Reader Review: Imagine Swimming

I love, love, love Imagine Swimming. I believe that learning to swim is essential.  What other sport could potentially save your life?  I’m also a qualified swimming teacher so I have high standards.  We tried the classes at YMCA.  They might be good when you can swim independently, and although they are extremely well priced, their regimented style can be hard for young children who have become accustomed to swimming with their parents.

Having considered all of the options we decided to give Imagine Swimming a try.  I wasn’t excited to spend so much money, but quickly realized that the $40 per child per lesson was absolutely worth it.  There have never been more than 4 students in each class we’ve attended, the teachers are in the water with their students the entire time, lessons are organized to perfection, and they have the perfect balance of fun and authority.  Sometimes my 4 year old is hesitant to get in the pool at first but he is always expertedly coaxed into the water and always leaves his lesson elated with his progress.  I have been astounded with his progress over the past 6 months.  He has gone from holding on tightly to the edge to confidently swimming on his own.

My 2 year old daughter swims with me and adores her class and teacher, and has become wonderful confident and and at ease in the water.  Unlike many classes for toddlers the class goes beyond singing and bouncing in the water and introduces important fundamentals.

We attend their classes at Long Island University.  The pool is beautiful but a little chilly so getting a wetsuit for children isn’t a bad idea.  They are also strict about using their changing rooms so be prepared to get ready in small tents beside the pool.

We had done make-up classes at the flagship pool in Tribeca which is a dream.  A nice warm temperature and just an impeccable facility.

One of the biggest perks taking Imagine classes is that they have community swim for families on the weekends at their Tribeca pool.  At $20 per family, it’s a great way for children to practice their new found skills with their parents, plus there is a delicious little bakery downstairs with great croissants.
