Caribou Baby in Greenpoint can really stock their calendar with solid events and I thought I would give a shout out to some of their upcoming ones.

One of my all-time favorite class teachers, Ellynne Skove of GoGo Babies, will be teaching a Baby Massage Workshop this weekend. I would go just to have her do a little massage on me- but, alas, it’s only for babies!

Ellynne’s GoGo Babies class is so special that she has the most reviews of any class provider on our Marketplace and her classes sold out at Caribou last semester. I see her personally for polarity work- and my mother makes a point of seeing Ellynne when she flies in for a visit. But, since her current workshop is only for babies, I’ll have to schedule my own appointment!

The Baby Massage Workshop, taught by Ellynne, is for babies 6 weeks to pre-rolling & their parents.  This workshop is great for fathers to learn ways to be with baby and engage in meaningful activities as well as new mothers. Grandparents are welcome too!  This workshop will teach you everything from techniques to soothe and calm baby to creating useful sleep rituals using massage.  Tickets will be available in store only for $45/family. Note that these tickets are non-refundable except in case of emergency or baby illness. All refunds will be left to the discretion of Caribou Baby.

One thing I do know after having taking Baby Be Safe‘s infant CPR class, I knew how to administer the Heimlich on my toddler. I will never forget that day when I banged on her back to relieve her of the gooey, glazed strawberry that she was choking on.  I will always be thankful that I took that class 6 years ago.

Baby Be Safe is teaching Infant CPR and First-Aid Training at Caribou Baby this Saturday. This class is intended for Moms, Dads, nannies, or anybody else who watches your baby or cares for your family. You will learn the skills for prevention, recognition, and treatment for choking (Heimlich), respiratory, and cardiac emergencies (CPR) for infants and children. There will also be hands on practice using infant and children mannequins. Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to either learn for the first time or to brush up on your infant CPR and first aid skills.  The class runs for 2.5-4 hours and costs $85-$120 per person depending on whether or not a student is seeking a 2-yr certification in CPR with AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and Pediatric First Aid. Each student will receive a packet and book with the training. Infants can attend with Mom and Dad. Space is limited.

If you’ve never been to Brazil, the new show “Brazil! Brazil!” at The New Victory Theater, is supposed to be the next best thing. With a blend of music, capoeira, acrobatics, live samba and soccer-inspired street dance, the show combines the musical elements of Rio Carnaval with the culture of Brazil.

Brazil’s National Freestyle Football Champion, Arturo, is a featured performer and he will be showing off his sweet soccer moves with a team of singers, dancers and musicians. Between the soccer footwork, gymnast’s flips and dancers’ sizzling steps, the energy of the show will even get your feet moving!

The performance was featured at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as a sell-out performance for two consecutive seasons: which means you might want to get your tickets fast. The group is only in town from February 10 through February 26. I bought tickets a week ago when I first got the press release. I’m excited to see this show that’s been called a “phenomenon….A really vibrant, colorful performance that will appeal to all ages” by The Guardian and “a slick, well-crafted display of movement and music.” by the Los Angeles Times.

Hunter Mountain, who will be at "Snow Day", is offering plenty of deals this winter.

It’s true- tomorrow you really will be able to snowboard in Union Square, despite the predicted 40 degree weather.  New York ski resorts are bringing a winter wonderland to Union Square tomorrow by hauling down truckloads of snow and shooting off snow guns.  “Snow Day”, the brainchild of The Olympic Regional Development Agency (ORDA), Ski Areas of New York (SANY), and “I Love New York”, plan to create a true winter activist’s paradise in downtown Manhattan.

The goal is to entice more New Yorkers to a ski area upstate, where the snow is abundant and the runs are open. Though the warm weather has definitely affected winter sporting in New York, the ski resorts are churning out human-made snow all winter.  You can learn about snowboarding, ziplining, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, downhill and cross country skiing. If you want to see the snow being made and unloaded- make a special trip in tonight (Wednesday) from 9-11 pm.

There are activities for the kids, from snowboarding lessons, to free snowboard tows around ski features and obstacles to trying out some of the coolest new equipment. Professional snowboarder Pat Moore will meet and greet and Red Bull’s Street Team will be giving away prizes like skis, movies, shirts, and more. And, of course, you can learn about the New York’s ski areas and all the activities they provide.

Shine and the Moonbeams- a musicians' favorite!

This weekend you can still catch a couple of Lunar New Year events and enjoy intense dance performances celebrating the debut of the dragon spirit.  One of the highlighted bands of Kindiefest is in town on Saturday: Shine and the Moonbeams. This band puts out a heavy groove that will rock your early Saturday morning. Every Sunday during February you can catch Jumpin’ Juniper at BAX with her interactive hour of story, song, film, or dance. Guest artist this weekend is none other than Suzi Shelton! We thought we were golden with our 3.5 year old’s sleep pattern: um, yeah, right! We have had lots of middle-of-the-night wakeups from nightmares and now- growing pains. When our son wails from the pain, I get it. I had them too.  But, what I don’t get is what they are and how to help him.

