We thought we were golden with our 3.5 year old’s sleep pattern: um, yeah, right! We have had lots of middle-of-the-night wakeups from nightmares and now- growing pains. When our son wails from the pain, I get it. I had them too. But, what I don’t get is what they are and how to help him.

According to KidsHealth, growing pains usually happen when kids are between the ages of 3 and 5 or 8 and 12. Doctors don’t believe that growing actually causes pain, but growing pains stop when kids stop growing. By the teen years, most kids don’t get growing pains anymore.

What are the symptoms?
Most of the time they hurt in the front of the thighs (the upper part of your legs), in the calves (the back part of your legs below your knees), or behind the knees. Usually, both legs hurt. Growing pains often start to ache right before bedtime. Sometimes a child can go to bed without any pain, but then might wake up in the middle of the night with their legs hurting. The best news about growing pains is that they go away by morning. MayoClinic reports that some children may also experience abdominal pain or headache during episodes of growing pains. Dr. Greene cautions that if the growing pains occur during the day, or there is limping, redness or any other complaints, you should see your pediatrician.

What causes growing pains?
Kidshealth reports that growing pains don’t hurt around the bones or joints (the flexible parts that connect bones and let them move) — only in the muscles. For this reason, some doctors believe that kids might get growing pains because they’ve tired out their muscles. When you run, climb, or jump a lot during the day, you might have aches and pains in your legs at night. Dr. Greene says the muscles or tendons are still a little too tight for the growing long bones. Muscle spasms lasting from 1 to 15 minutes cause the pain. Many of these children are unable to touch their toes with their fingertips without bending their knees.

How can you help with the pain?
Kidshealth suggests an over-the-counter pain medicine like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Kids should not take aspirin because it can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye syndrome.

There are three other things that might help you feel better:

placing a heating pad on the spot where their legs hurt

stretching their legs or having the child stretch like you do in a gym class

massage their legs

Dr. Greene suggests that during a pain episode, stretching the foot and toes upward will often resolve the muscle spasm. Gentle massage and moist heat over the painful spot can also help. In most cases the pain can be prevented with simple, daily stretching exercises. These exercises must be continued even after the pain subsides in order to keep the muscles and tendons relaxed and able to accommodate the next growth spurt. Some physicians recommend giving a glass of tonic water before bed. Though he has never seen any studies evaluating this suggestion, he does say that plenty of fluids should make cramping less likely.

In fact, I know I’m not: studies show that 82 percent or 9 out of 10 car seats are not installed and used correctly. Even more upsetting? Crashes are the leading cause of death for children from 3 to 14 years old. Suddenly, taking the extra 10 minutes to install a car seat correctly in a livery, taxi or your car seems absolutely worth it.

Baby Bodyguards, a professional baby proofing service based in Brooklyn, is an expert on our blog. This month they wrote to tell me that they are most concerned about improperly installed car seats. They do approximately 5 car seat installations a day and they notice the same errors time and time again. They listed them below so we can check ourselves against them. (I am currently guilty of #3, 5 AND 7. I need to get on this today.)

If you want some visual help in checking your car seat installation, I found these videos very helpful. Do be careful: there are LOTS of youtube videos on “how to install a car seat” that are just plain wrong and dangerous. If you want to be certain you installation is done right you can call Baby Bodyguards to do a car seat installation or call to arrange a free inspection at a DOT Child Car Seat Fitting Station. For Brooklyn it is at the Brooklyn Woodhull Hospital 760 Broadway, phone: (718) 963-6858.

Here are the most common mistakes they see:

1-Using LATCH in a center seating position when it is not allowed by the manufacturer – most vehicles do not permit you to install a car seat in the center, using the two inner LATCH anchors from the side seating positions. Check your vehicle and child restraint manuals. If nothing is specifically mentioned to allow it, don’t do it.

2-Using LATCH and a seat belt together – you must use one system or the other, not both. Either method is safe when used correctly, so go with the method that gets you the best install.

3- Using LATCH beyond the weight limit. LATCH is only good up to 40lbs unless otherwise stated in your vehicle or in the car seat manual. If the vehicle and car seat manuals defer to one another, err on the side of caution and assume a 40 lb limit.

4-Incorrect seat belt routing on a booster – make sure to read and follow the instructions for how to route the seat belt correctly over your child. Many boosters have arm rests that need the lap belt routed under them instead of over.

