Since it opened, it’s not only locals that come: parents from Ditmas Park, Prospect Heights, Park Slope and even as far away as Carroll Gardens are making the trip. What’s the draw? Their stellar lineup of unique classes and range of toys, baby items and clothing that meet the needs of Brooklyn families.

The specialty toy and baby shop, which opened on Nov. 1, 2011, is owned by Carl Blake and Shelley Kramer. The owners, who reside across the street from Prospect Park with two kids of their own, saw a need for a neighborhood kids’ store that would carry products that are BPA, PVC, Phthalate Free and non-toxic but also those that are designed by local Brooklynites. As parents in the neighborhood, they believe in community and that “if we can buy and shop local, we will.” Local Brooklyn products include: Baby DeeDee Sleep Nests (loveliest sleep sacks!), Brooklyn Rocks tee’s, Herbal Postpartum Products made by Divine Daughters, Rooware (plates, bowls, utensils designed by a PLG mom) and felt flower barrettes made by local mom, Allyson Sen.

They have stocked their store only with items that don’t require batteries. Their belief in child engineered toys means they not only carry the classics toys but stock brands like Erector, Chugginton and Thomas, Trains, Playmobil, EeBoo, Djeco, Melissa & Doug, Faber-Castell, Automoblox, Seedling, Kid-O and more. The store is filled with some of the most sought-after brands and there is ample space for testing them. Want to try a balance bike? Or an Ergo? Feel free to lay your things down and give them a spin. The family-friendly store is buzzing with kids and parents coming to and from classes, meeting and checking out the shelves.

In true community spirit, Play Kids have opted to keep their classes affordable and so they offer as many “drop in” classes as possible. There isn’t any fee up front and each time that the class is offered, you can come as often as you are able. With a nod to the homeschooling group, they have classes for older kids too.

They are offering some special workshops this month too:

Saturday, Feb. 4 at 5pm they are offering an “Introducing Your Child to Solid Foods” Workshop. Maya Feller MS RD will lead the workshop which will include information on how to make your own baby food, readiness of the child to eat solid food, baby food making demonstrations, and a Question and Answer segment. The workshop will run about 90min and cost $20/person or $35/adult.

For Valentine’s Day, stop in for a photo shoot and craft-making at “Make Your Own Valentines” event. The photo session is $20/print (five additional prints will be email to you to print or send at your leisure). Make your own Valentine’s will be free.

Gliding on freshly zambonied ice, sipping hot chocolate at break time, spinning perfectly on point- well, now I am just dreaming. But what isn’t a dream is to find inexpensive ice skates in Brooklyn. Good Footing in Park Slope has new and used skates. (Used are mainly just available for children- as the store owner pointed out, “Adults don’t grow out of their skates.” Well, I did! Having kids doesn’t just make your tummy get bigger!)

For children: (new and used. $15 for used, new $29.95-$80)
For women: new ($50- $90)
For men: new ($100 for hockey and $140 for figure)
Sharpening is $8 per pair.
If you buy a new pair, they will sharpen them for free. (New skates have to be sharpened, as they don’t ship sharpened skates- it’s a liability- OW!)

**Bring in old skates for discount on new skates at 20% or swap old skates for old skates. (Your old skates have to be in usable, sellable shape though).

Details:
Good Footing
196 7th Ave (at 2nd Street)
718-369-2601
Their store hours are Monday-Friday 11am-7:30pm, Saturday 10am-7pm and Sunday 11am-6:30pm.
All Major Credit Cards.
webteam@goodfooting.com.

UPDATE: I went in for women’s figure skates: they have 3 brands. They have 2 very padded brands that you essentially can’t jump or spin in and then the traditional figure skate that you can do all those jumps and twirls. The price for the padded skates is $80 and the traditional ones are $85. They do run wider than the ubiquitous Ridell figure skate, so there is a difference if you are used to the very old figure skates. Paragon is SOLD OUT of the Ridell’s in sizes 6.5 through 9. Bummer for me who has very narrow feet! I ended up buying new skates for myself at Wonderland Sports at Chelsea Piers. Great service. They also have a location near Dyker Heights as commenter Tracy mentioned below. (Thanks Tracy!)

A lot of it is passed on to crew members (I am the proud owner of red velvet curtains and some funky lamps), but a significant portion of these items end up as waste in our landfills. Film Biz Recycling is one of the coolest not-for-profit organizations that we know (and have written about before). Film Biz Recycling redistributes about 60% of waste from movie and TV sets to local charities and organizations as well as sells some products through their Film Biz Prop Shop. To raise money for Film Biz Recycling and the amazing local organizations and charities they assist, they are holding a real-deal live auction called Lights, Camera, Auction in Brooklyn. You can scoop up esoteric and wonderful rescued props and materials. Bet you would love to replace your food-gummied rug for a paltry sum!

