Food allergies? Our list of bakeries is mmmmm good!

If you have food allergies or have a child who does, it seems like a daunting task to find a special treat or even a birthday cake. Luckily we live in NY, which means you have options and delicious ones at that! This is my list of my favorite bakeries to get gluten-free and vegan baked goods. I’m sure I missed a few as well as some private bakers who should be on here. If you know what I am missing, please add them.

BabyCakes

248 Broome St (btw. Ludlow and Orchard)
New York, NY 10002
212-677-5047
This bakery specializes in sugar free, gluten free, wheat free and vegan goods. Most goods are sweetened with agave nectar (often a safe alternative for diabetics). Delivery to NYC. Great things from cupcakes, to cookie sandwiches, to, of course! birthday cakes. You can get a shipping quote from them too.

My recommendation, if you get a cake from there, is to ask them to be sure to make it the day of, and DO NOT refrigerate it in advance of serving it. It was pretty dense and dry after we refrigerated the one we got for my diabetic dad’s birthday last year. Their frosting is pretty darn good, though — rich and creamy without being cloyingly sweet. New York Mag named their cupcakes the best in the city last year. Anyway, enjoy!

Whole Foods

With a whole foods in Tribeca, Union Square, Flatiron, LES and more, you can find one that’s convenient to you.
We bought some of my favorite vegan cupcakes ever for my daughter’s birthday here. They were delicious and not a soul could tell they were vegan! They have gluten free cakes, cupcakes, brownies and more, not to mention boxed products that are gluten-free or vegan that you can make on your own.

The frosting on the cupcakes is to die for! The white frosting in particular tastes like pure buttermilk cream- the cake itself was fluffy and moist. I’d do it again- even though I’m not a vegan- but have a kid who’s allergic to dairy.