5- Loose car seat install – a car seat must be installed tightly enough that there is an inch or less of movement in all directions at the belt path when pushed or pulled on.

6-Incorrect belt path used on convertible seat install – you must use the belt path designated for the type of install you are doing. Usually the rear facing belt path runs under the child’s bottom/legs and the forward facing belt path runs behind their back.

7-Chest clip out of position (usually too low) – the chest clip should be at armpit level at all times.

8-Aftermarket accessories (head positioners, body padding/positioners, strap covers, hanging toys, under car seat mats/upholstery protectors, mirrors, suction cup window shades, seat belt tighteners/ratchets, bunting bags/liners, custom car seat covers, etc.) – if it did not come with your seat or is not specifically allowed by your car seat manual, don’t use it. The less “stuff” involved in your car seat install, the better. Nothing extra should go between the car seat and vehicle seat, the baby and the car seat, or the baby and the harness. Toys, mirrors, and window shades can come loose in a crash and injure passengers. Mats can interfere with an install. Many manufacturers will void the seat’s warranty if aftermarket products are used. There are no safety standards for these items, so even those that claim to be “crash tested” or “meet all federal safety standards” (there are none!) cannot be trusted as safe.

9- Not using the top tether anchor when the lower LATCH anchors are used for a forward facing seat – the top tether MUST be used when a seat is installed forward facing with LATCH.

10- Unfortunately the most common mistake we see, not by our clients, but just general observation, are parents riding around with babies/children with no car seat at all. I cringe every time I see this and just pray that child makes it through the early years without being subjected to a crash.

Our sleds are perched at our front door, snowpants washed and laid out…. all in hopes of a fabulous day of sledding! See you out there!

Here are some of the best sledding hills:

NYC:

Pilgrim Hill in Central Park (5th Ave and 72nd Street)

Riverside Park on the Upper West Side (beware of “Suicide Park” at Riverside Dive and 91st Street- it’s meant for adults and older kids). Instead head to Riverside Drive and 103rd Street.

Brooklyn:

Fort Greene/Clinton Hill:

Fort Greene Park
There are about 4 sides to the hill so it never gets too crowded.

The small hill nearest to the Willoughby entrance off Myrtle is small and best for the littlest in your family. The slope ends in a nice snow field where others are building snowmen and trekking to and from the playground. However, there is a lampost to watch out for but it is often surrounded by hay bales to protect sledders.

The steepest area is at the top of the hill by the monument- on the stairs- yes, on the stairs. If there is enough snow, the 3 sets of stairs leading up to the monument from Myrtle Ave are covered. The “run” is to down all 3 sets of stairs. There is a plateau at the end of each one so that if you are able, you can stop yourself from going all the way down to the bottom. Otherwise, be prepared for a hair-raising ride. This is not a hill for the faint of heart- many adults won’t go down it, but kids ages 4 years and up do go down with their parents nonetheless (including ours). I went down the first slope with my 2 year old and stopped at the bottom there so that we didn’t go all the way down. You may snowboarders here too!

There is a hill on the backside of the park that leads to Myrtle Ave which is a nice hill- not as steep and yet still a good one.

The most popular hill is by the tennis courts. It’s a nice wide slope and so multiple sleds can go down at the same time. There are some obstacles to avoid: lampost, tree and recycling area. The park usually covers these with hay bales to prevent injuries.
By Public Transportation: Subways: C to Lafayette, G to Fulton, R,Q, B to DeKalb Avenue, 2, 3,4, 5, D, N to Atlantic Avenue. Buses: B38, B52, B25, B26. Sleds are usually available at the dollar store on Myrtle Ave.

Park Slope:

The Nethermead- Picnic House area
This favored location in Prospect Park has great sledding hills and can get crowded. The best hills are next to the picnic house. For the hills by the picnic house, enter at Prospect Park West and 3rd Streets and head southwest along West Drive.
By Public Transportation: (MTA map) • F Train to 15th St./Prospect Park station • 2 or 3 Train to Grand Army Plaza station • B-68, B-69 or B-75 Buses to Prospect Park West and 9th St.

