Williamsburg gets a new playground

1st Graders from PS 17 at the ribbon-cutting ceremony

The children in Williamsburg got a new playground last Thursday when a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opened the new East River State Park play area.  The East River Park, which opened in 2007, has always had great views of Manhattan, but never any kind of play area.  The playground, funded primarily through Nestle Juicy Juice, has new trees and incorporates the historic features of the 19th century shipping dock that previously inhabited the site. There’s a wooden train that lines up with historic railroad tracks embedded in the concrete, a swinging scale, and springy discs.

It is a state park and they have different rules than city parks:  no alcohol, no bikes, no animals. They do have free summer concerts where you can buy alcohol and the parties are supposed to be a blast.
