You definitely don’t have to be a kid to appreciate the idea of discovering “the secrets of museums, historic neighborhoods and beyond” with a scavenger hunt. If you are an adventurer at heart, you can scour the museums looking for clues either with or without your children- all with the guidance of Watson’s Adventures. If you do decide to bring your family, it’s suggested that the children be ages 7 years and up (though they say you can bring a younger one too if you want).
How it works:
Team up with a small group to tackle silly, yet tricky, questions about the museum. Like: At the Museum of Natural History, what animal does an acrobatic stunt that “stinks”? Answer: A cacomistle or civet cat. (See why you need a big kid now?) Hunts for adults are about 2 hours and family ones are 90 minutes. Add another 30 to 40 minutes for distributing materials at the start and scoring and announcing the results at the end.
What we did:
This past Saturday, the weekend before Valentines, my dear friend Nicole and her Hubby ( who live upstate) came to spend the weekend with us, without their two girls. We planned an adult weekend involving activities, cocktails and dinner. We decided to do Watson Adventures ” The Murder at the American Museum of Natural History,” I knew Nicole and John would love it.
At the museum, we were given an introduction and a mystery to solve that involved Egyptian relics, hieroglyphs and the Curse of Ahtchu. Questions in hand with two and half hours to solve the murder, our team flew through the museum frantically, following the locations given to us and solving the clues one by one. They ranged from easy (can be solved in less than five minutes), to pretty darn hard (up to 10-15 minutes). We had twenty questions to answer to get the clues needed to solve the murder. It was the most fun ever even though it got hectic as we raced through the museum, crossing other teams’ paths and then making it to the final meeting place.
Hints:
Don’t expect to study the art too closely. Do expect funny stares from other museum-goers.
