Why else would a seasoned Manhattan bookstore open a location in Cobble Hill? Idlewild Books will open this Monday, February 1st, though passers-by will note that the shops’ doors have been open for the past week or so. You might wonder how Cobble Hill can support another great bookstore when Book Court and The Community Bookstore do a pretty stellar job. Idlewild Books has a unique niche: they specialize in novels and kids’ books and language classes in French, Spanish and Italian.

Idlewild opened the first store in 2008 in Chelsea on 19th street between 5th and 6th avenue. That location is primarily travel books and world literature. For the past year or so, books in foreign languages were added. A lot of their clients came from Brooklyn and, the owner, David del Vecchio, thought it would be a great idea to open a store here where they would focus on French, Spanish and Italian (even though you will still find English language books about Europe and bilingual books for both kids and adults).

Idlewild Books in Chelsea

When I asked Idlewild about who has been popping into their store so far, they mentioned that they have had everything “from native speakers of all three languages looking for a good read, to Tintin fans looking to add another title to their collection, to parents looking for bilingual Spanish/English books for their children.”And, for that large French expat community we have in Brooklyn? The Idlewild staff said, “it is early to say who our main clientele will be but francophones and francophiles will probably take the lead.”

As of now the bookshop hasn’t planned any story times but they are considering doing it in the future. They do offer 10-week classes for children ages 7-9 and 10-12 in French and Spanish. They are an introduction to these languages that focus on oral communication and comprehension. The children learn through songs, play, and arts and crafts. They will add more languages, levels and age groups in their spring term starting in April. Their Facebook page has a lot of up-to-date information, including the books they are unpacking each day.

Arguing with your partner over how to parent, money woes and in-laws is pretty standard stuff. But…. it’s exhausting. Who wants to argue over who did the laundry last time or why no one can stand the MIL? Wouldn’t we all rather waltz through these parenting tangles and spend the energy on having time for ourselves?

Tomorrow night, Michael Stiglitz, a New York State Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, will provide a free workshop on “Making Parenting Decisions Not War.” Most of us aren’t at the level of all-out war, but we could probably use some suggestions on how to problem solve those sticky areas. And, you won’t be doing it alone: the parenting forum is intended to help you improve communication and to get you on the same page- all in a mediated and nonjudgmental environment. A night of free therapy might be a great start to hacking away at those high tension areas and help you understand each others parenting decisions better.

The chic maternity store, Bump Brooklyn, organizes after-hours events in their shop on occasion. Besides being free of cost, their events always seem to be free of any agenda too. In true community spirit, the owners of Bump invite respected businesses to come to their store and give a seminar or do a meet and greet.

This week they have invited Village Obstetrics for an evening’s discussion on the most important questions to ask your doctor or midwife – whether you have already selected your practitioner or are considering other options. The doctors will be present to answer your questions during a follow-up Q&A session and to mingle with you afterwards. If you are curious as to how this practice stacks up to the others out there, check out the review on our Marketplace about them. (And, before you do- just know the Marketplace has some current glitches, but I am working on fixing them!)

Please RSVP to reserve a spot. They will have refreshments and all attendees will receive a 10% discount on purchases that evening.

Background on Village Obstetrics from their website:

Prior to co-founding Village Obstetrics, Dr. George Mussalli was the Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the beloved St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village. He has also served as Chief of Obstetrics at North Central Bronx Hospital/Jacobi Medical Center. His work in the Bronx at both Montefiore Medical Center and in the public hospital system where he served as Director of Obstetrics brought experience in the most challenging maternal and fetal disorders. Dr. Mussalli is a graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and a father of four.

Dr. Jaqueline Worth is a board certified Ob/Gyn who focuses exclusively on pregnancy and birth. She is an expert in the art of natural birth, VBACs, and her hands have been the first welcoming touch to thousands of newborns. A graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, Dr Worth has also taught at New York Medical College. She has taught many medical students and residents and happily collaborates with doulas and midwives. She co-founded Village Obstetrics with Dr. Mussalli and is a mother of 2 daughters.