The event has been constructed by Krrb, (a cool online site to sell and trade secondhand, handmade and locally-made), will begin bidding at $10 bucks! There will also be curated collections from Swiss Miss; Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan of Apartment Therapy; Brooklyn artist and children’s books illustrator, Oliver Jeffers; and Andrew Wagner of Krrb, formerly of Ready Made and Dwell.

Just two short hours away from Booklyn by car lies the lovely town of Phoenicia, located in the Catskills. It’s a quaint village about 20 minutes from Woodstock. Eclectic and full of artistic types, it’s pretty laid back and is very escapist, and certainly makes for a perfect weekend trip.

On our recent trip there, we started with lunch at Sweet Sue’s on 49 Main Street (tel: 845-688-7852). Bottomless hot coffee, good service and the best pumpkin pancakes and challah french toast (with pecans, bananas or coconut) we’ve ever had. It’s seriously worth driving out of the way….well out of the way. The pancakes are huge and tremendously filling. Actually, all of the portions are big enough for more than one person and completely shareable. It’s also very family-friendly, with crayons and coloring books in abundance. Do be prepared to wait a while on the weekends, so bring a newspaper, but it’s so worth the wait.

Then we took the kids on a ride on the Catskill Mountain Railroad. The Catskill Mountain Railroad Scenic Train is a 12 mile round trip between Phoenicia and Cold Brook station (Boiceville) — an hour and thirty minute railroad excursion. We boarded in Phoenicia (adults: $14; children over the age of 4: $8). At the station, there is a small railway museum for kids to explore. The train goes up the Esopus Creek and offers views of the area’s mountains and woods. We all really enjoyed it. It’s a beautiful ride, and we felt like we had gone back in time, riding through the country side in an old caboose. The conductors are dressed in traditional uniforms. The train was also decked out in fall decorations, adding to the autumn spirit. Next week, when the foliage is in full bloom, it will probably be fantastic. It’s a real ride for train buffs of all ages, my son being one of them. He has also had a train fetish his whole life and this certainly fulfilled his dream to go on an old-fashioned train ride.

Phoenicia is home to a lot of funky boutiques set up by the hipsters and artists who live there. Many out-of-towners come to Phoenicia to go tubing down Esopus Creek, and the Hunter and Belleayre ski resorts are an easy trip from here through the High Peaks area. Both ski resorts are open in the fall to ride the ski lift and hike on the hills. You might also consider hiking up to the Temper Mountain Fire Tower for a beautiful 360 degree view. It’s a great day out of the city for anyone who needs time out at any time of year.

Located in Ulster County, Phoenicia is located in the northeast part of Town of Snandaken on Route 28. From Brooklyn, take the Brooklyn Bridge to the FDR Drive North to the George Washington Bridge. Take exit #62 to the Garden State Parkway. Continue to the I-87 North to exit 19 (Kingston Route 28). Turn right on Route 28 West toward Ellenville (US-209)/Rhinecliff Bridge. Continue on Route 28 to Bridge Street, then left on Main Street (Route 214).

*** Catskill Mountain Railroad has fall foliage trips that started last weekend. Might be a great way to combine your kids’ interest in trains, and yours in the trees!

We can now increase that number of locations to 7 with the grand opening of a new kids’ consignment shop in Greenpoint this weekend.

The new shop is called Lulu’s Closet, not to be confused with LuLu’s Then & Now in Park Slope.

The owner, Lisa, named the store “Lulu’s Closet” after her daughter Lulu’s closet, which had become overburdened with outgrown clothes. Lisa “decided to open the store when (she) saw (her) 14 month old daughter’s clothes that she had grown out of” were not only piling up in her home, but that some of the clothes might be desirable to other parents. She also knew she was not alone. She knew a lot of parents wanted to find a way to make use of their kids’ clothes and save some money buying new ones.

Interested in selling clothes?
They only take and sell clothes that are clean and in great condition, no stains or holes.

What you can buy at the store:
Besides a selection of clothes for newborn to 4t (which will expand in the future) they have a range of shoes, some brand new. A novel idea: a fun sock bin full of trumpet socks amongst other brands 4 for $1 (kids loose socks on a daily basis) and used tights 2 for $1.

