So, if you are one of those people that rarely missed a day of school, this is your golden time!

Free?! What’s the catch? The instructor, Jonathan Kaplan, is developing the curriculum for publication as a book. Occasionally, you will be asked to provide confidential feedback on the course and complete a few surveys as part of your participation, too.

So, how do you get to this path of enlightenment in parenting? You will learn about the 8-Fold Path and explore its application to family life. Each meeting will consist of a lecture, an experiential exercise or
meditation, and review of practice at home during the previous month.

Not so fast! There are a couple of requirements to be enrolled in the class. You need to (1) have an interest in Buddhism; and (2) have maintained contemplative practice for at least two years (e.g.,
yoga, meditation, etc.).

Stockings with Care
Stockings with Care works with coalitions that assist families either living in homeless shelters or who are in jeopardy of becoming homeless and can not afford to celebrate their holiday. Social workers at each of these coalitions work with the parents to make their wish lists. These lists are passed on to Stockings with Care. Through the generosity of our individual Santas, private and corporate donors and a small army of volunteers, we make sure that every child gets at least two things on their list and that each child has at least three gifts to open on Christmas morning. Thousands of gifts are wrapped and delivered to the parents, empowering them to create magic for their kids.is an organization in Manhattan that gives presents to children living in homeless shelters. You and your children can help wrap presents for the children. For more information go here.

This is an excellent service opportunity for kids! 174 Prospect Park West (b/w 12th and 13th Streets) Brooklyn, NY 11215

Food Pantries for Holiday Dinners and Help
I did a post on where to volunteer for Thanksgiving at Brooklyn food pantries. These food pantries also need help during the winter holidays- stocking, sorting, serving, setting tables and putting smiles on visitors’ faces. You can call your nearby food pantry to see how your family can help them. The full list of them is here.

We found some opportunities at Lutheran HealthCare.
A neighborhood institution since 1883, the Lutheran Medical Center expanded in order to provide support services to families, seniors, home care and more in Southwest Brooklyn. They need help year-round too and if you are interested in options to volunteer without family, there are additional programs.

Reach Out and Read – Parents and their kids ages 14 and over can serve as storytime volunteers with the pediatric literacy program based in 5 of their family health centers. Please contact Liz Berger at 718-630-7175 for more information.

Services for Older Adults – Parents and children of all ages would be welcomed to make cards and visit homebound senior citizens. Visits would need to be coordinated with the program due to staff supervision issues. For more information, please contact Sr. Fran Picone at 718-630-8302 for more information. (We did this last year with the whole family. My husband brought his guitar, PA and microphones and he and the kids sang songs for 30 minutes to the senior citizens in their cafeteria. It was, hands down, one of the best experiences we have ever had as a family. It was super easy to coordinate too.)

Warren Street Center for Children and Families – their day care, preschool, and after-school program would welcome volunteers. Please contact Nikki Cosby at 718-237-9578 for more information.

Lutheran Medical Center – The main hospital’s volunteer department would be happy to accept greeting cards or toys for their patients. More extensive volunteering would be limited to kids ages 14 and up. For more information, please call Mary Hetherington at 718-630-7296.

Toy Drive – If you are interested in donating a toy please call Orianne at 718-630-7171.

He feels that that toy is essential for him to have right now. But, what is truly essential to the 51% of Brooklyn kids who are living below the federal poverty level? Cribs, car seats, carriers, clothes and diapers. Many of these children live in single mother households or who have mothers who are teenagers. They do have essential needs.

Little Essentials is a community-based organization that provides free baby and toddler (to age 4) clothing, furniture and other essential items to Brooklyn families living in poverty. Little Essentials helps keep children safe (in cribs, car seats and clothing); lifts the spirits and provides hope to their parents; takes care of our environment by reusing items that are only briefly used.

Since its founding in June 2010, Little Essential has collected donations from 242 families and distributed these essentials to 464 children in need living in Brooklyn with product donations currently totaling $40,388.

