Allison and I had a wonderful chat on our stroll through Brooklyn Heights.  It turns out, we have the same alma mater – GO BLUE!!  Allison shared with me the story of how she and her mom would have special days off, just the two of them, to relax and explore.  She had started the same tradition with her daughter Avery, and I was lucky enough to spend part of it with them for our shoot.

Alexa and Sylvie were enchanting!  We had an early morning shoot at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and it was as if the stars aligned – the weather was perfect, Sylvie was all smiles, and the former ballerina Alexa managed to make chasing and carting a baby look graceful!  The light was magnificent, and we had a very inspired shoot.

Ages of Kids: Almost 1 – her birthday is on October 5!

2 Favorites Places in Brooklyn to hang out with your kids: Cobble Hill Park with a blanket, picnic and friends on a sunny day (though it was more relaxing before Sylvie started crawling and now walking), and Music for Aardvarks class at Gumbo.

Special interests / hobbies / passions (of yours): Art – I run a gallery, and I’m just starting my own consulting business to share my passion for art with friends who might be intimidated by the “hoity-toity art world”.  I also love to travel and can’t wait to get Sylvie her first stamps in her passport!  And our whole family is passionate about good food!  Sylvie’s current interest is waving and smiling at everyone she sees.

Anything you would like to say to your kids? Thank you for being such a happy, friendly baby, it makes my “job” taking care of you easy and fun.  And I am constantly amazed by the person you are becoming, and I can’t wait to explore the world with you!

When Caroline contacted us about featuring her daughter and granddaughter in Veeps, I invited her to come along, as well!  I just love photos incorporating multiple generations.  They exude such a unique sense of the passing of time.  Caroline and Stephanie had the best energy!  It was no wonder they got such awesome smiles out of baby Mickyla.

Neige and I had a great time discussing the woes of New York City living – sirens aren’t a sleeping baby’s best friend, nor a sleeping photographer’s for that matter.  Sometimes it’s nice to just be able to vent!  Her husband’s family is from Cleveland, so we also shared a love of things going on in that city – and I got to tell her about my love project: the blog Cleveland Hipster, about fun and quirky things to do.

Sara had three of the most adorable accessories I’ve ever seen – her 4-year-old son, and 3-year-old twin girls charmed me right away.  Not only are they gorgeous, they’re excellent conversationalists!  They all met me in Carroll Gardens for a street shoot on a very hot morning – luckily we got some action shots in before it got too hot.

Meredith, Eva, and I had a wonderful morning adventure in Brooklyn that started in a nearby park, and led up to the roof deck of their building.  I loved hearing Meredith’s travel stories, and was so inspired to hear how much she had already traveled with the little one!  Also, Eva is just about the most easy-going baby I’ve ever met – her smiling ways get me right here (in the heart).

Ages of Kids: 1 year in 2 weeks! (Sept 18 is her birthday)
2 Favorites Places in Brooklyn to hang out with your kids: Carroll Gardens library and Artscetera’s “Open Play”. A close second would be Cobble Hill park.
Special interests / hobbies / passions (of yours): I’m a writer, so I enjoy live readings in the neighborhood (BookCourt is wonderful for that; plus they have a reading series for children) and when all the stars align, I’ll spend a few hours at a cafe on my own work. I frequently stay up way too late with a book, knowing full well I need to get up at the crack of dawn with Eva.  And along with Eva’s father and uncle, I run a budget travel site (www.EuroCheapo.com), so travel is a huge passion in our household. This fall, we will be taking Eva overseas for the first time.  I know she likely won’t remember it, but I’m so excited that she’s now officially part of the crazy ride.
Anything you would like to say to your kids? Yes, two things. 1) I would do anything for you. Seriously. Anything. 2) You are allowed to be and do whatever makes you happiest. Always.

A moment of rest on the boulders at Pier 6's Water Village

From Sarah about the shoot: Fatima contacted us about being featured in Veeps, and right away we were struck by her friendly, warm energy.  I asked her to meet me at Pier 6 for our shoot, where I promptly realized I wished I were a kid again so I could play in that water!

Names: Fatima (Mom) and Aponi (daughter)

Neighborhood: East Flatbush (but its all Flatbush to me)

Age of Kids: 2 years old

2 Favorite Places in Brooklyn to hang with kid: Underill Park on the corner of Propect Pl (Toddler friendly playground, lots of trees, cool parents) and Target at Nostrand and Flatbush (at 9am on a Sunday, she can run if she wants to, we can preview toys and books, get pizza and mommy can get a caramal frapp)

Special interest: I have and always be passionate about dance. I study Afro-Cuban dance with Richard Gonzalez at Peridance. I go at least once every two weeks, its mommy time (thanks hubby!). I also love house music and so does Aponi. Outdoor events with house music are very family friendly..everyone is doing their own thing on the dance floor, positive lyrics, uplifting melodies. (Think: Soul Summit in Ft. Green and the Clubhouse Jamboree that takes place in late September in Prospect Park.)

Anything you would like to say to your kid: Two things: 1. You come from a great and mighty people. 2. You were born out of love.