Here we are at Ft. Greene Park

Snow! The forecast from weather.com is: “Through 3pm: Intermittent snow, sleet and/or freezing rain will change to a few snow showers around noon. About one inch of additional snow through 2:30pm.” All to say, that means we may have great snow for sledding!

Our sleds are perched at our front door, snowpants washed and laid out…. all in hopes of a fabulous day of sledding! See you out there!

Here are some of the best sledding hills:

NYC:

Pilgrim Hill in Central Park (5th Ave and 72nd Street)

Riverside Park on the Upper West Side (beware of “Suicide Park” at Riverside Dive and 91st Street- it’s meant for adults and older kids). Instead head to Riverside Drive and 103rd Street.

Brooklyn:

Fort Greene/Clinton Hill:

Fort Greene Park
There are about 4 sides to the hill so it never gets too crowded.

The small hill nearest to the Willoughby entrance off Myrtle is small and best for the littlest in your family. The slope ends in a nice snow field where others are building snowmen and trekking to and from the playground. However, there is a lampost to watch out for but it is often surrounded by hay bales to protect sledders.

The steepest area is at the top of the hill by the monument- on the stairs- yes, on the stairs. If there is enough snow, the 3 sets of stairs leading up to the monument from Myrtle Ave are covered. The “run” is to down all 3 sets of stairs. There is a plateau at the end of each one so that if you are able, you can stop yourself from going all the way down to the bottom. Otherwise, be prepared for a hair-raising ride. This is not a hill for the faint of heart- many adults won’t go down it, but kids ages 4 years and up do go down with their parents nonetheless (including ours). I went down the first slope with my 2 year old and stopped at the bottom there so that we didn’t go all the way down. You may snowboarders here too!

There is a hill on the backside of the park that leads to Myrtle Ave which is a nice hill- not as steep and yet still a good one.

The most popular hill is by the tennis courts. It’s a nice wide slope and so multiple sleds can go down at the same time. There are some obstacles to avoid: lampost, tree and recycling area. The park usually covers these with hay bales to prevent injuries.
By Public Transportation: Subways: C to Lafayette, G to Fulton, R,Q, B to DeKalb Avenue, 2, 3,4, 5, D, N to Atlantic Avenue. Buses: B38, B52, B25, B26. Sleds are usually available at the dollar store on Myrtle Ave.

Park Slope:

The Nethermead- Picnic House area
This favored location in Prospect Park has great sledding hills and can get crowded. The best hills are next to the picnic house. For the hills by the picnic house, enter at Prospect Park West and 3rd Streets and head southwest along West Drive.
By Public Transportation: (MTA map) • F Train to 15th St./Prospect Park station • 2 or 3 Train to Grand Army Plaza station • B-68, B-69 or B-75 Buses to Prospect Park West and 9th St.

The Long Meadow Slope- Tennis House Area
This nice hill, next to the tennis house is a popular spot. Head to 9th Street, off of Prospect Park West, then walk towards the interior of the park and cross West Drive to the Long Meadow.
By Public Transportation : (MTA map) • F Train to 7th Ave station or 15th St./Prospect Park station • 2 or 3 Train to Grand Army Plaza station • B-68, B-69 or B-75 Buses to Prospect Park West and 9th St.

Vanderbilt Playground
The sledding hill is across from the playground and right above the lake. It isn’t too steep or crowded. Head to Prospect Park Southwest and Vanderbilt, and head towards Prospect Park Lake. This location is right off of Prospect Park Southwest, so it’s good for little ones as it’s not too far of a hike into the park.
By Public Transportation : F Train to 7th Ave. Station or the 2 or 3 to Grand Army Plaza Station.

Maryland Monument
Enter at Prospect Park Southwest and 16th Street and proceed across to Wellhouse Drive. The slope is by the bridge and is pretty steep. It’s better for school aged kids. There are stairs there to aid in climbing the slope.