Need some fortification after a visit to the store? They are across from the delicious Peter Pan Bakery (make sure to get a donut).

Lulu’s Closet
718a Manhattan Av close to Norman Av
They are open 7 days a week 10 – 7 closed major holidays.
Grand opening is this Saturday.

Brooklyn Industries had already moved its corporate headquarters to DUMBO, but wanted to expand to include a retail location. The store is set to open in a 2,165 square feet location in early March at 70 Front Street and has been leased for five years .

There are already stores in Park Slope, Cobble Hill and Williamsburg but the DUMBO shop will be different. “We will treat this store as an art installation,” added Lexy Funk, Founder and Chief Executive of Brooklyn Industries. “We will feature art by artists within the company and we will redesign fixtures and overall design of the space every six months.”

After opening its flagship location on Brooklyn’s Bedford Avenue in 2001, Brooklyn Industries now operates 14 stores in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Portland, Ore. The brand specializes in men’s & women’s apparel, limited edition graphic t-shirts, accessories and bags.

We have a great resale/consignment scene in Brooklyn with 4 resale shops for Brooklyn kids, 2 of which also sell maternity. Although I am never sure I will find exactly what I need, I seem to have great success going to each one for my specific needs. LuLu’s Then & Now has a robust collection of older children’s clothes including pants, jackets and shoes in great condition for my 5 year old. Livie and Boo has high-quality button-downs, rugby shirts and pants for my son (though not as large a selection for older boys as LuLu’s) and unique outfits for my 2 year old that rival what you would find in a boutique. I visit Still Hip for books and rinky dink toys that they love. It’s an inexpensive trip to the “toy store.” I haven’t been to Monk’s Trunk yet and Madison Rose Maternity will begin offering kids’ resale shortly, so I plan on making trips to both next month. Anyone have reviews of either of them so far?

In addition to the brick and mortar resale shops in Brooklyn, there are pop-up consignment/resale shops and online opportunities that afford parents more opportunities to sell and buy gently used kids’ clothes.

Babies, Kids and Maternity Resale Event
Two local moms are hosting a sale and want you to sell your clothes with them! If you don’t have much to sell, but need to buy, they will have clothes from newborn to 7Y, maternity clothes and shoes. If you sell, you get 50% of the price of your gently used clothes. If the clothes/shoes do not sell, you pick them up or they donate them to a charity.
Details: Thursday, February 17, from 10:00 to 6:00pm Friday, February 18, from 10:00 to 6:00pm Saturday, February 19, from 10:00 to 5:00pm at The Brooklyn Commons, 388 Atlantic Avenue (between Hoyt and Bond st). Email audeny04@yahoo.com to arrange a time for the drop off of your clothes and shoes. *Bring clothes and shoes in a closed bag with your name, email adress and cellphone on it.

Be Green Kids Consignments
Be Green Kids Consignments, a seasonal kids consignment event that Brooklyn parents like a lot, will be holding their third sale in Dumbo from March 17-20, 2011. Families can participate by purchasing items at up to 90% off retail prices or you and buy and sell. Being a consignor means a lot of work- but as a couple of people pointed out last year, it seems worth it. Families have to prepare, tag and drop-off their items but Be Green Kids Consignments does the marketing and selling for you- and that can be worth the 35-40% cut they take. Be Green Kids Consignments is anticipating over 300 shoppers throughout the weekend.
Details: March 17-20, 2011 at the Dumbo Spot located at 160 Water Street, (Dumbo) Brooklyn from. Families can register to consign at www.BeGreenSale.com

ThreadUP
This site, started by a mom, lets you swap children’s clothing and toys online with an interesting concept. Browse through other parents’ boxes of clothes, select one and pay just $5 plus shipping. Then send in a box of your own child’s clothes for another member to choose- and ship it off at no charge. When you sign up you receive 10 shipping boxes right away. My only concern, as a Brooklynite stuck with a decrepit post office, is the ease of shipping from the P.O. (not!). Members and boxes are both rated to keep good users at the top and bad users out of the game.

Peace.Love.Swap
Peace.Love.Swap, started by a mom, produces large scale kid’s clothing and gear swap events, but their main focus in 2011 is helping moms across the US start their own successful swap. Their mission also includes a way to help your community by giving leftovers to charity. They are looking for moms and dads so they can help you start swaps of your own. Sounds like the right kind of mission for a company called “Peace. Love. Swap.”