The idea that became Little Essentials was born in June 2010 when Sandie Trombert, the founder, noticed multiple listings from other parents in her neighborhood for free baby items. As a mother of a young child, living in Brooklyn, she recognized that low-income mothers often lack basic necessities for their children and concluded that these items would be useful to local Brooklyn organizations who serve mothers living in poverty who do not have access to traditional sources of assistance. The response was tremendous- both the influx of product donations and the need in the community. In fact, it turned out to be much more than a small volunteer effort could support, so in May 2011, Little Essentials became a 501 (c)(3) not for profit.

A recent recipient of goods collected by Little Essentials, a single mother with toddler twins and a newborn, said,

“This really lifted me off my feet. I’m not working and what you did for me really helped me out. I honestly don’t know how to thank you. You made my Christmas good. You put in a little bit of everything. I love it all. It’s awesome.”

Here are some essential needs:
Cribs (no drop side)
Pack & Plays
Diapers (opened ok)
Strollers
Car seats
Carriers/Slings
2T-4T clothes

What is accepted is here:
All gently used donations must be in excellent condition—not stained, torn or dirty. Equipment must have all parts, straps, be in good working condition (instructions are helpful). Toys must include all parts and pieces, and be bundled together. If you plan to donate a car seat please complete this waiver form and submit it with your donation.

Schedule a pick-up
Little Essentials will at no cost to donor pickup if you have large items (e.g cribs, bassinets) and/or (3) or more large kitchen sized bags of clothes, toys or other essentials on designated days from donor homes in Brooklyn New York.

Here they are:

I know, I know. Daylight savings time again. It always comes too soon. Fret not, these simple tips for babies (6 months and older) and toddlers will help you stay on track with your good sleep habits. Give your children a few days to settle in to the new time. After they adjust to the new clock, the only thing left to dread is the sun setting at 4 p.m. Ugh.

1. Put your child(ren) to bed on Saturday night (11/6) at the regular time.

2. Wake up with your child(ren) at the normal wake up time on Sunday morning (11/7).

3. Set your clocks back one hour. This is where you stretch out the time.

4. Put your child(ren) down for the first nap at the regular time per the clock.** This will mean that s/he has been awake a full hour longer during this window and may need some help to stretch out the time. Going outside and getting lots of sunlight and fresh air is a great way to keep kids awake when you’re stretching them.

5. Follow the clock for naps and bedtime from here forward. It can take a few days for your child to fully adjust, so be patient and consistent.

**Younger children may have a harder time stretching a full hour without becoming overtired. In this case it may be better to stretch them 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the afternoon or to stretch them slowly over several days.

That’s great news for Clinton Hill and Fort Greene parents who are always looking for more options for indoor play space.

Also new- the studio will have a resident acupuncturist who will be holding office hours starting this week. Sarah Mills, of Moon Rabbit Acupuncture, will be introducing herself to the Bija community through two sessions on Pediatric Acupuncture where you can learn the basics of acupuncture’s effectiveness and some calming breathing techniques.

Lastly, they are offering a class called “Yoga Tools for Parents” which will be an afternoon of “yogic tools and techniques to make bedtime a breeze, transform tantrums into smiles in minutes and kick that chronic runny nose for good.” Really? I definitely could use help for points 1 and 2 above! You will also learn how to “incorporate yoga poses, breathing techniques and games into your daily routine for more moments of connection, joy and peace.”

Whether you live in Brooklyn or Portland, exposed heating pipes in older homes can give kids some nasty burns. The question is: how to do this effectively and also have it look nice? We opted for a clean-looking, minimal solution at our place: fiberglass shell pipe insulation. My husband and I went to the hardware store, unsure of what to use, but found a paper wrapped insulation that is easy to install. It is called Fiberglass Shell Pipe Insulation and comes in white and in various pipe sizes (1/2″ to 3″) and is shaped in a semi circle. The insulation is slit on one side so you can fit it around your pipe and then secure it on with the sticky side of the paper. The piping isn’t usually tall enough for childproofing needs, so stack two on top of each other.