Breeze Hill
Plog NYC alerted us to their fabulous steep sledding spot and their sledcam proves it! They say, “for parents on the east side of Prospect Park, there’s a nice steep sledding spot called Breeze Hill. It’s north of the Concert Grove past the Oriental Pavilion. Walk up the hill and point your sleds south towards the Wollman Rink. It’s lightly trafficked and short but fairly steep. Best for kids eight and above.”
By Public transportation: Q or B train to Prospect Park station. Walk down Lincoln Road towards the park. Keep walking in the same direction and you can’t miss it.

Sunset Park:

Sunset Park
This hill is not long, but relatively steep. It’s not overcrowded and if you need a sled, you can buy one at the hardware store across the street. The hill is easily climbable for a 4 year old. You might find some kids snowboarding down the hill even.
Enter at 41st/44th Street and 5th Ave.
By Public Transportation : R to 45th, N/D to 36th, B63 to 42nd.

Bay Ridge:

Owl’s Head Park in Bay Ridge.
Head to Shore Parkway, Shore Road, Colonial Road and 68 Street. MAP

There is a hill at Shore Rd and 97th.
Enter from 97th and go right down the ramp and you will see a big hill. It may be somewhat steep for young kids.

Brooklyn Heights:

The dog park by Harry Chapin Playground is a great spot with a nice slope.
Head to Columbia Heights between Cranberry and Middagh Streets. You can buy a sled at the hardware store on Court/Livingston. MAP

Dumbo:

Clumber Corner is a nice sloping corner as its name suggests. From the photos I have seen of it, this is on my MUST SLED list this winter!
It’s located near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) and at the corner of Washington Street and Prospect St. Dumbonyc.com has a great photo of it. The slope is steep enough that makes it fun and slopes toward Washington Street which has parked cars, so it’s not dangerous. MAP
By Public Transportation : F to York Street, 3 blocks down York, left on Washington St 1 block
A or C to High Street, Cadman Plaza East, go under the Brooklyn Bridge
which is the corner of Washington and Prospect.

Don’t have a sled?

Try these quickie makeshift sleds to make your kids scream with delight:

A metal garbage can lid turned over (the best really)

Find an old tire (you can buy them from tire shops- and there’s one by the G stop at Fulton St. in Fort Greene near the park)

A cookie sheet

Cardboard box (the more creases it has, the more you will slow down, to make it faster, wrap it in a garbage bag)

I saw some kids using recycling bags for great effect!

In my other life or increasingly, my former life, I was a photographer. So, I get asked a lot about how to store digital photos. Since so many of us are taking digital photos of our children, I thought this might prove of interest to you.

Here is what I do:

I make 2 backups of everything. EGADS! (I know, I know). But, I do. In fact, if I were really smart I would have 3 backups (which is what I am going to recommend to you).

I have a dedicated hard drive for my photos. Hard drives go bad though so you can’t depend upon this as your only storage. Case in point, I lost one of my photo hard drives a few months ago. Thankfully, Mac Concierge recovered all my data for a very fair price.

Secondly, I copy all the images to archival gold DVDs. The Archival Gold are supposed to be able to store your images for more than 100 years. Don’t forget a Safe Pen for writing on the DVDs. Regular pens or markers can destroy a DVD or CD due to their solvents and alcohols.

What I should do- but don’t….is have an online backup system like iPhoto, Migratr or any of the reasonably priced online storage systems.

Happy Shooting!

If you aren’t a list maker, maybe the new year is the time for you to try one- and I have some cool ones I have found.

Just to prove how absurd my list-making has become, I have fine-tuned my own over the years. I designed it with 3 headings. “CALL/EMAIL, DO and GO.” If I have 10 minutes to make calls, I look at my “CALL/EMAIL” list and just plow through them. When I need to run errands, I fold my list up, slide it into my purse and knock off the “GO” items. When something has been done, I X out the box, when I’ve started it I / through it. The picture above is my list, and here is a downloadable version. It is in PDF format, so you can print it on any printer.