The Long Meadow Slope- Tennis House Area
This nice hill, next to the tennis house is a popular spot. Head to 9th Street, off of Prospect Park West, then walk towards the interior of the park and cross West Drive to the Long Meadow.
By Public Transportation : (MTA map) • F Train to 7th Ave station or 15th St./Prospect Park station • 2 or 3 Train to Grand Army Plaza station • B-68, B-69 or B-75 Buses to Prospect Park West and 9th St.

Vanderbilt Playground
The sledding hill is across from the playground and right above the lake. It isn’t too steep or crowded. Head to Prospect Park Southwest and Vanderbilt, and head towards Prospect Park Lake. This location is right off of Prospect Park Southwest, so it’s good for little ones as it’s not too far of a hike into the park.
By Public Transportation : F Train to 7th Ave. Station or the 2 or 3 to Grand Army Plaza Station.

Maryland Monument
Enter at Prospect Park Southwest and 16th Street and proceed across to Wellhouse Drive. The slope is by the bridge and is pretty steep. It’s better for school aged kids. There are stairs there to aid in climbing the slope.

Breeze Hill
Plog NYC alerted us to their fabulous steep sledding spot and their sledcam proves it! They say, “for parents on the east side of Prospect Park, there’s a nice steep sledding spot called Breeze Hill. It’s north of the Concert Grove past the Oriental Pavilion. Walk up the hill and point your sleds south towards the Wollman Rink. It’s lightly trafficked and short but fairly steep. Best for kids eight and above.”
By Public transportation: Q or B train to Prospect Park station. Walk down Lincoln Road towards the park. Keep walking in the same direction and you can’t miss it.

Sunset Park:

Sunset Park
This hill is not long, but relatively steep. It’s not overcrowded and if you need a sled, you can buy one at the hardware store across the street. The hill is easily climbable for a 4 year old. You might find some kids snowboarding down the hill even.
Enter at 41st/44th Street and 5th Ave.
By Public Transportation : R to 45th, N/D to 36th, B63 to 42nd.

Bay Ridge:

Owl’s Head Park in Bay Ridge.
Head to Shore Parkway, Shore Road, Colonial Road and 68 Street. MAP

There is a hill at Shore Rd and 97th.
Enter from 97th and go right down the ramp and you will see a big hill. It may be somewhat steep for young kids.

Brooklyn Heights:

The dog park by Harry Chapin Playground is a great spot with a nice slope.
Head to Columbia Heights between Cranberry and Middagh Streets. You can buy a sled at the hardware store on Court/Livingston. MAP

Dumbo:

Clumber Corner is a nice sloping corner as its name suggests. From the photos I have seen of it, this is on my MUST SLED list this winter!
It’s located near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) and at the corner of Washington Street and Prospect St. Dumbonyc.com has a great photo of it. The slope is steep enough that makes it fun and slopes toward Washington Street which has parked cars, so it’s not dangerous. MAP
By Public Transportation : F to York Street, 3 blocks down York, left on Washington St 1 block
A or C to High Street, Cadman Plaza East, go under the Brooklyn Bridge
which is the corner of Washington and Prospect.

Don’t have a sled?

Try these quickie makeshift sleds to make your kids scream with delight:

A metal garbage can lid turned over (the best really)

Find an old tire (you can buy them from tire shops- and there’s one by the G stop at Fulton St. in Fort Greene near the park)

A cookie sheet

Cardboard box (the more creases it has, the more you will slow down, to make it faster, wrap it in a garbage bag)

I saw some kids using recycling bags for great effect!

It’s not fun, but by the end of it, hopefully you will be happy with where your child ends up. Here’s the scoop!

The kindergarten application period is open from January 9, 2012 through March 2, 2012. Visit the Kindergarten Admissions page for more information. Visit the Calendar and Events page to see important dates and deadlines in the kindergarten admissions process. If you are looking for admission info for Pre-K- go here.

Kindergarten Admissions for September 2012
The kindergarten admissions process is school based, but there is a standard timeline for all schools and there are citywide guidelines for eligibility and admissions priorities. Families must submit an application for kindergarten admission, even if they are applying to their zoned school.

How to Apply
During the kindergarten application period (January 9 – March 2, 2012), visit your zoned school and any other school(s) of interest for which you are eligible to fill out an application. Bring your child’s birth certificate or passport, and two documents which provide proof of residence. You can find a list of acceptable documents for proof of residence on our Registration Information page.

