by Karen on 9/02/10 | 0 Comment(s)
We reported back in June about Lulu’s in Brooklyn opening a new consignment shop in Park Slope called Lulu’s Then & Now. Well, the good news it finally opened on Tuesday of this week. Owner Brigitte wrote me this morning to say the opening “was a huge hit.” Might be a great chance to stock [...]

by Karen on 8/20/10 | 0 Comment(s)
It seems like if you blink these days, a store closes and another one opens in its place. A new shop called “livie and boo” has replaced Corduroy Kid at its Prospect Heights location. The ribbon cutting ceremony for its inauguration was this Tuesday- and store namesakes “livie and boo” were there. (see top photo)
The [...]
Bunk beds- should you or shouldn’t you?
by Jill on 8/11/10 | 1 Comment(s)
As my daughter approached 3 (still in a crib!) and my tall son seemed to be growing in the shape of a C in his toddler bed, I had to come up with a new sleeping solution. We don’t have a bedroom big enough for them to have two twin beds. We needed a compact solution. [...]

For crafty you- a list of my favorite craft stores
by Karen on 8/09/10 | 1 Comment(s)
I so badly want to be crafty, like making my children’s pjs or wildly fun snow globes…but I just….don’t. I have totes of craft supplies: stencils, pom poms, pipe cleaners, glue gun- I have it all. Just not the motivation. But, that definitely doesn’t stop me from buying the supplies. And, if you are like [...]
Looking for a cheap way to furnish your place? Brooklyn mom has the solution
by Jill on 7/26/10 | 0 Comment(s)
Conceived by a Brooklyn mom in 2007, Film Biz Recycling (FBR) was started as a means to combat the waste prevalent in the NY film industry. The Long Island City–based not-for-profit redirects props, dressing and building materials left over at the end of many local movie, tv show or commercial shoots. Instead of ending up [...]
Fresh Direct gets competition: Peapod!
by Karen on 7/19/10 | 1 Comment(s)
I grew up in Chicago, so I know all about Peapod, the online grocer. Though we never used them, (mom loved the grocery store trips), I’ve always been curious why they didn’t come to the northeast. Years later, we got Fresh Direct in NYC. And, although I have been happy with them (especially for bulk [...]
Corduroy Kid Closing Sale
by Karen on 7/13/10 | 0 Comment(s)
I was particularly sad to hear the news today that the tightly edited kids’ clothing stores, Corduroy Kid, is closing down both of its stores. They are currently located in Prospect Heights and Park Slope.
Right now, you can get great deals at both locations: everything is 50-70% off through Sunday from 11-6. This will be [...]

On the heels of Lulu’s Cuts and Toys announcement this week that they are opening a new children’s resale (and some new) shop, another one announces it too is opening! That’s great news for families. There can never be enough resale shops- especially since Brooklyn is rumored to have had the most babies born in [...]

We were getting ready to fly to Wisconsin for a family wedding with my daughter as a flower girl so she needed to look extra cute. I had made an appointment for myself at the Lisa Lobue salon on Fifth Avenue and 13th street where I’ve been going for cuts and color since my daughter [...]

It seems that Lulu’s owner Brigitte is on a roll. Last October she opened her second store Lulu’s For Baby after the success of her original toy and hair salon Lulu’s Cuts and Toys. And, now she is opening a third store: Lulu’s Then & Now.
Lulu’s Cuts and Toys has been popular for its [...]

Your sunscreen B-team
by Jill on 6/22/10 | 2 Comment(s)
Shut up about the sunscreen, I’m sure you’re thinking. But lest it seem like I’m beating a dead horse, read on. Yes, we all know to use it and probably know how, even. Hopefully we all dutifully have found our favorite brand and ordered cases of it to prepare for summer. (Of course, we also [...]
Best sunscreens & moisturizers for your kids & you
by Jill on 6/13/10 | 3 Comment(s)
You can spend a small fortune on sunscreens (or gym memberships!), but none of it matters unless you use it. In a study conducted last year of 1,000 adults, Consumer Reports found that the 250 surveyed adults with children under the age of 12 “were no more likely than adults without young children to use [...]
CSA spots available- and some jobs!
by Karen on 6/01/10 | 1 Comment(s)
When I first moved to Brooklyn, I was initiated into a whole new world of food coops, Greenmarkets and CSAs. Though the Park Slope Food Coop intimidated the heck out of me (and still does) and the Greenmarkets have become a common stop for us, I haven’t ventured out into the land of CSAs. I [...]

Pop Up Shop by moms for moms TODAY
by Karen on 5/19/10 | 0 Comment(s)
I love three vendors being featured at this pop-up shop for moms by moms, which means that I am assuming the other vendors will be just as enticing. My favorite organic animals, Aminals, will be on sale and so will Skin Lingerie’s silky items and Two’s breezy kaftans (great for maternity wear). Other vendors include: [...]

Valentine, [...]
Pumping: when, how and why
by Karen on 5/12/10 | 0 Comment(s)
I remember when my sister first pulled out her backpack-style breastpump, strapped on her bustier and the pump cups and turned the machine on- all while she was giving me some sisterly advice. To her, it was like nothing was going on…to me, it was like: Woah! what are all those tubes and how is [...]
Need a gift guide for Mother’s Day?
by Karen on 5/05/10 | 5 Comment(s)
Mother’s Day is coming which my husband had totally overlooked (until I reminded him last night). It’s not surprising since my birthday also passed without any recognition last year. You know what I want for a present? (I’m pretty simple): PLANTS. Yes, really. So, tonight we went and picked out some plants for me to [...]
Sand: what you need to know
by Jill on 5/04/10 | 0 Comment(s)
My kids happily play in the sand – beach or sandbox – for hours at a time. Now that Jenn has outgrown the sand-eating phase and is almost out of the sand-throwing phase, it’s fun for all of us. I have always rolled my eyes at my friend who won’t let her daughters play in [...]

Cobble Hill/Downtown Brooklyn is getting a new high-end retail resident. Barneys Co-Op announced this week that they will be moving in at 194 Atlantic Ave, near Urban Outfitters and just a skip-hop from Trader Joe’s. If you don’t know what Barney’s Co-Op is, it’s a little less expensive than the regular Barney’s. And, I mean [...]