Mommytracked has some pretty fantastic “To Do” lists. They have downloadable organizers from “Eat Sheets” to “Family Organizers”- all free. I love their “Balance Sheet’, with “Work To Dos” and “Home To Dos”.

Let me know if you find one that works for you.

The Doodle Deal reminded me that I wanted to write about them and how much they helped me. As specialists in organizing children’s rooms and play areas, Genius Organizing know how to whip those particular spaces into shape, but, I found they were also great in doing just about everything!

Nicole and Julia, the founders of Genius Organizing, are totally fun, easy to be with and nonjudgmental (an essential characteristic for this business!). I worked with Julia the entire time due to scheduling though I have met Nicole many times since she lives one street from us. I actually looked forward to Julia’s visits: she was interesting to talk to while we sorted, had clear ideas, she worked her butt off (never took a lunch break and instead drank some sort of monster power shake!), dug in and got dirty and took charge. I was happy to defer to her about decisions- it was a relief to give up role of chief decision maker for a few days.

Here were my projects:

Project 1: The Basement
Clear out our entire basement which meant 16 years of tax filings, old rugs and furniture, camera equipment and moldy books. This part of the project involved stepping on cockroaches (we both wore hiking boots!), loads of dust, and hauling boxes of books out into the light.

Result:
Julia lugged 12 boxes of old tax filings up from the basement, checked them and then called a shredding company. She met the truck with me and we dumped the papers into the high-tech truck while we watched a video monitor for verification that all the documents were shredded. We boxed valuable art books and I took them to book shops in Brooklyn where I ended up with some serious cash for them. We emptied bins and tubs, deciding which items needed to be discarded, donated or kept. We found cassettes, reams of brochures and my old journals and sorted, sorted, sorted. After days of dust, bugs and dirt, we had a clean and organized basement! To make sure our family kept up with the new system, we labeled areas of the basement so that our family could easily shelf items.

The shredding truck! Julia and the driver inspect the monitor to make sure it all goes down!

Project 2: The Closets
Go through all our closets and donate or sell clothing, equipment and shoes.

Result:
First we went through my clothing. We sorted the maternity clothing, out of style clothing, can’t-fit-in-it-anymore clothing and put them into piles. My vintage designer duds were taken off by Julia to be photographed for ebay and sold. Additionally, Julia bagged some clothing to take with her for a stoop sale she was doing with friends. She actually sat out on the stoop instead of me and sold my clothes and shoes. On another day, Julia and I pulled the children’s outgrown clothes out from under beds and shelves and organized them in groupings by size and style and then tagged them. I held a sale in our apartment and what didn’t sell, Julia bagged and donated. The sale went well and visitors loved that the clothes were bundled. Julia explained that the bundling eliminated leftover one or two pieces. I thought it was brilliant. For the leftovers, Julia arranged for a pick up by St. Marys and put the bags out on the stoop.

Yes, it's a mess.

Here is how Genius Organizing bundled and tagged all the clothing for sale.

What a nice clear way to get clothes organized for donation pick up!

Project 3: The Camera Equipment
In my former life I was a serious photographer (though not particularly good) and have loads of equipment from that time period as well great gear from my grandfathers and mother who were also in the biz.

Result:
Julia and I went through the equipment with her assistant. Her assistant photographed each piece and then loaded them up to ebay. Julia sent me a check for over $900 for my stuff and I never had to touch it! Lovely!

List of items they sold for me at stoop sale and on ebay. This is ORGANIZED!

Julia was dying to help me go paperless and I would have let her but I was getting addicted to this organizing and I think my husband was beginning to think that Julia was living with us. I think I will go digital next time with her. I loved doing payments online with her and then getting paypal payments and electronic receipts from her as she sold my items on ebay.

So, here’s to a great Doodle Deal! Now is the time to bite the bullet and get started as the deal ends after this weekend. While you’re at- I would suggest buying one as a gift for a good friend. It’s the perfect “welcome baby”, “I love you!” and “you need help!” present. (They work in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Riverdale, and Westchester County).