How to Find Your Zoned School
You can use the School Search tool to find your zoned school. Click here for instructions. If you have further questions, call 311.

Admissions Priorities
Zoned schools will give priority to students who live in that zone, as they have in the past. Schools will make assignments according to the following priorities, listed from highest to lowest:

Zoned students with a sibling who will be in grades K-5 at the school in 2012-2013;

All other zoned students;

Students residing in the school’s district but outside the school’s zone, with a sibling who will be in grades K-5 at the school in 2012-2013;

Students residing outside of the school’s district with a sibling who will be in grades K-5 at the school in 2012-2013;

All other students residing in the school’s district but outside the school’s zone;

All other students.

it develops memory

improves concentration

develops logical thinking

promotes imagination and creativity

teaches independence

and there are plenty more…but it made me think of chess in a whole new light. Though it is a sit-down activity, it’s anything but passive.

If you are interested in introducing your child to chess or helping them to continue their interest- there are some good (and some new) opportunities in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Lyceum Play
Bring your children in to the Brooklyn Lyceum Mezzanine to play for free! Chess lessons are also available for $25. Most Sundays. 10AM-2PM. Free to play. Charge for lessons.
Details:
Brooklyn Lyceum
Corner of 4th Ave and President Street in Gowanus East (at border of Park Slope).

Greenpoint Chess Club
This brand new club from Town Square is a club where kids aged 6-10 can meet, play chess, and learn to improve their game. The hope is that the kids can go as a group to tournaments and compete across the city, although tournaments are not the main mission of the club – playing chess and having fun are. This is for a child who knows the fundamentals and enjoys the game, is an advanced beginner or is an intermediate level player. They are going to meet Sunday afternoons at 4 PM for 90 minute sessions. They will have a coach and also make a rotating schedule of parental supervision. There will be a $100 fee for the half year (which comes out to about $5 per session!). They have about 8 kids interested and available so far, and we think they will max out with 16 kids based on the space.
Details:
The first and next meeting is Sunday, January 15th. If you’re interested, please contact Debbie at 917.957.1714 or deborahfeiner@gmail.com with your child’s name, age, grade, school attended, and level of play (i.e. beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, etc) and whether they play chess at school or in competitions.

The Brooklyn Strategist Chess and Checkers
This board and card game center, cafe and social club is a pretty unique brick and mortar in Brooklyn. They run afternoon clubs, including one for chess and checkers on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 pm to 5:15 pm.
Giggles, whispers, reading and talking to a performer are encouraged and embraced whenever a family concert gets underway. The concerts, recommended for children ages 5–10, are a wonderful way for parents to introduce their children to live performances of music from around the world. With tickets starting at just $9, it’s a great deal. Tickets are available for the 2012 season that runs from January through May.

Have you got a deconstructivist, constructionist or inventorist sleeping in that twin bed down the hall? That inspired kid just might freak out over the Brooklyn Inventgenuity Festival coming up at the end of January. Your child can participate in “The Dis/Assembly Line,”: an evolving decomposition and aesthetic reprocessing of an entire room of everyday objects and special workshops. Joined by experts like kinetic art mechanic Steve Gerberich and sculptor Nathaniel Lieb, they will dissect, sort and reconfigure artifacts into 2D and 3D sculpture in The Dis/Assembly Line. Perhaps your kid may want to work with an instructor during a variety of 45 minute workshops being offered? They can sign up for sound (Natalie Elizabeth Weiss), puppetry (Jonny Clockworks), food (Kathryn Wallem), electronics (Ed Bear), language in 3D (Eun Jung (EJ) Park), craft (Julie Schneider), video (Allen Riley and Jeff Sisson), and painting (Adam Matta).

This free event has been a huge hit in Brooklyn for the past two years and the room gets very busy with drilling, hammering, yanking and gluing as you can see from the photographs. Workhops fill up as soon as the event gets published, so register as soon as you can.

The weekend of collaboration, art and activity is presented by Beam Camp, a New Hampshire summer camp for the applied arts, technology and collaboration. The activities are led by Beam’s staff of artists, engineers and thinkers. This year’s festival serves as a launch event for Beam’s new Brooklyn-based Inventgenuity Workshop, an after school program for kids 7 – 14 enrolling now for classes starting in March 2012.
