Fests this weekend: the biggest and the small

My head is spinning with all the festivals this weekend, and when you see the fabulous list of fests we have, yours will be too! I have my list of where I am going- and it seems my husband has his and the kids have their own. Luckily, some of them overlap! We are all heading to the Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms on Saturday with PBS Kids 13 for some square dancing, hay rides and a visit with PBS character Arthur. On Sunday, I will head to Atlantic Antic with a huge helium tank to blow up balloons for the kids, (I’ll be in front of Gumbo on Atlantic btw. Hoyt and 3rd Aves)- and the rest of the family is heading to the World Maker Faire at the NY Hall of Science. Later, they’ll head on to the DUMBO Arts Festival. I think they are leaving me at Atlantic Antic on my own (wah wah)- so please come by and say “hi”. What’s on your weekend plan?

WORLD MAKER FAIRE
This is one event I REALLY wish I didn’t have to miss. While I am blowing up balloons at Atlantic Antic, my husband is taking our children to the first World Maker Faire in NYC. World Maker Faire is a festival of creativity- think a geeky “Burning Man.” You can check out a life-size mousetrap, see the Coke Zero and Mentos fountains in person, make a radio-controlled airplane- and see the best of the rest of science, technology, design, crafts and performance.   World Maker Faire will be held on Saturday, September 25 from 10 am – 7 pm, and on Sunday, September 26 from 10 am – 6 pm.

DUMBO ARTS FESTIVAL
One of my favorite festivals of the year, The DUMBO Arts Festival, an arts extravaganza featuring more than 500 local and international artists, is running this weekend and will include lots of family activities. The Festival takes over the entire DUMBO waterfront community — its street corners, parks, bridges, galleries, storefronts, performance venues, and studios and is a total blast. In addition to family activities, the DUMBO Arts Festival features visual art, monumental art installations, performance art, (these are often memorable- like the floating tea party one year),  open studios (my personal favorite part of the whole fest) and more. For the first time, art revelers will also enjoy scores of street musicians and live concerts, instrument workshops, drum circles, parades and dance companies, as well as walking tours and readings by notable authors. Go here for the schedule and more information. For just family friendly programming go here.

Down the avenue, the Moxie Spot and Gumbo (I’ll be at Gumbo!) will also have programming for the whole family including Pirate School with Billy Bones, Liam the Magician, Rolli Polie Guacamole, and Graciela’s Musica Para Mi, where the youngest audience can learn the Spanish language through song and dance.