According to KidsHealth, growing pains usually happen when kids are between the ages of 3 and 5 or 8 and 12. Doctors don’t believe that growing actually causes pain, but growing pains stop when kids stop growing. By the teen years, most kids don’t get growing pains anymore.

What are the symptoms?
Most of the time they hurt in the front of the thighs (the upper part of your legs), in the calves (the back part of your legs below your knees), or behind the knees. Usually, both legs hurt.  Growing pains often start to ache right before bedtime. Sometimes a child can go to bed without any pain, but then might wake up in the middle of the night with their legs hurting. The best news about growing pains is that they go away by morning. MayoClinic reports that some children may also experience abdominal pain or headache during episodes of growing pains. Dr. Greene cautions that if the growing pains occur during the day, or there is limping, redness or any other complaints, you should see your pediatrician.

What causes growing pains?
Kidshealth reports that growing pains don’t hurt around the bones or joints (the flexible parts that connect bones and let them move) — only in the muscles. For this reason, some doctors believe that kids might get growing pains because they’ve tired out their muscles. When you run, climb, or jump a lot during the day, you might have aches and pains in your legs at night. Dr. Greene says the muscles or tendons are still a little too tight for the growing long bones. Muscle spasms lasting from 1 to 15 minutes cause the pain. Many of these children are unable to touch their toes with their fingertips without bending their knees.

How can you help with the pain?
Kidshealth suggests an over-the-counter pain medicine like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Kids should not take aspirin because it can cause a rare but serious illness called Reye syndrome.

There are three other things that might help you feel better:

1. placing a heating pad on the spot where their legs hurt
2. stretching their legs or having the child stretch like you do in a gym class
3. massage their legs

Dr. Greene suggests that during a pain episode, stretching the foot and toes upward will often resolve the muscle spasm. Gentle massage and moist heat over the painful spot can also help. In most cases the pain can be prevented with simple, daily stretching exercises. These exercises must be continued even after the pain subsides in order to keep the muscles and tendons relaxed and able to accommodate the next growth spurt. Some physicians recommend giving a glass of tonic water before bed. Though he has never seen any studies evaluating this suggestion, he does say that plenty of fluids should make cramping less likely.

Parents in Prospect Lefferts Gardens have been thrilled with the addition of newcomer Play Kids to their area. Since it opened, it’s not only locals that come: parents from Ditmas Park, Prospect Heights, Park Slope and even as far away as Carroll Gardens are making the trip. What’s the draw? Their stellar lineup of unique classes and range of toys, baby items and clothing that meet the needs of Brooklyn families.

The specialty toy and baby shop, which opened on Nov. 1, 2011, is owned by Carl Blake and Shelley Kramer.  The owners, who reside across the street from Prospect Park with two kids of their own, saw a need for a neighborhood kids’ store that would carry products that are BPA, PVC, Phthalate Free and non-toxic but also those that are designed by local Brooklynites. As parents in the neighborhood, they believe in community and that “if we can buy and shop local, we will.” Local Brooklyn products include: Baby DeeDee Sleep Nests (loveliest sleep sacks!), Brooklyn Rocks tee’s, Herbal Postpartum Products made by Divine Daughters, Rooware (plates, bowls, utensils designed by a PLG mom) and felt flower barrettes made by local mom, Allyson Sen.

They have stocked their store only with items that don’t require batteries. Their belief in child engineered toys means they not only carry the classics toys but stock brands like Erector, Chugginton and Thomas, Trains, Playmobil, EeBoo, Djeco, Melissa & Doug, Faber-Castell, Automoblox, Seedling, Kid-O and more.  The store is filled with some of the most sought-after brands and there is ample space for testing them. Want to try a balance bike? Or an Ergo? Feel free to lay your things down and give them a spin.  The family-friendly store is buzzing with kids and parents coming to and from classes, meeting and checking out the shelves.

In true community spirit, Play Kids have opted to keep their classes affordable and so they offer as many “drop in” classes as possible. There isn’t any fee up front and each time that the class is offered, you can come as often as you are able. With a nod to the homeschooling group, they have classes for older kids too.

This is a Dads and Daughters Dance from Oregon

Has your daughter ever dreamed of being the belle of the ball? Her dream can come true this month- and you will be her special date! The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is debuting a Dads and Daughters Ball, a special evening where your daughter will have her very own special night with you. (Moms are welcome too!). Twirl your sweetheart around the dance floor with help from a children’s dance instructor and tunes from a celebrity DJ from WBLS 107.5 FM radio.  Don’t worry, you don’t have to get your own corsage: each belle will receive one at the ball, along with a Valentine’s card and a keepsake photo with her special date.  With a little sugar boost from Dunkin’ Donuts, the dancing will last until the wee hours of the night (7:30 pm).  The “Circle of Love” Dads and Daughters Ball is a way to celebrate what Valentine’s Day really means: sharing a special evening with the most important people in your life.

Ticketing will close at 5 pm on Tuesday, February 7th or when tickets are sold out. Don’t wait to schedule your date! P.S.- dressy attire is encouraged to make it a most festive and memorable evening!

Separate admission ticket required for the dance.
Non-members $25 per couple, $10 for an additional child
Members $18 per couple, $7 for an additional child
