Sprichst du Deutsch? Karneval this weekend

If you could read that headline- and yes, actually pronounce it- then do we have an event for you!

CityKinder.com, a new web-site for the German speaking parent community in NYC, is throwing a Kinderfasching (Karneval)!

It’s a dress-up party with everything from music, dance and games to delicious German delicacies.  But you don’t have to break out your dirndl, lederhosen or tracht to come, you can dress your little ones (and yourselves too) in their favorite costume: be it superhero, princess, animal or a smashup from their closet.  There will be prizes at a costume parade, so get a jump start on your designs tonight!

Though you don’t have to speak German to attend, the event will be attended mainly by German speakers.  If you just like to rub your shoulders with this fun group, you might pick up a few words and learn about some of the country’s food specialaties.

Here is what they have going on:

  • Live entertainment by Katie Mullins (Brooklyn)
  • Music, Dance, Games & Fun
  • Enjoy Wiener, Leberkaes, Brezen & Krapfen by Schaller & Weber and Old German Bakery
  • Costume Parade
  • Raffle
  • Tumbling area for infants and toddlers
  • Costume prizes
  • Arts & Crafts Corner sponsored by Wortspiele Brooklyn

P.S. – for those of you that are interested (and I was and had to look this up)- here is what Fasching is!   Fasching is Germany’s carnival season. It starts on the 11th day of November at exactly 11minutes after 11am and ends at the stroke of midnight on Shroud Tuesday – often referred to as Fat Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday). Fasching is more or less a Roman Catholic and Christian Orthodox celebration and most Protestant and non-Christian areas do not celebrate it.  Fasching (also known as Karneval) is a time of festivity and merry making – a time to break the rules, poke fun at those who make them and then to make your own new rules.