Fiberglass Shell Pipe insulation

Hide the seam with artists’ tape (easily purchased from an art store). It is the same color as the piping paper, so it looks sweet! (We have had this installed for 4 years and it still looks great.)

Purchase 1" artist tape to hide the seam

Another method was suggested by a reader, Mary from PA. Here is her solution: “So after laying a huge guilt trip on my husband, he bought 1/2″ black foam insulation and 100ft of sisal rope to see which one might work best. I wanted to try the sisal rope first because it would look better and because the babies might chew the foam. We used about 10 yards of sisal rope (not too thin) and it took about 45 min to wrap. Twice during the wrapping, we stopped and held it in place with a thin zip tie so that what we had accomplished didn’t unravel. We removed those later. It took a while to wrap the rope but it looks great. I’ll be curious, though, to see if the cat uses it as a scratching post!” (Mary sent in a photo of her success! It’s at the top)

One of my favorite design blogs, Apartment Therapy, doesn’t like the insulation foam and prefers manila rope and suggests getting 1/4″ manila rope at about 100 feet of it for a 6 foot pipe. A commenter complained that the manila rope that they installed smelled with the heat and suggested using biodegradable sisal instead. Here is how the manila rope wrapping looked:

I think that if you use sisal, you should try and use a thick sisal- it’s less wrapping and it looks better on a tall pipe.

If you are looking for solutions on how to childproof radiators, visit our post here.

Meanwhile, anyone out there like their solution for childproofing their steam pipe and care to give the rest of us your particulars?

Last week, the post that got the most Facebook shares on the blog was on how families could sleep over to support the effort of Occupy Wall Street. What that says to me is that you all are moved by what is going on with the movement, want to educate your kids about it and want to find ways to get involved.

Some of us who wanted to do the sleep over couldn’t- for whatever reasons- so, when an email came through today describing an additional need for parents to help out at Occupy Wall Street- I knew some of you would be interested.

Parents for Occupy Wall Street need help in keeping Liberty Plaza clean and chill in order to maintain the occupancy of it. “If we can keep our houses and kids clean and calm, we can do it at Liberty Plaza.”

This is from the email:
Parents for Occupy Wall Street will not back down from the necessary occupation of Liberty Plaza and will therefore create a volunteer Community Watch Team to step up and address Community Board 1′s requests for a lower noise level and cleaner conditions in and around Liberty Plaza.

Last week 70 families slept in Liberty Plaza in peaceful support of Occupy Wall Street and were watched over by a volunteer security team. Based on the same idea, the Parents for Occupy Wall Street Community Watch Team will wear identifiable lime green shirts and walk through Liberty Plaza four times a day to address noise, sanitation and other issues brought forth by the Community Board 1.

We will work off of a list of requests brought forth by Occupy Wall Street and Community Board 1. Our Community Watch Team will be in full effect in five days.

We call on parents to volunteer their time to keep the occupation alive.

What is Parents for Occupy Wall Street?
Parents for Occupy Wall Street is a collective community of parents in support of Occupy Wall Street.

*I asked how families and kids could help together and she asked that you go to their Facebook Page or send an email to parents@everythingindependent.com- she said there are lots of opportunities.

And, one last thing- my FAVORITE comment this week from a reader who did the sleep over:

We attended and had a great experience. Whatever your political beliefs, I think it’s a vital example of free speech and ordinary people making a statement. My son was impressed, and for the first time ever was able to volunteer directly (not raising money for something, or making something to deliver…but actually handing food out to people directly) which made a huge impression. – Moira

The event will not only be a great teaching moment for kids but a totally community driven peaceful protest with events throughout the weekend.

What a great way for the world to see that parents and children can and should be heard (and not just in restaurants!), but about important matters. We can show everyone that this peaceful movement affects all U.S. citizens and that includes families. This isn’t just a movement for the radical, super young or unemployed- as it has been popularly described- but a movement for families who have had home foreclosures, seen cuts in their school budgets, loss of health insurance- and most definitely, unemployment.

