, try a spin on the ice during “Show Tune Day” at Wollman rink in Prospect Park.  Let’s not forget the great [...]

Ice Skating Lessons in NYC, Brooklyn and NJ

    by Karen on 1/19/10 | 2 Comment(s)

Though skating season started earlier this fall, you can still get in on skating lessons.  The benefit to starting skating lessons mid-season is that most of them are pro-rated so you don’t have to invest in a whole semester and some rinks are even having deals.  Most ice rinks have “Learn To Skate” programs that [...]

    Martin Luther King Day Celebrations

    by Karen on 1/14/10 | 1 Comment(s)

I love this drawing I found on the internet. It has all the earnestness of a young student trying to portray a human likeness- especially to someone so important to our nation’s history and to the history of Montgomery, AL (where the artist is from).  She won first prize for her drawing in 2007.  [...]

    by Karen on 1/11/10 | 1 Comment(s)

In New York, we have some of the most exceptionally beautiful outdoor skating rinks. However, if it’s too cold for you or your tots, there are some well-run indoor rinks too.  A few tips: If you head outdoors, try and go in the early afternoons: the sun has warmed the air and the ice isn’t [...]

    Popular playgroup now registering

    by Karen on 12/04/09 | 0 Comment(s)

The newly relocated Co-Op School in Clinton Hill started a playgroup this fall. The moms that go there that I spoke to, really like it. It’s nice to have an alternative to the getting-harder-every-year-to-get-into Lafayette Church Playgroup in Fort Greene.
The Winter/Spring program of the Play Group runs 16 weeks in the mornings (9 am-10:30 am) [...]

I loved the old NYC Explorers play space on Atlantic Street. Yes, at times it seemed chaotic, but the aesthetic there reigned: comfy, bright furniture, clean floors and nice toys. I was really sad when they closed and so ended up going to their quaint Prospect Heights space more- which has the [...]