This is the seventh installment of our new feature called “Top of the Shop”. It’s a biweekly look at a shop in Brooklyn and its 2 top selling items and then our favorite 2 top items. I hope that you see some new shops to visit or old shops that you might have forgotten about. Amazing photographer, Justine Cooper, has agreed to take on the feature, even though she is mainly known for her family portrait work (See her “Spotted” work for us). I think you will appreciate getting to see Brooklyn stores through her elegant photography. Let us know what you think.

From Justine about the shoot and shop:

The Green Onion, an independent children’s boutique, is one of my standby destinations when I’m looking for a special gift, plus I often pick up a great item or two from their sales rack. If I’m feeling flush, I’ll splurge on something interesting for one of my kids (they have great boy clothes which is hard to find!) I also love their focus on seasonal collections, so I’ll know what I’m buying is what’s hot now. Their selection spans infant through tween clothing from both classic brands like Petite Bateau and Tea, to more one-off and local pieces from both known (Egg) and up and coming labels (Kid Cuteture). Elliesha Villanueva has owned TGO since 2008, but it’s been around since 1998, growing with the neighborhood. I liked how helpful and knowledgeable she was about all the lines she carries.

Jasper models one of The Green Onion’s top sellers – Melton’s full face fleece lined hat ($27). Apparently Jasper already owns one and his mom declared it the only hat he’ll wear. Plus it’s got a scarf built in. Cozy.

Top Seller- rompers Photo by ©Justine Cooper

TGO’s top selling items for babies are these Imps & Elfs rompers which highlight that cute baby shape and get snapped up for Layettes.

While technically not the best sellers in the spirit of the holidays, I thought these Dale Kaplan cupcake and cowboy pillows were pretty irresistible. She is a local artisan who has been making vintage inspired pieces since 1993 ($45)

My top pick: Egg sweaters with pockets Photo by ©Justine Cooper

For toddlers and young children, these sweaters by Egg are Top of the Shop. Dumbo designer Susan Lazar knows what kids and parents will like. My own son always needs to bring a toy with him in order to leave the house, so the brown boy style with pockets rocks.

Yes, and another top pick of mine: Old Soles shoes Photo by ©Justine Cooper

And for the holiday footwear I’m definitely going with these Old Soles metallic shoes for my, about to walk, bub. I loved the grips and the bottom.

I have been known to blow my whole monthly budget at book fairs- which is why I am particularly concerned that 3 good ones are all coming up around holiday time. I’ll have to hold myself back….

The International School of Brooklyn’s French and Spanish Children’s Book Fair (Friday, Dec. 3rd and Saturday, Dec. 4th)
This wonderful book fair is frequented by parents and teachers alike perusing the edited collection of French and Spanish magazines, books, games, music and more. There will also be children’s activities, bake sale and face painting.
Details: Friday from 2-7 pm and Saturday from 11am- 3 pm. ISB is at 477 Court Street in Carroll Gardens. For more information, visit their site.

Grace Church School Holiday Book and Toy Fair (Friday, Dec. 3rd and Saturday, Dec. 4th)
This book fair is a little bit different as you can buy both books and toys: it’s a one stop shop. On Saturday they will have free snacks and entertainment for the children while you get to shop. 10:30 am are book readings and signings, 11:30 am is a children’s sing along.
Details: Grace Church School at 254 Hicks Streeet at Joralemon. Friday from 9 am- 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am – 2 pm http://gracechurchschool.org

The Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (Saturday, December 11)
This is one of the best school book fairs I have been to. The finely culled group of books touches on a lot of different interests: math, science, early reader and picture books. I went twice in fact- I couldn’t bear to miss out on some of their selections. Each book has a title card with some info- it’s a bit like having a seasoned librarian at your side, recommending each book personally. There are crafts (bookmark making, book bag decorating, book covers), a bake sale and….they also have some rock-star childrens’ authors there to sign and read from their books including: New York Times best seller E. Lockhart (The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks; The Treasure Map of Boys); Tad Hills of the beloved pictures books How Rocket Learned to Read and Duck and Goose; illustrator Brian Floca who will take kids to the moon and back with Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11,(this is one of my son’s favorites) and Laurence Klavan and Susan Kim, creators of the mysterious Brain Camp. Additionally, Michael Bitz of the Comic Book Project will conduct a workshop on making comic books for kids ages 9 – 13 (space is limited to the first 25 kids). The fair, a free, public event, runs from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Author reading schedule:
10:30 a.m. Tad Hills
11:15 a.m. Brian Floca
12:00 p.m. Comic Book Workshop with Michael Bitz
1:00 p.m. E. Lockhart
2:00p.m. Laurence Klavan and Susan Kim
Authors will sign their books immediately following their reading.