Activities include a sing-a-long with Dan Zanes, a surprise celebrity guest to read a bedtime story to the kids, arts and crafts, a parents coffee date, unity line, and a pizza party. Volunteers are organizing and running the entire event.

If you can’t do the actual sleepover but want to contribute somehow- they need volunteers and items like flashlights, tape and hot chocolate.

There will be a clearly marked Child Safe Area, with a check-in system and security personal. Only registered participants with children will be allowed in the family area. All children will be required to wear ID badges and a head count will be taken hourly.

“Parents for Occupy Wall St is a nonpartisan platform for all parents, families, and related organizations to come together to be heard about issues facing our children’s futures in support of Occupy Wall St.”

We got a Leapster Explorer at Toy Fair about 2 years ago but I was so afraid to actually use it that I just opened the box last month! I had this fear that my son would become addicted to it and I would have to set down all kinds of rules about its use. It turns out that I like it, actually, and I haven’t had to create any rules around it. His favorite game at 5 years old? I SPY Super Challenger (ages 5-9 years) which is a highly addictive game based on the photographic books you know so well. Here is why I don’t mind him playing this game in particular (and, actually like him to): he is learning new words, discerning shapes and objects, matching, memorizing and learning about riddles. His 3 year old sister’s favorite game? Disney Tangled . It’s not as intellectual even though there is some matching and math. It’s fun and narrative but honestly, I get tired of the whole princess thing so it’s not in heavy rotation.

Richard Scarry’s Best Rainy Day Book Ever
This activity book by favorite author Richard Scarry has been on our bookshelf for 2 years- and we use it for sick days and rainy days. It truly is the “Best Rainy Day Book Ever” and gives us focused and short projects to do. Because we are close to Halloween, I thought we would do some of the Halloween activities in the book today. We were out of luck- apparently we did those last year. So, we happily resorted to coloring country flags and making books out of them. With the random color assignments on each flag by my kids, it’s been a bit difficult to gather which flag is which, but nonetheless, it was a great sick day activity with some real learning involved.

Bathtime
Despite major pushback from my 3 year old, I ran a lukewarm bath for her today. I figured that I could kill three birds with one stone: get her clean, eat up some time and bring down her fever. I enticed her by showing her that I had some new bubble bath to try. We have been frustrated that we can’t find an organic bubble bath that foams well, so this weekend I bought Dolphin Organics bubble bath to try. I was assured that it had good “bubbling qualities”. The result was pretty good. There were definitely more bubbles than any of the other organics I have tried and I loved the fresh smell of the Yucca? Calendula? Lavandula? I don’t know, but my daughter’s and I’s consensus was that this was the best priced and best organic bubbling bath soap we have tried so far.

My (and their) favorite DVDs
We watched (ahem) two movies today. Yes, I was lazy and tired and bored- and so were they- so we broke out some videos. After all, we had only killed half the day with the aforementioned activities plus meals by 2 pm! The videos I feel the least guilty for letting them watch (and actually love) is Wee See. This DVD series is the coolest kids’ DVD: it’s part art installation and part educational DVD. It is the quintessential “sick day” movie: it’s visually stimulating but also calming. It’s like having a mind massage. With black and white shapes oscillating and morphing onscreen, your mind sees shapes in innovative ways. My 5 year old likes it just as much as my 3 year old and me (the art grad that I am).

For some good laughs, we watched the Charlie and Lola DVDs. This British brother and sister duo are hilarious, quirky and adoring of each other. If you don’t know this video series, get on it! We splurged and bought Charlie and Lola, Vol. 1-8 last year- and, it was totally worth it. It’s pretty hard to find a funny cartoon for both kids and adults. (Well, Phineas and Ferb is a close second).

I should also mention that I make a trip to the grocery store for sick day essentials (Gatorade, pretzels, Chestal and ice cream) if no one is that sick. Today, we ventured out to Costco and picked up a movie for next weekend. Guess what is was? Phineas and Ferb The Movie. I’m expecting some great laughs on family movie night- and hoping for no more sick days.
